I neglected to mention that my F stops doing landscapes mainly range from F8 to F11, hence I don’t need fast lenses. I know that Sony GM lens is a 2.8, but wow it is incredibly versatile and super sharp 👍📸

Have you heard of Reikan Focal? It's software for testing lenses. The aperture sharpness test graphs sharpness at all available apertures. The Nikon Z 14-24 F2.8 and Z 105 F2.8 Micro both have super sharpness and very flat graph from wide open till around F11 then it starts to drop off. Other lenses I've tested have a significant drop in sharpness approaching wide open. It's fascinating.

This mirrors my setup, and am happy to see other photographers using it. I have a 24-70 2.8 and a 100-400 4.5 and I find they cover pretty much every focal length I could want while keeping weight / hassle down.

Have had similar thoughts for a little while now Adrian. With my Z7ii I've decided on three lenses, the 14-30, 24-120 and 100-400 (also have the 1.4 T/C) and that has me covered for, I believe, all scenarios. All up the camera bag weighs in at a tick over 7 kilos and I'm comfortable with that.

Fully agree on the choice of zoom lenses these days Adrian. I think it used to be very true that there was a massive gap in sharpness between primes and zooms but these days there are some cracking zoom lenses around that you would be hard pushed to tell the difference between that and a prime. Cheers mate👍

Till recently when I changed from Nikon F mount to Z, I just used the 28-300. Often doing two or three shot panoramas for wider views. Now I find the Z 14-24 used most often. I also have the Z 24-70. The thing about shooting at 14mm and F8 is the great depth of field. I'm always learning. Just a hobbyist. Ah one lesson recently learned was to have much greater overlaps in panoramas. One last thing. As I love to do birds and other wildlife also but hate changing lenses, I just purchased a Z5 to dedicate to landscapes and My Z9 carries the 100-400 + either TC for wildlife.

Great video, Adrian! I lusted after the Canon 14-35 f/4 for a long time but in the end, when Canon put the EF 17-40 f/4 L on sale for only 499 I decided to go with that for my ultra-wide, I already owned a proper EF to RF adapter. I find that the ultra-wide is my least used lens but you have to have one because some shots just require it. I like the 17-40 range but 14-35 would probably be even better. I think one of my biggest mistakes when I bought my Nikon F glass was picking the 14-24 2.8 instead of the 16-35 f/4. The 14-24 is too heavy and bulbous. I'm still waiting for an ultra-wide Z DX lens which is finally on the roadmap. Then I'll have a massive range in an ultra-light three lens package with the Z50 as my landscape camera. I love how you have figured out that you rarely need 36-79mm for your landscape work. I'm not sure if I can say the same but I wouldn't be surprised if, after some research, I could find out that I don't use those focal lengths much either. LOL

Thanks for watching Phil. I think that Canon 14-35mm would be pretty amazing if I had it for an R5. Seen a lot of good reviews on it. I do love my 14-24mm F2.8G, but mainly use now for astro and video in my studio, but that's about it. Filters for it cost a fortune compared to the 16-35mm which is lighter. Hope you have a great weekend mate, take care 📸🙏

I agree - I always hear that a 24-70 is the “go-to” lens for landscape, but I use (on APS-C) a 10-24 & 55-200 (FF equiv 15-36 and 80-300) and find these great. If photographing in the bush a.k.a woodland photography, then this is the only time I might want something in the “normal” range

Nikon 20mm f1.8 on my D800 and Nikon 17-55 f2.8 DX on my D7200 Sometimes I use the Nikon 70-300 f??? On my D7200 because of the (x 1.5) reach. I've a 24-120 f4 which I never use and a Sigma 10-20 mm which I used to use on the D7200 before I bought the 20mm for my D800 and is now redundant also. I bought into the Lumix mf3 for travel before the pandemic and I now believe Mirrorless is the way to go. Size, Weight and ease of use. I will possibly sell off the DSLRs at some stage but full frame Mirrorless are far too expensive for what I do

I use Sony and take a Zeiss 16-35 F4, Sigma 24-70 and the 100-400. I analyzed my footage and use all of them. But the 24-70 most for travel pictures with people. If I would only shoot landscapes it wouldn't be as necessary.

Great video Adrian and some amazing footage from your past adventures around the world! I'm guilty of a very heavy backpack on my landscape photography trips. I usually take my 16-35, 24-70, and 70-300, but like you, rarely use the mid-range 24-70 when I'm traveling. Totally agree with the Tamron and Sigma alternative lens choices. Great lenses at a fantastic price. Great stuff as always mate. Hope you are doing well, have a great weekend!

I use a similar lens range with the Canon R5. 24-105mm RF and 100-500mm RF. I also have the 17-40mm EF via the adaptor which is surprisingly sharp. I always have the 24-105mm with me and take either the 17-40mm or the 100-500mm depending on where I'm going.

As a complete newbie photographer, would I regret purchasing the RF15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM as a more affordable option over the RF14-35mm F4 L IS USM? Can someone explain the main difference with these two lenses?
@ThePinoyAggie
@ThePinoyAggie 2 года назад
I used to have the Nikon Z 14-30 mm f/4 S lens and the Z 24-200 mm f/4-6.3 lens. I loved the compactness and weight combo with my Z6 II/Z7 II. The set-up covered focal lengths from 14 mm to 200 mm. I brought the combo with me on my hikes. However, the corner sharpness of these lenses is not great. I sold the 14-30 mm and gave the 24-200 mm to my bro-in-law for his Z5. I bought a used Z 14-24 mm f/2.8 S and still waiting for the 24-120 mm f/4 S lens. The 14-24 mm is awesome (except for the price)!

Hi Andrian, interesting that you don't use a midrange lens. My 24-70GM is probably my most used lens. But you know: 5 photographers, 5 different behaviors :) I agree, that the Sony GM lenses are amazing. Not only that they are incredibly sharp, but the feasible aperture range is also outstanding. And this is really an advantage, as it makes things much easier out on location. Just the price is a big downside, as you have mentioned. However, a fantastic video Adrian. I really like that you have considered different camera brands, although you are a Nikon user. I guess it has been great fun to try out all the flagship cameras last year. Have a great weekend, Christian

Great video, Andrian! I have a crop sensor camera so I use a 10-18 mm lens which is the equivalent to around a 16-35. My second lens is an 18-200. @@dogsbyfireI’m about to pick up a used Nikon Z6 with 50mm f1.8. I’m just wondering what a good lens is to complement it with for travel. Everyone recommends the 24-120 but I’m not really a zoom lens person and dislike heavy lenses. I also need the versatility to be able to switch quickly to portraits as my holidays are usually with friends or family. Glad to see someone with a prime lens set up.

Good recommendations. I’m pretty much a two lens man myself these days although I have a cheeky third lens. I have the Sony A7IV and use the sony 14mm f/1.8 GM for my nightscape work, the sony 16-35mm f/2.8 for most of my landscape work, and the tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 for anything else. I’ve had super telephoto zoom lenses before but I find them all too heavy for my tolerance, plus I like to take photos of family/pet dogs when I’m out and about, so the versatility of the 35-150mm is ideal. But I wholeheartedly agree that for landscape photography you just need a wide zoom and a longer zoom. In the last I thought a 24-70 would do it all, but I actually found it frustrating because it doesn’t cover the wide stuff or the long stuff - just the bit in between that’s less useful.

Thanks for watching. If you notice in the video the wide angle lenses I suggested take screw in filters eg. 77mm, the same for the telephotos in most cases. I use Lee filters. After going through many different lenses in EF and RF versions, I chose the 14-35 F4L IS USM to shoot everything. It's a lightweight lens weighing only 540 grams, great image stabilisation for shooting at night and a very comfortable range of focal lengths for shooting all around and landscapes. I am delighted with the quality of the images I get with this lens, great colours and image sharpness as good as my old prime RF 24 F1.8 for example, and definitely better versatility and image quality.

I own the Nikon 80-400mm lf/4.5-5.6 ED VR ens you highlighted in this video, but I've never applied it to landscape photography. I mainly use my Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 and the Nikon 24-120mm f/4. Both render very sharply focused images.

Good advice. In my experience as a photographer I found the 16-35mm interesting but not very useful. I made the choice of a 24-70mm (impressive) and a 70-300mm (not so impressive). The 70-300mm is a really nice lens, but it is not tropicalized and the length when extended is often too long to safely contain filters with filter holder. A 70-200 not extendable with the tripod handle would have been a smarter choice (now is in my wish list)

TS-E 24 on Lumix S1R High res gives me 187 megapixels. 60mm macro on E-M1x. Hifh res gives me 50 megapixels hand held, 80 on a tripod. Both have internal focus stacking (doesn't work with manual lenses, of course) pre-burst.

Hi Adrian, nice tips! Just a question - for the kind of wide-angle landscape shots you take, would something like a 24mm prime work instead of the wide-angle zoom? I'm asking because I happen to have a Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G I use for filming my lectures and rarely anything else. I seldom shoot wide-angle stills, so I've never found any motivation to invest on more glass in that range. The 24mm f/1.4G is not exactly cheap (I got mine used), but perfect for my use case (shooting video indoors with background blur and a tight room) and also has a 77mm filter thread. That being said, I also have a lingering interest on landscape photography and astrophotography, but still not to the point of making me want to spend more money on wide-angle lenses. My 24mm f/1.4 is a specialist lens, true, but it's a workhorse for me, so I'd like to make do with it if possible.

Thanks for watching. I did mention in this video why I don’t use prime lenses. It’s completely up to you and your type of photography. If you get success with the 24mm then great. Personally I would not be using it for what I need to do.
@PedroLauridsenRibeiro
@PedroLauridsenRibeiro 2 года назад
@@adrianalfordphotography I got your explanation there... I'll be more precise: when using your wide-angle zooms for shooting landscapes, you mentioned that you tend to gravitate toward the shortest end of the zoom range, up to 24mm at the longest. A more precise phrasing to my question would be: within that more restricted range, how often do you end up using 24mm? But perhaps that's too specific... That's ok, thanks anyway!
@adrianalfordphotography
@adrianalfordphotography 2 года назад
It all depends on what I am photographing really. It could be 19mm, 20mm or 24mm. Having that option with the zoom allows me to stay put in sometimes a safer position than say getting taken out by some rogue wave. I have a friend here on RU-vid that specialises in astro. He reviewed a 24mm lens, but he found his continual sweet spot was 20mm. So he bought the 20mm F1.8 Z lens for his Z6II. Every photographer is different. We just have to respect that from each other.

Great advice Adrian. I'm a Canon 5DsR user and I have a suit of lenses that have a focal length between 16mm to 200mm. I should stick to 2 lenses: 16-35 f/2.8 and the 70 - 200mm f/2.8 (very heavy). Buti I often find myself carrying a 24-70mm and a 24-105mm. I'm going to take your advice and just take the wide angle (16-35mm) and telephoto (70-200) + a x 2 extender. I suffer from lower back issues and need to make some changes to the weight I carry. Thanks for sharing your experience. Cheers!
