I mean, the idea that Kim Sun-Yung was an anti- Miyagi has always been pretty much a given. All of his students have this ruthless, no mercy & nothing is off limits philosophy.

@@rare6967 no they both are, the only reason Daniel is the way he is is because Mr. Myagi taught him to be peacefull, however in season 4 when daniel visits Chozen in Okinawa it is clearly stated that Myagi Do was used to kill

this is very interesting and shows that the original cobra kai wasn't meant for being all bad theirs a reason why cobra kai became that way is cuz the only way to save their home is to show no mercy and similar to what chozen said the only way to survive is to kill this just shows that the cobra kai dojo was technically not meant to be a bad influence it was just the opposite of the migai do style but not in a bad way in a good way kinda Like Johnny's eagle fang dojo and cobra kai dojo it wasn't meant to be a bad influence but it did but the real question is who started to make the bad influence of cobra kai this taught me a lot and now i see the cobra kai dojo a way different way.

Korea was a (two) war ravaged nation peninsula. A lot of pissed off people. During the 1950s, the Moo Duk Kwan branch of Tang Soo Do had many black belts who were known as enforcers and thugs back them. Tang Soo Do training decades ago was tough, not like today's McDojo world we're living in. Kim wouldn't have been anything special.

Isn’t “No Mercy” more applied to Silver and Kreese due to their experience in Vietnam? Or was it just a coincidence that showing mercy got them in terrible situations and it just happened to coincide with the martial art that they were trained? In all fairness we have never seen or heard Silver or Kreese teach on how to interact in the world, only during a fight. If teaching to be an asshole and never showing mercy in any situation, that type of society or culture wouldn’t last long. The only true asshole in the entire series is Kyler, he just became a bigger asshole once he joined Cobra Kai.

To be fair kyler is only a 2d character, so we don’t see much of his side of the story compared to characters like Miguel, Sam Robby, hawk and Tory. If the writers decide to humanize his character more then maybe we can see through his perspective and why he turned out the way he is.

@@Zurround ; you too make a great point. And after reading your comment, it got me thinking; what if Master Kim’s philosophy is more closer to the way Johnny wanted Cobra Kai to be? Be bad ass but not an asshole. If you look at Kreese’s teaching it was more militaristic (if that is the right word lol) compared to Silver (very short scene of him teaching), Silver’s style of teaching felt more like a martial arts class. He even used another language while bowing to the students. Unfortunately, Silver is crazy so we all know how he is going to end up. But, I cannot help it believe that Master Kim is the “anti Miyagi” most martial arts teaching is all about self defense and showing mercy. But, I can be 100% wrong so we shall see.

@@runningbreymedina1475 yeah, kreese was the same way back in the karate kid films, but once cobra Kai came we actually got to see more of kreese’s backstory and understood more of his perspective, unlike the 2d abusive sensei character that lacked depth.

And during this same period Okinawa karate was picking up influence from Kung-fu from Japanese occupied Taiwan. Japan occupied Taiwan from 1895 to the end of WW2. They occupied Taiwan even before Korea. Chozen Miyagi (that mr. Miyagi is modeled after) making several trips to Taiwan & China to study White Crane Kung fu. This is where the Master Han connection will come in.

Kim Sung Yung was just a product of his time since Kim Sung Yung became known during the Korean war so that means he grew up during the Japanese occupation of Korea and the Japanese treated the Koreans like dirt and then the Korean war broke out 5 years later and he taught American forces and the communists didn't show mercy to the American and south korean forces so they couldn't afford to show mercy so both him growing up during the Japanese occupation and the Korean war molded him into the master that he was

This is such a good take. My husband is Korean and we actually had talked about this earlier. About how karate in Japan finding its way into Korea. Also I can’t speak for obviously the whole country. But my husband would always tell me that Koreans generally don’t like Japanese lol especially the older generation. Because of the occupation. They were very abusive to the Koreans, killed people, and would force Korean students to speak Japanese, learn Japanese and pledge allegiance to the Japanese flag. So I could totally see the hatred story happening

They have a picture of Pei Mei on the thumbnail🤣. As cool as the karate kid verse is, there is no one in the Miyagi verse that would have a chance against Pei Mei. Not even all at once. Pei Mei is literally unbeatable. Within the martial arts world he is a god.

Kim Sung Yung and captain Turner represent the first Evolution of the way of the fist which is used on the battlefield and was used to destroy an enemy without mercy John Kreese and cobra kai were the second evolution of the way of the fist which kept the no mercy and no honor philosophy but wasn't used to kill so it adapted to the times somewhat Johnny Laurence and eagle fang was the thrid evolution of the way of the fist and he changed the apporach to not start the fight but to finish the fight so he took John Kreese's teachings and adapted to the times then Daniel and Johnny teaming up and blending their respective styles and teachings and philosophies was the fourth evolution to the way of the fist by combining the teachings of both Mr Miyagi and Kim Sung Yung And the fifth evolution will be brought on by the next generation

I can’t wait to watch this when I get home from work! I’ve been asking you about and theorizing on Master Kim. Exploring the true origins of Cobra Kai karate is something that peaks my curiosity. Tang Soo Do is a Korean version of karate that translates to the way of the Tang hand. Sounds familiar to Cobra Kai’s way of the fist.

I don’t see how. When Terry Silver said his master was Kim Sun Yung in KK3 to Miyaigi, he didn’t seem to know the name or anything about him. Also, if they had similar background teachers, I’m sure Chozen and Miagayi would recognize the style and vice versa. Cool vid, but I don’t see it.

WATCHPARTY: Something else that I would like to add that while it’s possible that Sensei Kim could be the Anti Chozen, it’s also possible that she could be the Anti Julie as well. Because think about similarities that they could share: both are women martial artists, both were trained by Martial Arts Masters and going by Sensei Kim’s description that we all ready got she is a dark and troubled woman that embraces the darkness due to her own hardships while Julie who was in a dark place because of the loss of her parents and her grandfather, but with Mr. Miyagi’s guidance was able to embrace the light side by keeping the people that she loved a live in her heart.

WATCHPARTY: This was an awesome breakdown. I really loved hearing all of your thoughts on this. I wonder how she and Tory will connect during the season. Do you think that there’s a possibility that we will learn more about the Kim family and that we will be taken to a different part of the world and learn more about Silvers connection with him (maybe he was the one that taught him the quick silver method)? I think that we are going to learn more about the Quick Silver Method, there is a possibility that there’s more to it then we know and that what Silver was teaching was just the basics of it.

It could be, but there is a chance that he could either be lying 🤥 or only telling the truth as he sees fit because remember he is a very skilled deceptive snake in the grass. So it could be possible that while he may have come up with the name for each as well as for the method itself as well as made some adjustments to them in order to make them his own, but the skills and the moves might be from master Kim and they may actually be even more dangerous then they already are, because we to think about who’s idea that it might have been to have Tory use it by using stone instead of wood (Sensei Kim’s or Sensei Silvers). Silver used wood in the karate kid 3 and Sensei Kim was standing right next to Tory when she was punching those stones.

@@watchparty1 What I mean by that is, you know Mr. Miyagi put the moves that he knew and made them into chores to the point that to the naked eyes they weren't karate moves at all, it was just yard work. Same thing when it came to the wheel technique in Season 2 instead of using the ground he used the wheel in the middle of the pond. So what I'm saying that maybe the moves are from Master Kim who in turn taught it to Silver who in turn took those moves and made his own tactic out of them and took the pleasure of making them into a method that he named after himself

I think they should do Miyagi show/movie. However it shouldn't be Mr. Miyagi. The person we know and love in the original Karate Kid trilogy but Miyagi Chōjun (Miyagi Father). The original elder teacher who taught Mr. Miyagi and Sato karate in the first place. Especially if he going to be major rival of Master Kim. Which would make sense since Master Kim and Master Miyagi Chōjun are there 1st gernertion. Then 2nd gernertion for each of there style. In Miyagi Do it was Sato and Mr. Miyagi and in Cobra Kai it was Geroge Turner who then taught his military students like Kreese and Terry Silver. Then it goes with 3rd gernertion with Miyagi Do vs Cobra Kai with Daniel Russo and Chozen (Sato nephew) while Cobra Kai have Johnny Lawrence and little Daniel Larusso (since he did technically learned a little by Terry Silver in Karate Kid 3). (I can't said Mike Barnes was hired to scared Daniel. Mike Barnes was already Karate professional before Terry Silver can reached him). You might also count Master Kim teaching his own daughter is way too. Which you can see the rivalry between Chozen in the next season. Since Chozen dose know about Master Kim by explaining to Daniel who he is. Which now leads to kids in Cobra Kai. Half going to Cobra Kai and the other half going to Miyagi Do and Eagle Fang.

I feel like Terry Silver Will loses the Dojo like Kreese. I believe this because Tory will learn under Master Kim and They will team up against Silver, but then lose, Then Kreese escapes and they defeat Silver together perhaps. Team composition fight three people chaining attacks at Kreese, like an MCU fight. That would be so awsome.

If your theory is true watchparty about Okinawa controlling Korea and the land maybe master Kim learned their karate and that’s where the strike first hard and no mercy came from as he probably had brewing hatred from the Japanese that had control of their land and probably slaughtered their people and that they deserved no mercy

Tang Soo Do origins is based on these martial arts styles: Subak, Taekyeon, Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, & Shotokan.

Okinawa never controlled Korea, Japan did. In fact, Okinawa like Korea was a victim of Japanese occupation. Okinawa was part of what was once known as the Ryukyan kingdom before it was annexed by Japan. They have their own culture distinct from the Japanese and [endangered] language. Anyway, during the Japanese occupation of the Korean peninsula, Japan placed a ban on the practice of Korean indigenous styles, but did allow them to practice Japanese styles (Shotokan, Shito-ryu, Shudokan, Judo, Kumdo, Aikijutsu). One of those Koreans was a man named Won Kuk Lee who had studied abroad in Japan and trained in Shotokan karate. When he returned to Korea he opened a school in 1944 and founded Tang Soo Do. Soon other Koreans who had also trained in Japan or students of their opened school and also began calling what they taught Tang Soo Do (or Kong Soo Do). One of Lee's students, Hwang Kee would begin teaching his own style of Tang Soo Do, which was a mix of Lee's system with Hwang's background in Chinese styles (which has never been specifically named as far as I know). During the 1950s, black belts from Hwang's Moo Duk Kwan school were known for being being enforcers and thugs. You gotta remember, they had just gotten their freedom from the Japanese in 1945 and in a handful of years later were in another war with their own northern brothers and sisters. This left a lot of them very angry and bitter. So what the fictional Kim felt wasn't out of the ordinary. Old school Moo Duk Kwan style Tang Soo Do was very rough and tough, not like the McDojo stuff you see everywhere today across the martial arts board.

Doubt it. Koreans generally aren't fond of the Japanese, considering the number of times they were invaded by them. Also, Chozen has already expressed his love for Kumiko. Regarding Kim's age, this is where the casting director fucked up. Kim would be nearly 50 years old presently. They went with an actress in her mid 30s instead of an "older" one like Kelly Hu, Lucy Lui or Ming-na Wen. I mean ethnically speaking, going with Alicia Hannah Kim (Korean descent) was a good choice since the character was South Korean, but age wise they messed up.

What if the "Miyagi" show shows that Cobra Kai was taught by the original Miyagi member? That had either bad teachings or had 2 rival students. That's why Mr. Miyagi is always saying only bad teacher, as he learned from the past even a bad Miyagi member could lead to terrible results, Cobra Kai.

Yes thats possible. But honestly we saw in KK3 what happens when Cobra Kai Grandmasters fight a Miyagi Do Grandmaster, its not even close. In the Karate Kid Universe Miyagi Do Karate seems to be way superior to Cobra Kai Karate, and i personally always felt Miyagi could have killed Silver and Kreese with ease when if he wanted to. Thats a reason why i think in a normal fight Chozen will bast Silver away and it wont even be close.

@Thrill of Games, no problem :). Chozen wasnt sober when he fought Silver, he still had alcohol in his system. That was the writers way to make the fight closer. But in the end Chozen still won, he showed mercy and Johnnys grunting was the reason why Silver could escape and hurt Chozen with his Katana. First they fought unarmed. Silver landed the first spinning kick. Then Chozen went into his full fight mode and hurt Silvers leg, and Terry was unsure he could beat him unarmed, so he took the Katana. And in the end Silver lost to a Miyagi-Do Master. Daniel isnt even a Grandmaster, and he beat Silver very easy all in all. This time his balance was there, and his wife and daughter were standing on the side and supported him. BTW Hayden Schlossberg confiremd not long ago Chozen is the best from all who are still alive. He said only Sunyung is like equal to Miyagi, followed by Sato and todays Chozen. Silver, Barnes, Johnny, Daniel and the others are behind them.

I am almost certain Kim Daun is master Kim Sun-Yung granddaughter. Hayden didn't say what he said for no reason, maybe it was the plan of the writers to say it anyway at some point. Anyway it can't be for no reason. Three option: 1.We are going to get a spin off with this master. Which is the most likely option. 2.We are going to get many flashbacks of Terry or even his potential granddaughter. Giving us more pieces of information little by little. When Terry said he and John trained directly under Kim Sun-Yung, I didn't believe him I automatically assumed he is lying. We might see if he is lying or not. 3.This one is for fun so don't scold me on that one. What if master Kim Sun-Yung is still alive, still teaching and might appear on the show? I know it's a slim chance. But I think it would be cool if the actual master made an appearance. I wonder if he knows to full extant of what CK is doing. Terry said when he met Miyagi- "My master sends his apology for John kreese's dishonorable actions." We later find out that it's of course a lie, but it implies that master Kim Sun-Yung is not evil and won't support crimes. He might be tough but fair person.

Kim Sung Young...Korean The old guy in the thumbnail...Chinese. Ummm, yeah...two different ethnic groups, nationalities, cultures, languages, etc. Maybe should have gone with an actual Korean, like Jun Chong whose dojang was used in the movies and whose picture was shown in the movies.
