A while ago I bought the stove rack made by Kite Lamp in Taiwan. It is a nice upgrade for these 111 stoves as it holds the pots and pans much better then the somewhat flimsy original pan holders.
All these stoves are impossible to find for a reasonable price...15 years ago there were plenty at goodwill but today you are lucky to find a Primus no5 in bad shape...
I agree they are great reliable designs. The hiker+ I have and it’s powerful but no soul like these older models. Like you I get several. I have the older before the 111 version aswell the Optimus No. 11! A great stove and powerful aswell! It’s listed on CCS. You probably saw it already though. Great video. I hope you do more like this!👍
Great demo. Huge diffrence in sound between roarer burners thinks i prefer the silent ones just for the pieace lol. They all nice in there own way though thanks for the upload.
@@roynavjord7978 Check all your seals and try running a few tablespoons of carb cleaner mixed in with the fuel. My 111's are all quite fast. Only the MSR Reactor or three burner Coleman can get faster boils.
I have had a stove addiction for over 40 years - 1-svea123 1-8r 2-199 2-111 cobra 2-222b and coleman, msr. Small pressure cookers work great at all altitudes, saves fuel.
111 T picture here. Looks like the rest of the tribe with a silent burner put on top. see it here. luontola.com/luontola/ultimate/index_eng.htm In the C or D they have a brand new lower burner design called the Cobra. The lease elegant of the bunch and outlined here. classiccampstoves.com/threads/optimus-arctic-111c-111d.23393/
Hi, I recently bought a used Optimus 111 8, I wondered if it was a B model initially but I'm sure the embossed lid reads 111 8 and not 111 B. Inside the lid is a brief instruction listing it as a 111 Hiker. It also lists possible fuels as Kerosene,Parafin, White Gasoline, petrol. Alcohol or Methylated spirit can also be used for which a restrictor tube is provided. I only had the Meths to hand so tried to replicate your test using that and an encapsulated based stainless steel pan which took almost 8 minutes to boil 2 cups of water.....my question is, does meths produce less power than other fuels as it seems to burn less fiercely than your stoves and would the steel pan also account for the longer boil time ?I have yet to see another 111 the same as mine, it has the quiet burner with right hand control knob which is flat and red, and the case is silver painted with a large embossed Optimus emblem top centre with Optimus 111 8 embossed lower right of the lid. Can anybody confirm if there is 111 8 model as the closest looking stove I've seen was badged 111 7.
+Susan Goodbrand Hello...Alcohol has half the energy per weight as Kerosene or gas. It will be slower on Meths but should burn very cleanly. Not sure about a 111-8. Never heard of one. Very interesting.
Thanks N61 for teaching me more and more about these old stoves. I have been lazy and have not yet cleaned up the 8R I recently acquired. I will let you know how it goes when I make some progress.
Brilliant explained video and brilliant commentary, of a great classic. Like rikuk, my favourite is the plain 111 the older version, either silent or roarer with the flat red green or white control knob, that was made for paraffin/kerosene but with a change can work off of white gas and meths
If you take off the wind screen the 111 has 4 vapourizing tubes that lead into the burning unit..the 111B is designed for white gas only and only has two. The color of handles changed over time or mix and matching has happened over the last 20+ years. The 111 is the better stove if you have a choice as it is more versatile. I'll see if I can find a link for you as a picture would help.
www.berniedawg.com/optimus-11/olympus-digital-camera-28/ This is a picture of the 4 tubes on the Kerosene burning 111 from a guy called Bernie Dawg who repairs stoves. Great Site.
Interesting enough the 111C burner is far enough away from the pot stand that it doesn't produce CO when the flame hits the cold pot. The other 111's can produce a bit of CO when melting ice. I played around with the C and with a G jet it burns quite a bit hotter. I like the C but agree that the Original and the T are the queens of the 111 world.
I'm curious who the Kerosene burns without wicks, can you pump it like Naphtha? one more thing, when you say Gasoline you MEAN diesel NOT ordinary unleaded Gas?
when he says gasoline he means white gas or naptha. b on the 111b stands for bensin. these types of stoves were not designed to burn automotive or aviation gasoline/petrol.
Supply and demand. They are wonderful stoves, no longer made for a decade or much more...and the supply is dwindling as hoarders (I mean collectors) like me have bought them up. When I bought them there would be 10-12 on eBay at a time and they would go for 50-60.00. Now there are 0-2 on and the bids get driven up.
you can still find them at thrift stores, swap meets and garage sales for ok prices. the cheapest 111b i ever found was $5 at a garage sale and it was working, but very rusty. ebay drives up the prices, the prices took a huge climb during the 2006-08 economy crash when desperate people were selling off all of their toys..
I didn't see an Optimus 8 R in your line up. It is similar to the Svea in coming with out a pump but you can see its lineage is similar to the others. Enjoyed the vid.
I like these older stoves. They are tough and reliable. Only problem I heard of was a fellow that removed the fuel cap while the stove was in use. Vaporized his tent but I gather he was ok. That of course was not the fault of the stove. The tank size is also a plus for me. A guy could do a weekend and not have to carry extra fuel. Thanks.
The 111t is far superior to the c model. The c model incorporates changes designed to benefit the manufacturer NOT the user. They should have found a way to raise the burner closer to the pot stand. They wanted the 11 explorer ant 111c to use the same burner without regard for the combustion physics.
Great video north61 I just saw that it's possible to convert those stoves to alcool so what it takes and where we can get it in canada if possible. If not in USA. About the silent burner, it's fine but for myself I really enjoy the sound of the roar ones. The differences between different fuel type like alcool vs white gas or kerosene I found an interesting table of comparison on Zen Stoves site that list them all with infos about molecule structure, boiling point, BTU etc... very interesting here is the link even if I'm quite sure you already know it but it can help others who are reading those comments zenstoves.net/StoveChoices.htm#Fuels
