I have the OG OP-1 and to be honest I've really not used it enough to justify it, or to get the the point where it's shortcomings (I always end up getting stuck thinking about how to record all the parts to retain reverb tails etc if I'm going to further refine the sketch in ableton) are outweighed by how much fun it is, so do I want an OP-1 field? Absolutely! 😁

the vocoder tipped me over the edge. i bought one. I'm in love with it! its such a wonderful upgrade in every way from the original, it solves all of the problems I've had with the original. It really ties my traditional instrument and electronic setups together! I'm keeping the og1 since i've had it for almost 10 years (mostly letting my friends and family use it since im not worried about the tape now), but now its time to try not looking crazy to my girlfriend when im talking to the synth for the vocoder now haha

I posted a quick vocoder track to my channel the day the update hit, was having so much fun with it. I'll use it way more than on the microfreak, just because of the sort of device the OP-1 Field is. Loved your explanations and I've gotta sort a different headset - in the end I used the built in mic with my sennheiser in ear earphones, since the Apple Earpods as you say didn't sound great microphone wise and the level was too low. I think i'm gonna have to go down that radio rabbit hole though :) Anyway thanks for the great content, as always :)

This is just SO good and yet still, I'm not running out to buy one. Don''t get me wrong, I love this little thing, but it frustrates me knowing that EVERYTHING it's capable of, the iPad Pro could do. I get it, wrapping it up in a cute well thought out solidly built unit like this gets it's unique selling point but carrying around more devices than I need just bugs the hell out of me. The day Teenage Engineering wrap this up in an app, even a subscription! Dudes, take my money. 😇

@@Hexxedtone I love seeing this level of passion and commitment, yup Teenage Engineering know they’re crowd. Magazine ‘Future Music’ got it right with: - “Given how much it costs, Teenage Engineering is going to have to add a lot of firmware-update- flavoured value to its OP-1 Field synth in order to convince certain people to buy it” Don’t get me wrong, it’s cute. I like it I do but the iPad’s so much more adaptable and capable and thats what you want on the road. Watch a movie, send an email, make a synth. Yes OP-1’s a toy.

Unless you've spent time with the OP-1 Field you can't really appreciate it. I get that it's not for everyone, even if it cost $99 it wouldn't be for everyone. For me anyway I find I'm very productive on it vs Logic / Ableton and all my plugins. Other than my Nord Grand it's my favourite bit of gear.

I’ve got a band of 5 boys playing real instruments, like guitars and drums and such. We record on my daddy’s ol’ wire recorder he picked off a gypsy in the war. I guess we livin in some kind of Sci-Fi, Sputnik Space Age now! Them aliens gonna take my pretty singin’ voice. 😅

You need to look into the hype mic by Apogee. Has its own A.D. converters, preamp, and built-in analog compressor. It’s small, comes with a really nice carrying case, has a headphone input, and USB. If it tells you anything, I have a Neumann TLM 49 with a UA 710 preamp, and I use the hype mic more than anything now. It’s perfect for travel, way more diverse than the Neumann and sounds amazing. 11:48

Very nice video and demonstration. Regarding the way you have setup your OP-1 to the iPad, I understand that you can record OP-1 within the iPad, apply effects and then reroute it to OP-1 through usb audio without feedback loop? Is using a hub necessary or can it work directly with usb c? I have already tried but there is too much risk of feedback loop each time and lot of mute/unmute to do. Your technique looks perfect

Did you also tested do modify the Vocoded Voice with the "Element" LFO (which is of course no LFO) and choosed there the "Mic Input"? That could be interesting. And did you tested the M-1 headset from TE? - wonder if they were also a candidate to test; because I think of getting them. Also: nice video, goog graphics and good structure.

For the price, I think I will stick with my software Vocoder for iPad, and the built-in Vocoder for Logic Pro X (the whole DAW and all the sound packs is cheaper than the OP-1). If the OP-1 was available for €300 I would consider purchasing one.

Really cool. I just bought an original used OP-1....you're not helping my GAS. BTW - I looked in the app store and several comments say that WEBSDR doesn't work in AUM or Garageband (or at all).

As you can see in my video, I am using WEBSDR in AUM. I even did 20 minutes ago. It works, but it’s got some bugs. The engine needs to be started after loading the plugin. And one cannot close the plugin window because sound stops. So the window needs to be open at all times. This info is available but a lot of users miss that. Also I do you switch from AUM to another app, audio also stops from WEBSDR. You’ll have to reload the plug if you do that. When I’m using it I just keep a little window open and I’m good.
