The part where Alva says "Jay's still with us, thank GOD" made me tear up on the inside. I was so close to meeting him too! The only 3 days I ever spent in Cali, went to the Z-flex shop and asked if Jay was there. They told me he was, just three days before, and he went back to Hawaii. I really wish I could have met him. Bless your soul brother. The art you lived and created is eternal!!!

After he passed I sent his wife or a girlfriend in Hawaii a skate magazine with a interview of Jay. She asked me where I got it. I told her I bought the mag in 76-78. She talked me into to sending it to her. I got her information from Instagram. I never should have sent that because she never even thanked me. That is all I wanted was a simple thanks. I believe possibly she may have had some issues of her own.🤙🤙🤙

at 56 years old I can say that the Dogtown crew were an integral part of my skating. I was overseas in 1976 looking at all the magazine pictures featured in the clips here .. I was molded by those into the skater I had become in my late 40's. I had the chance to watch and skate next to people like Shogo Kubo and Eddie Eulgero at a back then new skatepark in Cherry Hill New Jersey in the early 80's. Its hard to explain how much I was influenced by these innovators of the sport. It was not a sport before but I knew it would be. I stuck with skating for love of it and it paid in dividends. I still skate after 8 lbs. of metal in my front leg. But most of all my own story was made possible by the people featured in any documentary or article about the Z-boys. For that I will thank them all. Thanks so much guys for what I was given from pictures and articles in a magazine that made my life what it was and is. Go Big Or Go Home 😄

I found the Dog Town video in a video store not long after release just by chance. All I saw was a 70's look with a dude on a skateboard, and narrated by Sean Penn, I rented it and brought it home. When watching it I totally tripped because these were the guy's I had in posters on my walls in the late 70's, that I would take out of skate boarder mag, and I hadn't seen them in over 20 yrs. I'm 46 now, and was just a young skate boarding punk when that stuff was going on. My first roller skates had clay wheels, and what they talk about is no joke. When you hit a pebble you flew!

East coast 70' skate rat right here. Z boys felt like they were part of my life.....never met em....they were 3600 miles away.....still felt like brothers. They started a revolution out west....we continued it east. When I visited California many years later I did a self tour of Dogtown. Went to Carlsbad where the huge cement pipes were. I remember the urban legend that some skater did a full loop on one. Christ they got so high on those creeps that it seemed possible. Those dudes were rock stars .....aint no doubt!!!

Agreed...it's sad. Hopefully future generations can learn from it though. Because there's a lot of young people who still look up to Jay Adams and see some similarities of him within themselves. One thing I'm thankful for was having these guys to look up to know that thing I loved about skateboarding was the freedom to try stuff even it was stuff a few other people were doing, the guy who showed me air was blazing fast and that something I always tried to do was keep the speed and pace high for doing airs that makes things easier all you have to focus on is smoothness and your landings and keep the speed sonic so u can just flow right into the next move which really helps your creativity when you don't scrub speed you have a easier time thinking about doing radical things, rather than trying to recover lost momentum, having a giant 60 foot long 14 high and 20foot wide half pipe to play in 10 to 12 hours a day don't hurt either, thanks guys for showing me there is no limits, piece out,ah the seventys....I was there almost too young but I remember a little a front side to backside ally oop...when your ten years old how do you top that....Jesus Christ air hah ha....thanks....
