Your positivity is a nice change to see, I've heard so many coaches say to not audition for something big before you're ready and have more experience and that you need to build your portfolio with free jobs first and to not get a demo made before late into your career and etc etc. So definitely a nice change to hear this type of "Go and get it" vibe and positivity! Great video man, much appreciated

Go for it!!! Don’t let other peoples fear slow you down! If a Casting director or client hears an audition they don’t like they stop listening immediately, 4 seconds in, and they do not have time to write your name down and pass it on to the secret voiceover black list society to ruin your name… no one cares if you do a bad audition in the beginning, they just stop listening to it, they’re too busy to care. 🚀😅

As much as I detest pay-2-play sites, Voices and 123 do produce top tier budget jobs. I haven’t booked a ton of work through them simply because my schedule doesn’t allow me to audition as much as I would like, but when I am able, those two sites are my top priority.

You made pretty good points at the end. If you’re waiting to be ready or until someone else tells you’re ready, then you will never start. I’m still waiting until I can work with a coach so they can tell me I’m ready, because I don’t know if I’m ready or good yet, but that fear is what has been holding me back.
@jessecarrollvoiceovers
@jessecarrollvoiceovers 7 месяцев назад
Hey always calibrate your level of risk with what you are comfortable with. I’m pretty extreme with risk and it has taken me to unbelievable places like touring across Australia as a comedian WELL BEFORE I was ready to, but it made me so much better and scored me to invites to the Melbourne International Comedy festival. That never would have happened if I waited until I was ready, and in fact everyone told me I would fail and wouldn’t get into the festival.. and I proved them wrong… twice… also if I had waited until I could afford voiceover coaching then I wouldn’t be writing this right now… you never wouldn’t have seen this video because it never wouldn’t have been made…. Voiceover saved my life.. and that never would have happened if I waited… BUT… my level of risk isn’t for the giant of heart… everyone walks their own path.. You do you, but i encourage you to take a leap of faith at some point. Mark the date on your calendar and start then, then refuse to quit no matter how hard it gets… that’s how you make it.

Thanks- I too started off very quickly and pretty much ignored all the "conventional wisdom" of the so called gatekeepers. Remember, these "gatekeepers" (as much as they despise being called that and deny that's what they are doing) are the ones who anointed themselves as such, not the majority of us!

I love your content. Finally someone who teaches vo from a good place. Your coaching videos are gold. There are many on RU-vid who charge hundreds of dollars for a "sneak peak" at a coaching session. There is this endless battle between the gatekeepers and the snake oil salesmen to try and steer new vo students in a certain direction. It seems like the best path forward is the one the student ends up taking and learning as they go. Thanks for all the great content!

Hey Jesse! New Subscriber here. Thanks for this content! Thanks for saying everything I thought was true but wasn't told before. Instead, I got the run around. "You can't just get a demo and put it out there and start auditioning," I was told by Professional VO Artists/Teachers. I always knew I didn't need to go to drama school to work. Thanks for the boost! Do you have an agent too? or just get your own stuff?

Hey Jesse, hope you catch this before you shoot way up to 1 Million subs. I'm taking the plunge and videos like this are a HUGE help. Option paralysis is real and having an authoritative figure to look to really is essential at this point. Question.. with the way AI is moving, do you ever feel concerned it'll wipe voice actors out? Or does the industry suggest otherwise? Thanks dude! Ed
@jessecarrollvoiceovers
@jessecarrollvoiceovers 5 месяцев назад
Haha thanks Ed! I think it’ll be a while to get to 1 million subs, considering it took me 6 months to pass 100 haha, but only 2 months to go from 100 to 600, so here hoping lol. The answer to you question is in my video on AI! Search my channel and you’ll find it. Short answer, no AI will not take over, only maybe audiobooks, and long form narration and the other jobs that are really low paying that don’t require you to work with a director. Anyone who has worked with a director will know that as we stand in the business it would take waaaaaay longer to get out of an AI what you could get out of a human. So weee safe, until the machines replace everyone haha

I'm not sure if you have ever heard of the VO Paul Schmidt. But he is the cesspool of voice coaches. Everything that comes out of his mouth is a slap in the face for new VO's trying to break into the business and trying to get consistent work. I joined his FB page and ended up getting removed from the page because he posted that there was audiobook work available and the client was paying $55 PFH. I said I would take the work in a heartbeat because I just wanted the work. And he and another member of the page started raking me over the coals for saying that I would take work at such a low rate. And he told me I was hurting the entire industry by doing work for less than industry standard. I was shocked by his attack! It has really affected me in my journey as a new VO.
@jessecarrollvoiceovers
@jessecarrollvoiceovers 5 месяцев назад
Wow, I’m so sorry about your experience. I’m aware of Paul but I don’t know him. My philosophy is to treat everyone with respect and patience. Listen, here is no “proper” or “one way” to do VO, but I do know that this business has room for everyone and you are allowed to take any damn job you please, charge whatever you want, and go forth in the business on whatever path you choose. I have the utmost admiration for anyone beginning on this journey, as there is a lot to learn in the beginning but nothing teaches better than diving in, making mistake and getting experience. Go for it, you got this!

Hey Jesse, thanks for putting out the unfiltered truth about getting started in VO. I've been watching a lot of videos on it as I plan to jump into (equipment being shipped as I type!) I did want to ask your opinion on accents. I have a natural southern accent that I can get rid of for the sake of a character or product if need be. Have you been around or met other VAs that have southern (USA) accents?
@jessecarrollvoiceovers
@jessecarrollvoiceovers 6 месяцев назад
My pleasure Robert! Congrats on taking the leap! The accent isn’t an issue if you’re doing spots that require a southern accent but if you want to work a lot you’re going to have to nail down the “general, or standard, American accent (non regional)”. Super easy to nail down. It’s basically like what most news casters, or even tv show hosts like Colbert, Kimmel and Fallon have.

@@Anton_thailand1993 you 10000% do NOT need a website to get started. I didn’t have one for the first 2 years and I was making bank from the start. Take that money and get on a casting site and get in the game first. That’s my opinion, lots of coaches will disagree but they’re wrong…. Unless you want to get a website and spend the next year marketing your devices with only a demo just trying to get an audition, when you could sign up for a casting site today and 10-20 today! Once you have like 10-20 jobs completed (and the completed flies from those jobs to put on a website) the think about getting a website. But it’s up to you ultimately. Me, I don’t like to waste time, just get in the game. I can’t tell you how many people I meet with who have a good demo, a great website and work their buns off trying to market their services and get no where. The high cost is a bit of a bouncer. It does keep those low confidence people from joining the tier. It's a confidence gate. Only those confident that they can compete would consider joining above 888. Even 888 is a hit. But if you can't take the hit, don't get in that ring.
