I went to Paintsville HS with Tyler and he was a close friend. You could tell his talents were special back then. Always was, and from what I hear, he continues to be, a very humble guy!
I'm from the other end of the state, down by the Mississippi River. I'm so proud to hear Tyler and Sturgill on the air, and really happy to see something positive coming out of Kentucky.
@@icyscenic6783 Are you talking about Tony? Anthony Bradenburg? From Kentucky? He was indicted 2019 for drug dealing in Louisville KY ( Jefferson County)?? Just a question? Does he have a shaved head and a long goatee? 🤔
He is a Beast!! AWESOME!! Truly a Fresh/Original Voice! He & Billy Strings are bringing back the classic country sound along with Chris Stapleton, Of Course!! WOW!!
This guy is amazing, and watching this I learned he got sober in 2020. With tears in my eyes I can say I am approaching two weeks, and I have hope. This man is encouraging to me. Bless him.
Hey, don't quit trying. It took me multiple times over 10 - 15 years, but I say today, I'm finally over it. Very few people really make it on their first time, no matter what they say!
Wishing you the very best and much success with your sobriety. I was in that hell for 25 years give or take. Sober now for close to 13 years. Keep up the good work.
Tyler Childers is a God sent to country music. The way he loves Appalachia culture and history is in every song, just as his desire to push forward in creating something new and original. Meeting Sturgill set a bomb off for this scene. Tyler and Sturgill really saved Country music. I couldn’t applaud and praise them more!
I'm from the Ozarks. When I heard Run These Roads it hit me smack in the heart nerve. I know tons of guys exactly like the song describes. These hills, and poverty, create certain circumstances for young men and it can be so heartbreakingly bleak. While at the same time, I recall most people like that with respect and fondness. In general, it's refreshing to watch an artist grow and develop the way they want, instead of the way the studio directs. True art.
It's actually true for many rural areas. I was immediately taken back to my 20s in southern Iowa. I relate, pot and whiskey. Didn't know where I was going, just racing down the backroads.
I just saw Tyler last night at Railbird in Lexington, Kentucky. It was incredible the audience he drew in. Everyone there played well, including performers like Zach Bryan, Marcus Mumford, Wheezer, and many more. Tyler's performance was completely different than the rest. Nobody even came close to drawing a crowd like him. The atmosphere awaiting him was just different. You could feel everyone's anticipation for him throughout your entire body. There had to have been 15,000 people standing shoulder to shoulder just eager to hear the lyrical masterpiece about to come out of his mouth. When I say he did not disappoint, I mean it. Started off with Whitehouse Road, and basically ended with Lady May. This was the first concert me and the girl I will likely end up marrying attended together, and only the second time away from home together. Holding her and singing Lady May along with thousands of other people was a feeling the both of us will never forget. Tyler's music is unique in the best possible ways. Very few artists can match the passion he emits every time he picks up that guitar. He deserves every ounce of success he has gotten, and more.
I’m and immigrant and a NYC girl all my life. Yet I’ve always liked Appalachian sound. A sound that feels so originally American. And Tyler Childers has just infatuated me. Beautiful lyrics. Beautiful songs. I think he will definitely bring attention to this music from people that aren’t the typical listener
Interestingly, some of the sound is contributed to Irish folk songs, as a vast number of the people on early Appalachia were Irish immigrants. Listen to the music on some dubliners or wolf tones songs you can kinda see the similarity.
2019 was my senior year of Highschool, and being a troublemaker I had gotten grounded just before my parents left for the weekend. Low and behold my buddy comes and breaks me out and we headed to Orlando with $50 and hope for a good time. Stumbled across Tyler playing at some tiny venue, got $20 vip tickets and one hell of a story
I just saw Tyler on Saturday at Willie Nelson’s birthday concert in Hollywood. He brought the fucking house down with his voice. He’s a special talent.
I grew up in small town, Ohio, and with that, a lot of old country. Growing up I really loved it, but as a kid in the 2000s I really hated contemporary country music. after my grandpa died, all of the grandchildren started listening to some old country again because it was nostalgic. But then I was introduced to Tyler Childers, and it really opened up a whole new perspective. I deeply appreciate Tyler‘s ability to celebrate the joys of growing up in the middle of nowhere, while also recognizing the deep pain and traumas of those areas that tie to society at large. I love worship music, especially for someone who is not religious. His music is a breath of fresh air for me
Outstanding video! We are witnessing a legend in the making, I truly believe Tyler is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Just saw him at Two Step in Texas and although he didn’t play many of his most popular songs, TC and the Food Stamps rocked!
Aaron. Did you find Two Step Inn to be a crowd that was not as appreciative of Tyler as we are or was it just the crowd we got stuck in? I will difinaltely be seeking tickets to see him again at a different type of venue. Not a festival.
I actually hate pretty much all country, but I can't get enough of this guy. He's just so honest. Nose on the Grindstone is a fucking revelation. I wish more of country music was like this.
I know this compilation took many hours of concentrated hard work. What an amazing outcome!! Thank you so much for this thorough and heartfelt tribute to our beloved Tyler. You did a great job. I subscribed immediately.
I used to work at Willies locally known . Me and Tyler used to take shots together . We loved him at Willies . He was part of the place . Can’t wait to see him again now that he’s went big time . I live in Los Angeles now so I plan to see him when he comes here . Last year I was driving home in hollywood and I looked up and seen a huge billboard of Tyler on it and it made me cry . Buddy , you made it and I’m so proud of you ❤
Tyler Childers is true to traditions of Appalachia. I’ll be seeing him again in Johnson City, TN. I think it sold out in about 10 minutes. The hunger for honest and inspiring music is strong in the home of country music.
long violent history is one of those albums I like having on vinyl because it's such a good vibe to just put it on and listen in it's entirety. The final track really did take me by surprise when I was listening for the first time.
Man I first seen Tyler with John Prine in 2018. I’d never heard anything from him but when I did that night it was the single most moving event I had ever experienced. It probably saved my life, it unfortunately would be my last Prine show. And he was my go to every year and when I was struggling or lost I could always find a answer in one of John’s tunes. I can’t help but to feel that show came together by fate to build my faith. I wish you all the love in the world
This guy has never played a song I didn't like. He makes me feel every lyric and grove to every note. One of a small handful of artists that I can say this about. He will go down in history as one of the greatest country artists of all time.
My ex girlfriend listened to Tyler Childers. I distinctly can remember one time she was playing his music while she was getting ready so we could go out, I was in the living room playing video games. I honestly never really paid too much attention to it.. for some reason it just never caught my attention. I knew she liked him very much so I eventually went on to make a playlist with all the songs I could remember her playing and singing whenever we were together. Feathered Indians, Lady May and Way of the Tribune God were some of the songs she would always play and sing along too. I will admit after the breakup I found myself listening to the those same songs. It brought me comfort and the ability to reflect on all the times I could remember her singing, dancing and playing these songs aloud. I regret the inability I had to appreciate greatness for his music like she did while we were together. I feel like we didn't have too many things we were both passionate about and thats okay, But looking back now I definitely wish I could of shared this with her. I am grateful to you Saige, without you I would have never gotten to experience the greatness of his music. And I love you.. always will
So many people will come and go, leaving little tidbits in our lives. It’s a game of five and take, my friend m. Thanks, Saige, for spreading the light to this guy. May your life bring you so many little tidbits to cherish all your days, my friend ☮️💜
I freaking loved Tyler in the beginning. Not so much anymore. Something changed. In him and then in his music. I do not like his newest stuff and I really wanted to be a most loyal fan.
I discovered this guy a few years ago, like you said from the nose to the grindstone and I haven’t stopped listening to him ever since, I am totally addicted and listen to him every day. I cannot wait for more music from him, Creeker is my fav but love them all
Oh yeah. Creeker is a good one! My friends in college we’re listening to him and I was like who is this Tyler Childers dude?? But then I gave him a try and haven’t looked back since!
@@thewesternside on my Apple Music account last year he was my most listened to artist and Creeker was the No 1 song. I loved your video and insight to the man himself
I discovered Tyler through Colter Wall. Their duet of Fraulein is spectacular! My guitar playing has improved so much since listening to these guys! They’re super talented. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Loved Tyler when he first hit the scene, but the latest album is painfully overproduced and political. I miss the raw sound and songs about genuine life. He was relatable. I don't get that anymore.
I don’t know if this will ever reach Tyler but I want him to know just how much my sons and I love his music … I lost my oldest son Randy to veterans suicide Feb this year 2023 him and his little brother had bought tickets last year to see him at the Red mile Lexington Ky Randy passed before he had a chance to see him in concert Randy got me listening to him a few years ago … as Randy was goin through tuff times in his life he’d call his momma we would talk for hours at night every night sometimes we wouldn’t say a word just listen to his music …. The only thing now is I listen alone I miss my boy so much !!!! I wasn’t in any shape to go to his concert but hopefully some day I’ll be able to go … if this does reach Tyler just know you have a#1 fan in heaven and #1 fan on earth Randy’s momma !!!! Thank you Tyler for your music that me and my son enjoyed so much …as I still do….!
I’d love to see Tyler’s lineage. I’m Irish decent, via both Barbados and Ellis Island quick migration towards Appalachian chain. They ‘met in the middle’. I hear so much Celtic influence as that base undercurrent that grabs my Irish ☘️ heart ♥️
Just to add to the discussion on Tyler’s expressed interest in Christianity, his music also demonstrates a curiosity across religious doctrines. Universal sound appears to make references to Buddhist beliefs and practices whilst his most recent album also features Hindu inspirations. Can I take my hounds to heaven (jubilee) seems to be a direct quote from Mahabharata. It would be interesting if one day someone could ask Tyler about all this
This man’s music and voice hit hard. Amazing! Im so glad we live in a time that we find diamonds in little towns, all over the country. Diamonds that might not otherwise be found. ❤thank you for sharing your voice with us, Tyler.
I found Tyler Childers music by accident, just a few short months ago, through listening to Colter Wall. Colter's song "Fraulein" with Tyler Childers made me look him up after hearing his voice. I listened to Feathered Indians and kind of knew it from the radio, and started listening to the rest. I found the song "Coal" and it almost instantly hooked me. My family is from southern West Virginia, both of my grandfathers were career coalminers along with a lot of my family. I never got to live in Appalachia because my father joined the military to give his children a better life than he had, and I thank God for that every day. I do wish I got to experience living there full-time instead of just 1 or 2 weekends a month. The music he played sounded like the music I heard in the holler there and it really grabbed me. Music that reminds me so much of my childhood, my family history, and actually pays a little homage to the thankless career my family killed themselves doing to keep this country running? I was in. I dove in completely and listened to nothing BUT Tyler for about two months, specifically Purgatory, Live at Red Barn Radio, and Country Squire. He was coming to play a concert in my town a few weeks ago, and I had no idea who he was in time to get tickets for it. Then he released the "In Your Love" music video that caused some backlash, and I was able to get two tickets for presale price about 3 weeks before the concert from some unfortunate people that didn't want to go anymore (SCORE.) In my concert prep I started listening to "Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven" in order to know some of the songs he was touring for. I haven't been to church in years, and I lost a lot of my religion through my line of work. I don't consider myself atheist, but I don't have much of a belief anymore. That concert grabbed me by the throat when he began singing "Angel Band." I had my hands in the air and felt the Lord like I hadn't in years. There is NOBODY that sings the way this man does, and can project the spirit the way he does. All of his music has been burning a hole in my radio still, even after the concert. I've never enjoyed an artist the same way I've enjoyed Tyler's music and I can't wait to see him again. Something about it just makes my mountain blood run warm, and makes me feel so good. Thank you for the cool documentary, and sorry for my entire life story. Just wanted to share mine with how much his music has touched me.
Saw Tyler at the Greek Theatre on the UC Berkeley campus tonight. Incredible show. I can't get over how authentic and revelatory his voice comes across. He let his band COOK, rare to see an artist showcase his sidemen like that. He's a great guy with a huge heart and I could tell he's still a lil surprised at how loved he is.
I saw him in London in Feb this year and he was absolutely incredible - genuinely one of the most powerful artists I’ve ever come across and without a doubt absolutely lyrically genius.
Just so you know the Church he describes is Way of the Triune God isn't a traditional Baptist church but one we here in Appalachia call "Holy Rollers" a Holiness or Pentecostal Church these people do dance and sing in their services. Some even handle snakes and speak in tongues The women don't cut their hair and wear long modest dresses. They do believe in immersion baptism, the same as Baptists but the Baptist's are not unique in this belief.
Great lyrics. Grew up Catholic. Not religious anymore, but wow so these hit home. Grew up in a cornfield in rural Ohio small town north of Columbus. Live music in Myrtle Beach SC 2014 bar. Wife and I heard one of his songs covered on our honeymoon. Almost brought me to tears. Beautiful moment.
meh, had me in the first half. lost me at the "police brutality" narrative you pushed. we had a media and gov shoving a narrative issue, not a police issue. kinda weird how we dont have police brutality anymore and in many places, they are begging for police again after the defunded them. moral of the story, stop trying to add unnecessary "sympathy" to a story that doesn't need it.
I don't care if he is a ginger, he's one good-looking dude! I'm hoping he takes a page from Jason Isbell's book and does a little acting, too. He's had so many different looks I could see him playing everything from an old-west sheriff to a Highland Scot to a Viking. In the meantime, I'm perfectly happy to listen to him sing all day long.
I am from Monticello Kentucky where the sgt was killed I was raised swimming at mill spring and always walking down to the big cannon at the lake I never knew this till now and I know everyone of Tyler Childers songs to a T.
Great video Andrew, the first Tyler song I heard was Triune God. I loved that song and from there I have been backtracking listening to his older music, so thanks for the recommendations!
His music is so real and pure. having grown up in church and in a big family surrounded with bluegrass, gospel and old time country music, Tyler's music really speaks to my soul and restores my faith in music generally
Formerly from Bell Co. and they've ravished that area. Tyler actually played in Middlesboro at the old Park Theater when he was coming up thru the ranks.
I’ve been hearing about Tyler for a while from my Kentucky friends (I’m from Lexington but have been gone since 1979.) Heard Hallelujah Jubilee on a Philly radio station and loved it. It’s so great for an old gal like me to hear songs that are fresh but take me back to my Granny’s house in East Tennessee. Tyler, Jason Isbell and Billy Strings are grabbing a whole new generation and I’m here for it!!
Great job on this video! I don't listen to country music at all, but Nose on the Grindstone popped up in my amazon music playlist one day, and I was instantly hooked. Something about his voice just keeps me listening. He definitely has become one of my favorite artists.
i adore Tyler! His music gives me goosebumps, it is just so relatable for me, like it speaks to my soul. I am so happy for him for the place that he is in in life right now!
Who care if the other religions get pissed or other people get pissed? If they can't appreciate this man's music, something's wrong with them and I hope they do get pissed. They should be pissed, in fact I hope they see what they miss and his talent, he has spoken to or touched more people than any preacher I've ever knew of, one day they will really be pissed when they realize they missed out on so much, and when they try and can't get this man's music to hell with them, They will be super pissed so the only thing I can say is "Carry on Tyler" George Jones had his own style, so did Hank who told George as a child when he seen him in concert in Texas. He asked for pointers and Hank told him be original. Don't copy anyone just be yourself, I do believe that advise, will pay dividends!
Greenup County Kentucky I was raised up, jus a few ridges over from Tyler so I swell up in the chest with pride when I hear him and his underrated band. Childers writing, along with his unmistakable voice is one that’ll be listened to for generations.
Glad more country is coming from KY and Appalachian instead of the deep south honky tonk bar music. It cheers me up hearing coal mining mentioned in songs, its a dying breed people take for granted and must not be forgotten. Iv coaled mined almost 15 years. Definitely want our sons getting out of these small ghosts drug towns and something much better than coal mining.
Knockemstiff Ohio comin at ya live. Love country squire, tyler has yet to release a song I don’t love. Man’s got raw talent that’s been nothing but refined as the years go by.
Hi, what a nice documentary on Tyler Childers, I just subbed ya. I love all his songs, my son chose Lady May for his 1st dance w his bride last year. It’s hard to pick a favorite song, Feathered Indians, Follow You to Virgie & Nose to the grindstone are a few of mine. I hope to see his show this year!
Im sorry i love tyler more when it was just him and his acoustic when he was more vulnerable.. his new stuff has some good to decent tunes but id like too hear some more of his original style in some newer songs in the future.. just my opinion i love tyler childers and him and the steel drivers are my favorite country/bluegrass artists. Before all the fame and a band thats the version of tyler i like best too me it tells the story of his lyrics better when hes by himself but i do like the sound of him having a band as well.. one thing i love about tyler is how consistent he is live sounds just like his records. I wish tyler all the success and cant wait for some newer gospel, country, bluegrass music his lyrics too me are some of the best ive ever heard from any artist from any genre they hit deep and his music always puts me in a good mood..
Tyler has helped me through hard times & made my good times that much better. The raw emotion & passion he sings with makes me want to cry (sometimes I do) my favorite country artist by far
The rise and fall it should be called. The more mainstream you get the more you have to tow the line I guess. Still, no excuse to be a sellout to the woke crowd
You did an awesome job with this video and telling of the story. Thank you! I was a casual listener of Tyler for a few years until recently I really decided to dig in. Can I take my hounds to heaven is a phenomenal album front to back. I am trying to see him live this summer in Saratoga. Again, great video and thank you!
Presentation was amazing. Tyler's music was introduced to me after a co worker heard me singing for the first time. I was playing an original song. He asked if I'd be willing to watch Tylers video. I was blown away. Replayed that vinyl session recording and within an hour or two learn Whitehouse road. I went on researching everything I could find on him for at least a month.. follow you to Virgie is one of the song I want played at my funeral. I believed from the first song he'll be around for a very long time. Ain't got no right, but I'm proud as hell of that man. God Bless him and his!
I've been waiting for a youtuber to capitalize on the lack of video essays on Country artists. Glad you have come to carry the torch! I do have to suggest: please remove the music in the background. I understand the purpose but I would much rather have a small snippet and then have maybe just instrumental backing tracks within the same genre as the artist you cover. I heard this once about why country music just isn't good for backing movies and stories: "Country songs tell their own story. Playing country music behind another story just creates two ongoing stories and I can only focus on one." Absolute best of luck and DO NOT QUIT!
Thanks so much man! Thank you for the advice! Might help out with trying to avoid copyright too! Hahaha. Only getting better from here. Thanks again for watching
@@thewesternside Welcome, brother. Truly love your videos! I suggest doing a video on Evan Felker of the Turnpike Troubadours in the future. They're gearing up to release new music soon, their first after a long hiatus, and I think it would get a ton of buzz. Although, I am biased as an Evan Felker worshipper.
@@thomasportelle4690 I paid $170 / ticket. We waited online hours before tickets were released and didn’t get any, probably do to bots. We bought on the secondary market (9th row, center left) and got decent pricing. We could have resold for much more. At $170 he is definitely worth it. And Charley Crockett opened.
Tyler and I were friends in Johnson County I can remeber listening to him on the streets at our local Apple Festival his always been such a sweet good hearted boy
I was raised by my grandparents. My grandfather was a coal miner and an alcoholic. He was a great man. He was also in the army. He wasn’t my biological grandfather but he taught me a lot and raised my sister and I on a coal miner’s salary. He loved country music and would have loved Tyler. I’m a huge fan. My favourite song is lady may ❤
I'd be really interested to hear your takes on his newest song and the music video for it. I recently discovered Tyler's music because of it and I gotta say it changed my entire perspective on country music
