I filmed a television commercial with him in Cape Town he is a polite, gentle giant with a mischievous glint in the eyes, just don’t put a rugby ball in front of him!
@@Blainelyne That's because Cowan had been holding Bakkies back in the chase to get the ball...Bakkies would probably have scored a try had it not been for Cowan holding him back...
Bull... In this video you can see him squaring up against Phil Vickery and Ryan Kankowski...he happily went after all opponents...just ask Jannie Du Plessis and Matt Stevens....
@@nasserkarriem1309 The reason why Bakkies is so famous for squashing 9s is that he was fast enough to catch them...doesn't mean he didn't dish it out to the big boys too.
Bakkies was one of the few players we as All Black fans feared. He was a monster of a man and deserved his Hard Man title. I'd also like to thank him for helping us win at least 2 games from his penalties 😂
As brutal as it is, this is one of the best highlight reels. The fact he smashed a few scrum halves (half back to you?) should earn him a small bit of forgiveness.
In Toulon, when the players passed in the audience before entering the stadium, we saw Bakkies at 100m! There was a crowd and this giant surpassed everyone by a head ... French Fan ✌
I'm american with Aussie and British family so I understand rugby. I played American football my whole life. After watching some of these highlights over the past few days of badass rugby players, I'm astonished at how tough these guys are. I said this on another video but I always used to say that you can't play american football without pads and helmets because it's a different type of game. If the rugby players used to wear pads...I'd say the same thing. The other thing I've always loved about these sports is that it's worldly. Not just americans. You get to see the baddest Frenchmen against the baddest "Saffers." A term I just learned. You get to see the All Blacks against the Aussies or the English against the Irish. All these people have all different types of big men and athletes and both.
You mean you play american soccer! Football is football... American Soccer is the Rugby for girls or those they want to be girly. Both are jokes - only rugby is the real sport 💁🏼♂️
Awesome "level headed" view of the two, (-assumig you follow the NFL) I have been a big Football fan since the Tomlinson, Urlacher and Shockey days (NO not NY era, still get goosebumps when watching highlights from his rookie season with them though, that dude was HARD) and I love your take on rugby being wordly. I have at times wondered how Linebackers would do if they HAD TO use their arms. Mind you, they can obviously "wrap 'em up" and #52's are known for crunching spears (Willis and Lewis for example) but football is such a fast game that I don't think they'd have enough time to position themselves accordingly, that's why these H2H calls in the past 2 seasons or so have been absolute downers. True say on the padding, some people play well into the "club level" without pads whereas Football teams enforce the gear from the jump.In Football's defense, blocking is a facet that adds so much extra "spice" to the argument, I'll have to give that to them a point or two for that ;). Sure, you can say the same about rucking which takes place after pretty much every tackle and front rowers can injure their necks while scrumming, not taking anything away from that side either, but if rugby had special teams play or legal blocking, sjoe xD, I donno if pads would still be an option lol. I hope I haven't said a lot of "nothing" here, just got really excited by the great comment you shared. This is what makes organised sports so dope, the mutual appreciation! It's great to see! lekka, Play ball!
@@tumelo4526 Great comment Mate! Appreciate what you're saying! Two different sports/games where it is really fun to speculate on how players would do switching it up and trying the other. There are always lots of Aussie punters coming over from "Aussie rules" football.
@@agnostic47 True say! Victor needed a Bakkies for sure! Bekker was alright but Russouw was a mountain! (shout out BOD#13) How about Shaw and Johnson? or are my wires crossed?
@@iamfromireland 10 seconds before that he was held back and interfered with to stop him for getting the ball... it was not noticed by the ref so Bakkies decided to give some pay back "You break the rules, I break your skull"
I appreciate the frustration and obviously it should have been a green penalty, but to do that is just overly dirty and brings the game into disrepute.
Coming from an AB supporter this guy was awesome to watch. All the hard man qualities you'd expect from a South African forward. Except for a stupid headbutt on Jimmy Cowen he wasn't a dirty player and definitely no thug - just the enforcer intimidator type that you expect at the highest level. He used to get penalized for tackling too hard and even got sent off one time for that as well which was utter nonsense.
Respect from New Zealand. Most guys that are rough and tough on the field are always the most nicest and humble men away ftom it. What happens on the field stays on the field!👏👍🏻
@995sean 2 tri-nations trophies, a world cup trophy, a British and Irish lions trophy, 3 Currie cups, 3 super rugby titles, a Vodacom cup title, a French top 14 title and 2 Heineken cup trophies
I'm a kiwi and watched that game (I watch every AB game lol) and it was so pathetic that we thought it was funny. The player he attempted the reverse head butt on was Jimmy Cowan and I don't think it had any effect on him. Botha was cited for it after the game and due to his 'disciplinary record' he was handed a 9 week suspension.
I always wanted to see Brad Thorn and Bakkies Botha go at it but it never did happen. That would have been a titanic clash! They were too busy clobbering other players!
@Casper 010 games moved on.. a relic of yesteryear. These days this short fused out of control loner with no regard for team discipline would only appeal to rock apes and would be coverted in zero trophies and simply banned.... but can't argue he was the enforcer and most teams had them
@@susannamarker2582 he's actually a pretty solid dude off the field. Slightly intimidating even if u don't know who he is bit cool guy still. Ur just bitter about the headbutt incident which is his only no no act besides the face shove which depending on who u ask is not that bad but that's a different debate entirely. He owns up to the headbutt and how bad it was to do it.
As a kiwi I liked bakkies Botha and Victor Mattfield very strong combo.. only good locks from recent memory from the AB’s for me was Brad Thorn and Chris Jack or maybe Ali Williams
A true legend! When this guy hit anyone they would stay down and stay quite and the only reason he retired is because they were starting to put HD cameras around the field !😂
@@Pcmn-oi3er Not true. As someone who's trained as a sprinter for years I can tell you it's a lot more specific and speed is DEFINITELY trainable. Genetics comes into play when you've trained just as hard and smart as other pros but need an edge. Anyone can squat heavy till they have tanks for legs, this doesn't mean you'll be fast. Speed is about being able to apply force to the ground (power) within a very short time frame (rate of impulse). Keyword being short time frame. Lifting heavy weights improves force production but decreases rate of impulse thus making you slower. Activities like reactive plyo and sprinting itself improve the rate of impulse, so you need a correct balance of both activities to become faster. There's also the extremely important aspect of biomechanics (are your muscles in balance to the point that your body is moving as efficiently as it can). Bakkies is faster than most guys his size because he trains properly.
@@susannamarker2582 someone's bitter that their team didn't win the world cup. Besides bakkies is a mischievous guy he would've wanted to take down guys with his own skill and laugh about it.
He's one of the dirtiest players I ever did see. He would have been better off in the amatuer era. I would have banned him on a regular basis. Its a shame because he was talented. Maybe he was a better man off the field as is the way usually in rugby .
I know that you But, the first enforcer? Pontypool Front row (only club front row to play for the Lions), The Moriarty family, Wade Dooley, Paul O'Connell, to name but a few that were harder & cleaner. Original enforcer, my ar5e
I heard he's a really nice guy but frankly, head-butting a fellow professional in the back of the skull is just reckless. I always thought he was very skillful but having played lower league rugby where you get smacked a lot more than he ever did, frankly I think he's a coward.
Who on earth chooses this bloody awful electronic crap to accompany such great footage? Please don’t ever use this person or non-music again. Thank you.🙉🙉🙉
dirtiest player in Union who set out to deliberately injure opposing players - He would drive into a ruck with his head hitting his opponents in the ribs time and time again.... he was never known for being a skilful player admired by his peers....
This channel is basically for South African that get bullied for supporting the springboks and then they can go here to watch the springbok prayers highlights
@1:57: head-butting the opposition because they scored a try. What a disgusting, dirty bastard...he should have been suspended. This is a shameful display within a game that most people acknowledge is generally played by decent people. I hope he has a life-changing injury which gets him OUT of the glorious game, and soon.
Umm...he head butted Cowan, because Cowan had been holding him back and preventing Bakkies from scoring a try...also Bakkies retired some years back....
