Musician Malena Cadiz and vintage rug kingpin Mikael Kennedy wear the Open Road 6X in Fawn and Silverbelly, respectively, at their home in the hills of Los Angeles.
When you open yourself up to the road, you never know where the road will take you. For Malena Cadiz and her husband MIkael Kennedy, a healthy sense of adventure combined with a steadfastness of spirit has allowed them to follow their passions from one coast to the other. For Cadiz, who grew up in Michigan and Singapore before working in fashion in New York, it’s continuing a tradition of dreamy down-home folk music that has been echoing through the hills of LA since the ‘60s. "Ever since I was a teenager I was obsessed with all things vintage, things that are one-of-a-kind, the kind of style that feels authentic,” she says, “When I put on a Stetson as a musician, it feels like I'm part of this lineage of artistry and style. I feel like I’m ready for adventure.”
For Kennedy, it’s becoming, nearly by accident, the menswear world’s favorite purveyor of vintage rugs. After a chance encounter with a retiring antique rug dealer, Kennedy bought out his stock and put his career as a fashion and art photographer on hold. Today he runs King Kennedy, which sells a curated selection of rugs, as well as one-of-a-kind clothing, footwear accessories crafted from the centuries-old carpets he collects on his travels. "Everything I do comes from traveler culture, hitchhiking across the country or traveling with bands and there was always this checklist of things you needed for travel: a good jacket, a good bag and a good hat. The Stetson Open Road fit into that for me."
