I believe metal means "mined" or something like it. We don't called rocks metal in the UK (anymore) but we still use the term "metalled road". Kinda cool that the colonies retain older uses for some words.
If it were me, I wouldn't fill it in, I'd just shore it in, add a ladder and make it a cool little ... something. Like a little basement. It's good underground storage.
That's a good point.. I haven't put much in it so I can do that it I want to. I've though about using it to store fuel containers. It's a problem here in the summer and would be nice to have somewhere nice and cool.
@@SubterraneanRalph Honestly, if it took more than a week to dig, it's worth keeping. If not, just throw some landfill or unmentionables in there. Could make a nice charcoal pit. But, err, I remember you mentioning it's kind of a far walk. What do you really have worth storing in a pit that keeps flooding far away from the house, yknow? Maybe you can just call it the pointless hole, and go there on your days off and ponder the meaning of the hole.
I wonder if there is a way you could setup a water catchment point at the bottom. Maybe using a concrete ring like turbo sitting on an outer circle of concrete. Then a layer 100-150 thick of drainage gravel to let the water in as the floor. Put a lid over the ring. A 300mm diameter shaft down the centre to lowered and raise a pump. Then backfill the rest with the new hole spoils.
I've thought about putting a concrete collar around the top bit and turning it into a well. Except it's bone dry in the summer; like everything else. I'd have to dog it down another 100feet probably..
@@daledigsdownunder I have no idea how deep it would need to be. It would need to be a bore rather than a well. Unless it would be a storage place to drain the run-off into and pump it out during summer.
Ground looks very stable. How long ago was the original hole? Maybe you could put a rainwater tank down there and get a solar pump. If its near any collection points or the stormwater runs
It's been at least 4 years. Good idea with the tank. Then I could let the water reach the top almost. There isn't any run off nearby because the house water goes into the tanks I could hook up the tank overflow though for the odd season that they overflow. every 3-4 years or so.
