Danson (Dwayne Johnson) and Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) foolishly jump to their deaths during a criminal pursuit.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A desk-jockey detective and his tough-talking partner get their moment to shine in this buddy police comedy starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, and directed by Adam McKay (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby). New York City detective Allen Gamble (Ferrell) is more comfortable pushing pencils than busting bad guys. A meticulous forensic accountant, his numbers are never off. Detective Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg) is Gamble's reluctant partner. Try as Detective Hoitz might to get back on the streets, an embarrassing encounter with Derek Jeter has left a sizable black mark on his permanent record. Detectives Danson (Dwayne Johnson) and Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) are the complete opposites of Gamble and Hoitz: unwaveringly confident, they always get their man, and they do it with style to spare. I remember being in 8th grade and watching this on PPV one night and being shocked that they hid The Rock and Samuel Jackson from the marketing once they first show up in the beginning, then I remember thinking when they were falling that they were gonna jump cut to the both of them in full body casts laying up in a hospital. Them somehow actually surviving being the joke, but soon as there wasn't a Bush in sight, my jaw hit the floor. Great way to subvert expectations in comedy lol

I was one of the blessed that got to see this movie on release with a crowded theater. Hands down the funniest crowd moment I’ve been a part of. Laughing for almost 5 minutes after this scene, it was too good. The crowd definitely made it funnier. And watching it with good friends…still friends to this day

A few things that I love about this scene. 1. “you thinking what I’m thinking?” (Implying they’ve done this before/it’s a go to plan.) 2. The Rock points below and says “aim for the bushes” (we assume there are actual bushes) 3. “There Goes My Hero” playing until they landed (made me think that they were going to stick the landing unharmed even tho it was impossible. This will always be one of my favorite movies theater experiences. Saw it back in college. Theater was five minutes away from school. Went between classes on a weekday. The set up for this scene is so good. The day before these dudes walk away untouched after one of the most ridiculous police chase/wreck/shootout. It's the rock and Samuel L Jackson, they are action heros, they never die and the movie has you totally convinced that they will somehow live and the song and the shot of them jumping and falling is just comedy gold

That’s what makes the writing of this movie so hilarious. Here we have Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L Jackson. 2 blockbuster big name actors. The movie begins by making you think that these guys are gonna be the main characters. Then they get killed 10 minutes into the film and we realize that Will Ferrel and Mark Wahlberg are actually the main characters

It was a metaphor for soft landing, and in this case, the "soft landing" was the get-away vehicle. It would still have gone horribly wrong even if they did lang there though.

I used to work in a theater as a projectionists when this movie was playing. I would always watch the crowd from the projection booth, and there is always a huge roar of laughter at this moment. And whenever anyone brings up The Other Guys in conversation, this scene is always mentioned.

It blurred the line between fantasy and reality. On one hand, you got these two cops who just seem invincible. Getting into gunfights, cause million dollars of property damage, exalted by their colleagues as the two top dogs. They build them up and build them up to the point where they jump off the roof a 20 story tall building with such a ardent belief that they will survive that they get even you, the viewer to believe they will survive as well (using two of the highest paid actors in Hollywood only further convinces you of their survival.) Then, splat, a sudden shellshock of reality check make you feel incredibly foolish for thinking that the movie was above to delve that far into the realm of fantasy.
