Will this be the future of travelling between big cities? We visited the EBACE 2022 in Geneva to explore the newest trends in aviation. The Lilium Jet with its 30 jet engines is one future eVTOL project.
Aside from electric cars, we fully believe that the 21st. Century is ready for the next electric mobility revolution.

-Electric aircraft are an environmentally friendly option to go places quickly, flexibly, and quietly
-The battery technology is currently on a level which can cover more than 50% of today’s short haul flights
-With an eVTOL you can connect cities without public transport, or which are topographically isolated

As long as no-one closes the energy density gap, another battery electric waste of time. There won't be a factor of 5 - 10 in energy density for batteries and that's where the project fails. Get a H2 tank and fuel cells and we can talk.

If I was designing such a craft, I would build it so the battery package was fully able to be dropped in the event of a thermal runaway. Then you would pull the ballistic recovery parachute to land. See the video of an electric powered bus in Paris, France, burning uncontrollably on a city street. And that happened to more than one bus.

Operating time 5 min, range aprox. 5 miles. EDF not Jet. Whats the use? No payload, no safety. The battery doesnt exist. Nice to look at- but not for commercial use. Maybe shareholders treat with images.

hmmm its not powered by jet turbine engines... they are small electric bladed motors housed in the wings... and the electric motors are powered by batteries!!! get your story straight people !!!

Without flight duration data it’s just another unicorn 🦄 2 more years to produce a ducted vtol? Mmm. More like 2 more years to fleece investors or write off tax with an R&D grant. Maybe in two years there will be some game changer batteries they can use if they are lucky but for the moment at 3 ton they can forget vtol if they want to go far.

Quantumscpae et al are already producing high capacity non volatile (safe) batteries to OEM's for testing - I suspect by 2025 we will indeedd have the high capacity solid state batteries to make the Lilium Jet a viable aircraft

No, it’s not the future. Electric is great for small aircraft that don’t need to fly more than a few VMC minutes with no required reserve, but long range requires burning the fossil fuel at point of use, not back at the coal plant.

Fully agree that range will be a challenge. That's why Lilium is focussing on short-haul routes with their Jet.

@@PropClear I don’t understand why people think this is new and technology just needs to mature. Li-Ion batteries are in everything and every last drop of efficiency has been squeezed out. It’s possibly the most well understood thing on Earth.

I’ll answer my own question. There are 3 reasons EVs are being shoved down our throats. In order: 1. Selling Li-Ion batteries + motors moves the bulk of production to China = free slave labor and huuuge profit margins. 2. Li-Ion battery capacity times out in a matter of 1-2 years when charged to 4.20V nominal or 4-8 years at 3.95V nominal = planned obsolescence nirvana. The two use cases aren’t far apart since you sacrifice immediate capacity for long term capacity. 3. EVs are easily rationed and externally controlled to limit or eliminate personal choice and unchecked movement. Cars are the center of gravity of American freedom and that needs to be reigned in.

The cockpit is very clean and totally electric but I didn't see any circuit breakers of switches or levers. In a one-pilot aircraft, he is the pilot and engineer and total control over every system has to be within easy reach. Lithium batteries are notorious for having meltdowns and there has to be a way to mechanically dump them. Depending on LCD or LED screens means that you are depending on the electrical system to be functional. Touch screen switches will not be safe enough in an electrical fire event. I know it's early in the program but in a one-pilot plane, there can be no shortcuts for safety.

The premise of the design is the multiple redundant motors can handle one motor failure. The wing is not meant for gliding.

I think people are on to electric producing zero tailpipe emissions, but much higher overall emissions than internal combustion. They should stop saying zero emissions, makes they look dumb. Why do they think 40W incandescent light bulbs are banned?

@@PropClear So in your mind, it’s “more efficient” to produce energy millions of wire miles away, transport it against immense resistance, store it in a battery that cost more energy to make than it will ever hold in total, unstore it, then use it, than it is to burn the exact same fuel source directly at the point of use?

And why do you go to jail for selling a 40W incandescent electric light bulb, due to its catastrophic CO2 emissions? EVs burn almost a million Watts every time you press the gas pedal. 1HP = 750W

I agree, that moving an object will never be „zero emissions“ but I believe that electric is much more sustainable than burning fuel. where do you see the future? should it stay as it is?
