In this video i share the origin of the name Shona, which describes Zimbabwe's dominant tribe the Shona, this is a very important piece of Zimbabwe's history, if not African History.
The Shona are a Bantu Tribe living between the Zambezi and Limpopo River, these are the
same people that built the great Zimbabwe and were responsible for the Mutapa State, Rozvi State.

Interesting to find some indepth Zimbabwean history. Most African channels on here try their best when talking about Zimbabwe but, they aren't aware of most of this stuff. You have a new subscriber keep up the good work. Our history and culture needs to be taught, I've been learning so much about our ancestors lately I'm just disappointed I didn't know this stuff growing up as a kid.

Some sources say the word Shona was introduced in the 1920's during the colonisation of Zimbabwe in 1923. Before that it was Munhumutapa, Rozvi/Lozwi, kore kore etc and different chiefdoms..
@itstadiwa284
@itstadiwa284 2 года назад
It was officiated in that year by Clement Doke yes, but had long been thought of. Prior to that, it was Kalanga then Karanga for all "Shona" people. Shona groups are related to Kalanga and Venda people, they are under Kalanga nation if it's ever to be a thing. Karanga history is similar to Ndebele, in that while Ndebele history began when Mzilikazi left SA and came to settle elsewhere with his own nation, Karanga/shona people too shoot off from Kalanga and went to settle elsewhere and became their own nation. Both of their relation with their sires remains but they became independent from them. 1: KALANGA to KARANGA Kalanga was dropped at Great Zimbabwe where Kalangas settled along with Hungwe, Mbire, Remba who were arriving into Masvingo areas of Zimbabwe, influenced from said speakers resulted in the drop of L from Kalanga becoming Karanga. These people would become known as Karanga (this was before, rozvi, nyai, korekore etc. came up) following the death of Mavhudzi Chibatamatosi father of Nyatsimba Mutota, his cousin/brother Mukwati who wanted the throne decided to fight with him and said "ibve togwa" (saka torwa, so then we will wrestle/fight in Karanga (original shona) - he managed to beat Mutota because he was unprepared, and he started being called Togwa due to his statement and his willingness to battle for what he wanted hence Togwa Mukwati. 2: KARANGA to KOREKORE Meanwhile, Nyatsimba Mutota left GZ with people who believed in him, they wanted place to go to and he remembered a beautiful place he had been too before his father's death looking for salt and minerals etc., this a place in Zambezi valley. So he took the people and went there upon arriving, he was met with the Tonga and Tavara who lived there, last time he came looking for things so they were friendly as they are relative however this time he was coming for permanent residence so they fought and he won. He then settled in the dande area near Zambezi, what would happened next is where the name change occured. See, these Karangas would move year by year trying to find the perfect place to settle and start building their kingdom due to this the Tavara called them "VeGore ne Gore", and this name stuck and was later altered to Vagoregore then Vakorekore ("those of year by year"). After settling, Nyatsimba Mutota removed his totem of Moyo chirandu and chose Nzou Samanyanga as to show he was bigger than his enemies. He would marry a lot of women, first from Karanga who he had come with, and from the Tonga and Tavara, he married them to show the Tonga and Tavara people that even though they had fought on his arrival, they would fight no more and would be family, hence marrying women from their tribes. He had approximately 200 wives according to history give or take. 2.2 Karanga to Buja These people are a Korekore peoples, they are a shoot of from Korekore with influences from the Sena/Barwe people, hence why there are some differences. i'll explain the rest later im getting lazy to keep typing😂😂😂😂😂 Venda people from what I know are heavily related to Karanga of Masvingo and Kalanga of Matabeleland - who also happen to be related or where once one people as stated above. The Ngona are the original Venda according to Venda history, and they mixed with Kalanga and also Karanga-Rozvi people.

This is likely the most correct explanation. Many scholars have said the same. People are overlooking the fact that you are actually siting sources. So i think if people disagree then can look up the sources. Its unfortunate most people just say they disagree without siting sources. If in deed there is a source from the 17th century by indian traders then there is merit in the theory. The only thing to do is verify the sited source.

You need to do proper research before giving people poison. What was the tribe's name before trading with however you claim and why did the tribe in your research agree to change their name so as to suit these traders? You need to admit the fact that someone had to give identity to the tribe in your research because of a certain reason and we all know who did. The twisting and turning will not heal this land.

If I may put it this way. The word shona came from Zion. The Lemba were not the only Jewish like people in Zimbabwe and South Africa. In fact the Zezuru, particularly those who settled in modern day Buhera, known as the Nyashanu's, or those with full senses were also part of a greater tribe that settled in north eastern South Africa. The word sayona, may have been a misinterpretation of ZION like. Either the Lemba were followers or came much later than the earlier settlers but had a similar kind of religion to that already being practised by the Zezurus of Buhera. Mapungubwe may not have been the very first human settlement in southern Africa but may have eventuated from east-coastal south africa more closer to Mozambique. The earlier Shonas were not Zionist, but the religion that later came from Moses and the ten commandments, was much similar and may have been practised in present day Sudan, Somalia and Egypt. The lighter skinned Egyptians had a different kind of religion to that of their black southerly neighbours. Mount Sinai is a later attempt by God to bring a new people, the children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to Him. But it was certainly not the first. Traders from India, China and the Arab world may have mistaken the Shonas from Munhumutapa and the Lembas as Zionists. (You cannot rule out that the Lembas told them that). I also believe that the Senas did not learn Islam from Arab traders, but were themselves sojourners from the same area as the Nubians much earlier. If not then they could have travelled to Southern Africa at the same time as the Lembas. They were late comers. I also believe that the Shonas and the Lembas or Senas did not walk all the way from northern Africa or beyond, but they travelled by boat. They were also probably wearing cloth not skins.

Failing that you have to visit one of the chiefs in Chivhu, Chikomba, or Buhera. You will also find that there are different types of Zezurus. Alternatively, you can have online access to documents about Zezurus from different British, Portuguese libraries and Universities. I hope these few suggestions will help.

Just because Indians and other outsiders recorded the name Shona people that doesn’t mean the name originates from Indians. They only associated the name to gold because of trading maybe since Great Zimbabwe was known a Big trading post. But it doesn’t make sense for them to call Shona people “Gold” people. The word Shona has been a word used by its people for many many years. Yes, there might have been the wildest coincidence that the traders name for Gold is “Sona” and where they are getting the Gold from the people have a name similarly pronounced “Shona”. No relation whatsoever. Why would Indians/Arabs who took over almost all of Africa, concentrate on Zimbabwean people to name them “Gold “ people when there is gold everywhere in Africa?

@hazyeX3

This is fun because a literal white man made us use this term. The people living in the lands we now recognise as the country of Zimbabwe were divided into two major tribes as part of the efficient and apparently, effective colonial project. Hence you have kalanga people being absorbed into ndebele even though the other southern african offshoots of people who use this language have more in common with people who call themselves ''shona'' and the language than the ndebele e.g the kalanga in Botswana. Just like shona, the ndebele tribe was created to absorb everyone else in that region, the only rhyme and reason being: colonization. Nothing about how we identify now has anything to do with what existed then or even makes sense to anything outside of the white, capitalist, colonial and imperialist project of that time.. I'm sorry to tell you this but whatever alliances we have now are a mere colonial construct that allowed for a more efficient takeover. Notable mention to maize meal for Sadza because our indegenous grains are way too labour intensive and took away far too much valuable time that was otherwise required for the purposes of building the white man's wealth and what they believed would always be their continent back then :'D

Do you know that Dombo, the first known Changa-mire, had his kingdom extending to the land that was later named Bechuana (now Botswana). Interestingly, that name, now pronounced Tswana - today refers to the Sothos that occupy the western regions of Basotho. Within the land between Limpopo and Zambezi, the word Shona never referred to a people until Mzilikazi mistook the VaMhari people, that he clashed with in the south-eastern Zimbabwe, for the Chuanas. Until recently, it was common for Ndebeles to call Shona people Maswina and the Karanga people of the south-eastern lands calling the Ndebeles Madzviti.

It does NOT matter where you come from in Zimbabgwe because Zimbabgweans have big brains and only look to the future and do you know who is always looking into the past?. So the populations described did not define themselves as "Shona". It seems like it was a landed inhabited by heterogeneous groups. And groups constantly move and arrive in one place at different times. I have read many comments by karanga claiming the earliest people and initiators of stone building. Some scholars also claim the vendas or their ancestors as the builders of Mapungubwe. Are these tribes the true descendants of Leopard Skopje's peoples?
@itstadiwa284
@itstadiwa284 2 года назад
From my understanding, Karanga and Kalanga were once one tribe that was split during the fall of Mapungubwe (that word is known as Mhungubwe in karanga/shona btw). One group (which began to call itself Karanga) went to build Great Zimbabwe with Rusvingo (luswingo in venda and kalanga) as the capital i believe. Modern day Shonas (all tribes included), Kalangas, Vendas and Nambyas I believe all have a similar beginning. They came with an ancestor who led them Tovera in shona, Thobela in tjikalanga, Thovhele/Thovhela in Venda, he had a son Mambiri/Mambire (there is places named after him somewhere in Tanzania and Zimbabwe) and its people (who are a shona people too) are known as Vambire/Vambiri, there is also Vahungwe etc. Rozvi was Moyo totem of course which means heart it shona-kalanga or rather karanga-kalanga which gives a clearer view that the people were all related but scattered by building different kingdoms on the zimbabwe-southafrica-mozambique and botswana plates. and the settlement of other bantu groups would later influence them even more, creating further distinctions in the languages. E.g. Ndau people (a manyika people) were raided by Gaza Nguni people some ran and some intermarried with them, and as a result, they adopted some nguni words and clicks and surnames. But when speaking, Dhona groups will understand Ndau and not Nguni people because Ndau is still very much close to Manyika. Tovera/Thobela/Thovele descendants language similarities with spelling differences. Vendas says Thohoyandou and Shonas says Sororenzou Domboshaba in Kalanga is Domboshava in "shona" Tjangamire in Kalanga is Changamire in "shona" Because of this relationship, one can say that even though GZ and Mutapa were Karanga kingdoms the people living under the states would have been of different tribes such as Venda, Nambya, Karanga, Kalanga etc. as they are known today. Vhavenda in particular are a karanga/kalanga people with influence from sotho-tswana particularly Bapedi, that's why certain words sound familiar to a shona or kalanga person as well as sotho-tswana people.

No correction they where homogenous bantu speaking groups that ended forming the named groups zezuru, karanga, korekore, manyika to so called shona a word from indo Germanic Aryan agenda colonial regime.

Rubbish! No Bantu speaking group had anything to do with the construction of these ancient ruins. In fact these ruins predate the arrival of the Bantu. The Bantu found these ruins, as ruins. If the "Shona" were the builders? How come not a single Shona tribe lived in stone buildings? To this day not a single traditional "Shona" stone masonry tool has been discovered. Not even a hammer or a mallet of any kind. No protractor, no level, no chisel, no plumb blob. Nothing! As do the Bantu not possess any understanding of simple arithmetic, let alone mathematics. They didn't even have numeracy! We all know someone was responsible for the construction. As do we know who was not! And it was not any Bantu tribe.

Never heard of the Indian Ocean trade network?? The Mutapa empire was a source of gold for the Asian world, the Swahili and Somali were the middle men and through their port cities, Arabs Indians and even Chinese merchants came through. Artifacts from Asia have been found in the Great Zimbabwe ruins if you didn't know. And btw Indians are not Semitic they're Dravidian and Indo actually genetically and lingustically related to Europeans, Iranians etc) in the North.

Just because you are unaware of information or the information doesn't fit YOUR narrative doesn't make it propaganda. A simple google search would have answered your question. The ancestors of the Shona had a very long trading relationship with India which Arab historians say dates back as far as the 9th century AD. Seyouna, the name referenced in the video, was, in fact, the name of a town built on the Zambezi near modern-day Sofala. The Arabs called this area The Sofala of Gold. The Hindi word for gold is Sona. The eventual name used to reference the people there became variations of this...MaSona, MaSena, MaShona.
