I stumbled onto this place by accident after falling asleep on the bus where that bus line ended. I had to exit the bus and wasn’t sure where I was but I smelled something good and saw this busy sandwich stop. Shortly after walking in, I wondered if I had died on the bus and went to heaven...roasted lamb sandwich.
My parents took me here when my sisters and I were kids visiting friends in LA. Now I do the same with my kids whenever we get a chance. A great place to go prior to a Dodger game or USC game.
Before Philippe's was at their current location the second floor of the building was a brothel, there was another brothel across the street in what is now Philippe's second parking lot, there were several brothels in this area which was known as Hells half acre. The crib district also was here. Bartolo Ballerino ran the majority of the cribs. Look up a book republished called the Los Angeles Sporting Guide from the 1890s. It's filled with maps of all the cribs and brothels that were available.
Still can’t believe I grew up with a Latino family next to Dodger stadium and never in those years visited Philippe’s. I guess we never thought outside of the “Mexican cuisine” box. The curious foodie in me will never forgive me for that. I’m 43 now and been there a good chunk of times. Boy, that mustard.. I even make copycat recipe at home. And he’s right… doble dip, even triple dip is the way to go. Bon Appetit!

Now I want one! Too bad I live an hour away! Another good one is the Pastrami at The Hat...double-dipped with Swiss....soooo good! They have several locations. I've been to the original in Alhambra and the newest one in Simi Valley. I also want to try the #19 at Langer's but DAMN, it's expensive!
I would like to sit down with those ladies & eat , the african american lady with short hair is gorgeous & has a beautiful smile & personality, no surprise she has on a wedding ring , a very blessed man/husband
It's an "old time" way to clean up spills, plus it adds a restful scent in the air. If I remember correctly, there was a Furniture Company next to them. It's also easy to see when the floors been cleaned, when they close they, sweep up and you can see that the floors clean, then before opening you throw down some Saw Dust ( actually they're "Chips" most coming from a Saw).
