Don't get too upset about those PS4 debug consoles being sold, they need to be online constantly in order to work, and you to do that you also need an account/license key. So they're giant paperweights without them.

Sounds similar to the way one gets access to Windows source code for driver development - essentially requires a machine with specially issued smart cards etc.

Yes, the kits wouldn't be able to be directly accessed, but you could likely take the drive out and read it with a pc, to see what was done on it, however I doubt you could get any usable code from one.

Sadly modern debug/dev consoles use limited lifespan activation keys that need to be renewed periodically, so if you get hold of one it'll turn into a brick when the key expires.

Any way to subvert that?
@BanditBro207
@BanditBro207 6 лет назад
You possibly could subvert that but you would need to find an exploit to flash a new custom bios and bypass other possible onboard authentication factors.

Who cares about modern consoles. There is nothing unique or exciting about them anymore. Basically they are the same shit inside a different looking case with a different name. XBOX, PS2 and earlier is were the excitement is at.

I remember around then in like 01-02 when i was like 8 my friends dad had one of those green xbox's, i thought it was cool and asked where he got it. He said it was used for making games and he showed me this zombie game he said he worked on at his job. He let us play it and I had a lot of fun with it, later i found out it was stubbs the zombie

Some of the first games I worked on were for the Xbox. Typically we led Dev on PS2 then ported across. I guess a lot of people will not realize the amount of development that studios put in their tools. A good toolset would let you port a game fairly painlessly; nothing like the cross platform engines of today of course. Now it's almost too easy to cross platform your game. Sadly means their not as efficient but we're dealing with much closer hardware these days.

As someone who when I was younger loved seeing behind the scenes of development and how it came together, and now aspiring to be a developer now. This video is awesome! I always knew about the kits but back then, it was one of those rare and legendary things, at least to a child. When one of your buddies was like “yeaup I got a modded Xbox console” or seeing and hearing about them through rumors. So seeing this breakdown of how it was done is awesome to child me AND current me :) thank you!

I use to work and run a website called Xlife and i posted news and reviews there. I whas the one that interviewed The Specialist as first in the world, he whas the guy that hacked the Xbox 360. I am so glad modern systems have the option to make screenshots, made my live so much easier when i do a review. Now these days i have my own website (after stepping up by a big comercial website with their own TV show in The Netherlands) called eigenwereld.nl (got mention a few times on Kotaku) where i do news about videogames, movies, music, graffiti, tv shows, nerd/geek stuff and afcourse retro gaming also posting your video's there :P
@ModernVintageGamer
@ModernVintageGamer 6 лет назад
thats awesome! yes i remember The Specialist, he hacked the dvd drives to play backups i believe . Thats going back many many years lol
@RDJ134
@RDJ134 6 лет назад
Yep, he hacked the DVD Drives, the OG Xbox had a similair firmware so after he hacked that the 360 whas his next project, but he never released it only proof of concept and how it worked, after that i think it whas C4Eva who made the hack available for the big masses. 2006/2007 if i remember right The Specialist whas a very nice guy and Dutch like me, we also did a follow up article. That whas my biggest scoop and pride of my whole career (if you can speak of a career), the second whas that a Dutch porn star whas refused on a call of duty release party, that article whent viral and on Kotaku where is whas viewed over 400k.

There was a trend about ten years ago to add the extra 64MB of RAM to the Xbox. It wasn't much use to commercial games obviously, but some emulators did take advantage of it (as I think you mentioned). It could be interesting to do an XDK mod on a spare Xbox though. I'm fairly sure the same QFP style SDRAM chips can still be bought cheaply on AliExpress etc., and not too hard to solder. I've never really done any "proper" game coding, only dabbled with some C# on the X360. I'm not a fan of C#. lol C / C++ still seems pretty much de-facto for this type of stuff. I could never quite understand the point of learning the new quirks of C# tbh. Although, I'm sure that the better C coders would find it easy enough. Looks like the OG Xbog XDK mainly used C, which is great. ;)

Yeah its a custom set up all you needed was another XBOX. Mine was softmodded with 128MB.

Learn Java and C# will start to make a shitload of sense to you. (That being said I prefer to either develop in C99/C++ or Java instead of this hybrid that C# is supposed to be.)
@noxabellus
@noxabellus 6 лет назад
No one who knows C would ever really make a game in C# would they? I mean C++ is awful to be sure, but the C# garbage collector is enough to murder your game on its own. Did they really allow Xbox games to be written on top of the CLR?

I'd say Microsoft could wipe the data on Xbox 360 dev kits and sell them to highest bidder for extra dough and less pollution from shredded electronics going into landfills. I mean, all they care about is money, so why not do that instead of tossing them into shredder and wasting money and polluting the Earth? That's counterintuitive. People are *eager* to buy those rare things!
@user10476
@user10476 6 лет назад
That would cost Microsoft a lot of money in the end. Too much work, too little profit.

user10476 How much money does it cost to sell something you're already in possession of?
@user10476
@user10476 6 лет назад
Siegfried Actually a lot. Someone needs to take their time to make everything happen, wipe the data, sell them in some way, receive the payment etc. In a big company like Microsoft it would cost far more than the few bucks they would get from the sell. And the more advanced they make it (auction or whatever), the more it will cost. 100% not worth it, for them.
@SuperSmashDolls
@SuperSmashDolls 6 лет назад
It's not a matter of just wiping the data off the devkit, though. Console manufacturers are *extremely protective* of their development tools, even Microsoft (which is unusual for the company). They couldn't care one bit if you found an old unreleased game on a devkit, but they would care a hell of a lot that you were able to write new games they weren't getting paid for. Furthermore, the GPU manufacturer they licensed trade-secret information from really would like to make sure devkits don't get into the hands of their competition either, since the development environment give you far more information about how GPUs work than public APIs (even Vulkan/DX12/Metal). The devkit itself is the trade secret Microsoft wants to protect and is obligated to protect.

I worked for a major games publisher in the LA area back in the day and we tested games using these green Xboxes. The video output was sent through a VTR to record the play and document bugs. These consoles were checked out to play testers at the beginning of a shift and checked back in and locked in a not-so-secure metal cabinet (like you'd find in any office) at the end of a shift.
