When you hear the words “Universal Studio Tour” it probably conjures up visions of the shark from Jaws or the house from Psycho or King Kong. The tour has not only been a staple but the core anchor of Universal Studios Hollywood. Did you know that it wasn’t the first Universal Studios Tour though?

I love how your videos hone in on little details or things that most people wouldn't think to talk about.

4:57 ...”a novelty to it that has survived to this day.” Growing up in the Disney Decade, I can honestly say how magical it was to see these films being animated at MGM Studios. You felt like you participated in the film, even if uncredited. You essentially were watching history take place.

My favourite feature, Lilo & Stitch, was made there.

@@taffysaur love that movie... ...but I remember that year’s tour very well. You see, I wanted to grow up to be an animator and work for Disney. Many children probably share this dream. I even got to take a few animation classes at The Disney Institute, now Saratoga Springs. Well, before you are released into the wild to see animators create first hand, after you are shown a film of course, you are taken into a room where an animator draws about two different sketches. He sketched this adorable looking alien called Stitch. He tried to explain to us the story, and how Lilo liked Elvis. I found this part odd because I was barely an adult, and no one my age cared for his music, so why her? But the names of both characters also seemed strange. I looked forward to seeing it, even though I couldn’t understand it. The Internet wasn’t as big, so you really didn’t know about upcoming movies unless you visited the tour, or it was close enough to release that Disney was promoting it. Anyway, there’s a Q&A question at the end and it was revealed that when he was younger he always wanted to animate for Disney too. This is where I realized... ...it was Christmas Eve. ...At night. Instead of being at home with his family, he was there, drawing cartoons for tourists. Seeing the western animation industry basically dwindling (CGI was all the rage, and 2D was mostly big for animé) I remember telling my mother that I didn’t want to become an animator anymore. 🥺 I did later become one in a way, for a local company actually, 7 or so years later, right out of college. But I had always looked forward to tour part of the park, and the next time I visited, 2005, it was pretty much over with. No one animating. That guys job was gone, or possibly relocated, and the beginning video room was now being used by a fake animator, and an extremely annoying Mushu. I remember bringing my newly married husband to this, hyping up how cool it was... ...I felt so embarrassed.

The tour was a very different thing back in the 70's. It was more studio based, since at the time Universal Studios(Hollywood) was more of a production facility than today. I found it more fun to go, since one could recognize locations on the lot and props scattered about. Seen in whatever show they were producing on the lot. Plus the tour was a lot longer, with a great deal more focus on moviemaking. Today it comes across as a vehicle for marketing, which is a shame. But the film industry of that time was very different than today.

0:12 okay, it's been awhile since I've been to universal studios. How bad are the Fast & the Furious attractions?
@dcstone

Depends on what you enjoy, but the general consensus is not good. Lots of screens, not as many practical effects as the predecessor.
@PoseidonEntertainment

I have to admit, having been on the one in Florida quite a few times, it's reached the status of "so bad it's good". Not that an attraction should ever really be this way, but I can't help but find it a hilariously good time.

For a short while San Antonio, Texas made a lot of films until California was found to be more suitable. But, yeah! That was a good $$$ grab idea for the studio. George Tilou chared I think 10 cents to see the smoldering ruins of his amusement park in Coney Island. LOL! Ahhh! the things people to, to make a buck.
@UmmYeahOk

lol, remember when westerns were big, and actors had to train to sound “Texan?” ....couldn’t just, you know, film in Texas, and cast real people.
