Spencer sold 111,000 to US government vs 1,608 Henry’s….. but for all the costly Spencer tooling to make so many, they went out of business after the war… think Henry were available in mid 1862 while Spencer’s showed up in 1863 in decent numbers

Very few things I enjoy more than my 1873, the Henry being the granddaddy of my baby it is always fun to see. Maybe someday I'll go all the way back to 1860, but the loading gate and fore end are such vast improvements on the '66 and '73 I don't know if I can go without. Great video, as always, Karl. Thanks for showing all the operators out there the original 'assault rifle'.
@Taeil0151

Highly doubt I would ever use my Big Boy (chambered in .357) for home defense unless it was my only rifle left but it is so goddamn fun to shoot. I love taking my S/W 686 and this out to the range. It's kinda nice to shoot remaining rounds left in the box without only partially filling up a revolver cylinder group. That little OCD eats away at me.

This is the absolute best instructional video I have ever seen on the 1860 Henry. I have an Uberti Case Hardened model in 44-40. Mine doesn't have the lever lock though. The speed loading tube is a great idea. Reminds me of the Blakely? tube that is for my Spencer. I most like the mag spacer idea so you don't need to worry about the follower contacting your hand during rapid fire. Never thought of that but it's genius.

A very useful video, Karl, and thanks for it. Several of my friends and associates have long term interest in the Civil War and this specific weapon is a topic of conversation wherever and whenever they meet. When the opportunity arises I will force them to watch it (until they realize how very apropos it is and push me out of the way). And-wow! You hand loaded that rifle from a cartridge belt faster than a rifled musketeer can recharge his weapon a single time! That's the same level of combat innovation that the SMG brought to WW2-one requiring a complete reformulation of small formation infantry tactics.

A very well presented "Henry Manual - of - Arms"! For my sling, I made a copy of the original from scrap leather, a brass buckle, and a Winchester-type hook ( exactly like your image ). I also attached a 3/4" brass ring on the barrel sling staple, in order to keep the steel hook from marring the staple. I went with the Winchester-type hook because I couldn't find a brass / bronze hook. To prevent the hook from popping off, I pinched it, so that it would just snap over the 3/4" brass ring; it has never popped off, and requires a little force to remove.

I have an Uberti 1860 44/40 Engraved (not laser) with no date on it with correct period Engraved. Think very early Uberti. Well, I was cleaning the internal toggle (I fire blanks and real Black powder rounds) and I dropped one of the cover plates. I was wearing shorts… well, 1 hour later, I finished cleaning and notice a nice LONG GASH on my foot and some blood. It is now stinging after 2 hours. Well, it is darn sharp!! I am in a Civil War Reenactment club (ACWA of California). I do not fire the rifle in battle but do a rapid fire test of 14 rounds in 9 seconds…….Smokeless rounds have less kick and flatter profile … only drop at 100 yards.

I learned a way to avoid the "Henry Hop". I use the fingertips of my left hand on one side and the tip of my thumb on the other side, this creates a hole where the follower can go through. I will say if you shoot a lot, you need to wear a glove because that one piece barrel and magazine gets VERY hot.
