@@vapaus831 In early days of Qing Empire, Opium is a daily commodity consumed by Manchu nobles or very rich people. Poor people consumes Opium only after the trade wars, when opium are more safe and more affordable. In Chinese medicine, there is a famous concept of duality among medicine and poison. Every medicine is a poison and every poison is a medicine. However, daily commodity is another category of matter. Opium can be used as a daily commodity, just like soft drinks or toothpastes in modern days. We use them daily and we never consider that is a drug. And it is essential among Manchu nobles.

The beginning about how china was being ruled by foreign monarchs reminded me of yuan shikai's han-centric monarchy restoration. He's not talked about very much despite being extremely influential in the revolution. A biography on him or the Xinhai revolution in general would make for a cool video.

Not gonna lie, I find myself extremely impressed with this video. I've watched a lot about the Opium wars but this goes into so much more detail and context than pretty much anything else in this caliber. I actually screamed with anticipation and excitement when part 2 was cliffhanged (cliffhung?) You've done it again Ezekiel; colour me impressed, what ever shade that be. Edit: I thought of some feedback that Ezekiel might find useful and would like to know other's view on this too. The increase of production, transitions, and background art is very much welcome. On the other hand, I often find the sound effects he uses too loud and distracting from his voice. I think they would be much more seemless if placed between sentences instead of th middle of them, and give them time to breath. While I understand that you want to make the speaking more interesting, it's more of a disturbance than a welcome addition. Again, your research and writting is outstanding. Keep up the incredible content my dude!

I think the biggest thing was arrogance on the side of the Qing. To them, they'd conquered the known world. Everyone else were barbarians centuries behind. So, to them, they weren't actually very far behind. Yes, they'd been slow to modernize their military, but they were still at the front. There's no need to worry. The only people beyond the sea were people in small ships and a few islands off of the coast. Of course, this was far from the truth as anyone would know. The world was much bigger than they really knew as they were simply far too insulated geographically being hemmed in by incredible mountains on all sides, and a coastline which only had some islands nearby, and beyond that impossible expanse of ocean. What's left? That's the framework that was in their minds when they started getting reports that they were surrounded on all sides by Europeans, specifically "red heads," as was known in Chinese. But to them, that didn't compute. To the north were the vanquished horse archers who, though barbarian, were not red heads To the southwest, was India. The Great civilization which too was never controlled by red heads, though they had little contact. The only red heads they'd ever seen were from that single port, and of tales far beyond from 2 millenia prior across some large trading network. It was inconceivable for these redheads to be in the north, while also through their port, while also ruling that great civilization to the south. How would that happen? And it was with the opium war that they'd learn how.
@csmth96

Love your video man. Keep up the good job. Also, can you include this in your next video. There is stories of where when the British attack and sunk the Qing's warship, the Han chinese peasant was cheering like watching a show. Which shows that ever since the Qing dynasty is formed, there was a clear division between the Han chinese peasant population and the Manchu overload and the new and old aristocrats. Most chinese Dynasty policies in history is forced on internal rather the external issues which is especially true for the Qing when the Manchu was a small population controlling over a much larger population. So to the Qing, a few British attacking is much less scarier than a few Chinese peasant revolting because that can lead to millions of Chinese revolting.

Amazing, I had my doubts about this. Some really interesting parts I didn't know about. There can be allot of irony/similarty to current events and china American relations. History seems doomed to repeat itself. Particularly with corruption, pride, warmongering and state owned business practices. People often simplify the opium wars to the drug itself but fail to understand trade, economic and political pressures.
@NightPhoenix.Y
@NightPhoenix.Y Год назад
Yeah an American company has been selling opioids on the Chinese market and lobbying it to be considered essential medicine. Luckily enough Chinese officials neutered the trade. Unluckily enough the US suffered and is suffering from the same company except they do not have the power to crack down in these legalized drugs

I like the video for the most part, but something I think should have been expanded upon are the reasons the trade imbalances that existed. Like the reason the Han trade monopoly existed, corruption, and the Qing Dynasty basically refusing to allow manufactured goods to enter the country.
