As we continue to sail and explore the beauties of the Bahamas, we check out the "Other Pig Island". No Name Cay is home to about 2 dozen pigs and chickens. They are really cute and curious little creatures, especially when you bring them food ;)
Hope you enjoy this step
Cheers

I love how you film all the small things about your boat. The sound of the sails, watching water drip off of a window... it's very nice to see all the small things that I would see if I were actually there. Thank you.

Beautiful video!! That little 5hp Merc is one of the best motors I have ever come accross. I work on outboards all spring, summer, and into the fall. When buying parts, beleive it, the Chinese stuff on ebay is fine!! Tohatsu / Nissan made that motor for Mercury so the parts are easy to get and cheap, but not from Mercury. Make sure you grease the shift lever. They break and the powerhead has to come off to change it. When I'm out at the local islands and suspect water in my fuel I get a plastic water bottle and drain the fuel into it. Then let it sit for awhile to let the water separate. Pour the clean fuel back in. There is an access hole in the bottom cowl that allows access to the carburetor drain screw. Open the screw and let the fuel out. While still open pull the engine over a few times so the fuel pump can push clean fuel in and contaminated fuel can still drain out. When the engine is not running CLOSE THE TANK VENT. This will help keep moisture out of your fuel. Any questions on these motors I will be glad to answer.

Hey Dan, if your outboard issue isn`t solved by now: assuming that your carburetor is clean AND the float needle valve is positioned correctly: 1) when motor runs at idle spray some gasoline on the connection hose/pipe between carburetor and cylinder head. If it revs up - you got an air leakage there. (easy test without dismounting anything) 2) If motor runs ok for a while and then starts running bad - screw off the filler cap of the fuel tank. If you hear a "schhh" the air intake valve in the cap is clogged and you build a growing negative pressure by using fuel. (mean mistake - but happens sometimes ;-)) I hope this will help :-)

There are swimming pigs off Spanish Wells, Eleuthera as well. Basically, anywhere that there is a cay, and pigs are dropped off, when they can no longer get food, they try to swim off to the nearest cay\island, and that is how they learn to swim. When people begin to come to that spot to feed them they no longer have a reason to leave. Pigs are smart!

I had a sneaky problem several years that could explain your outboard issue. The pick up tube in the tank was lose where it connects to the fitting on the top of the tank. It was glued to the fitting, and I presumed ethanol had its way with the glue. I use ethanol-free fuel, but I suspect I got some in the tank somewhere along the way. It was an easy fix. I used a small hose clamp, tightened it around the top of the pick up tube where it connects to the fitting, and problem solved. I was still using the tank, with that repair in place, several years later when I sold the boat.

Lots of comments about gas, but could be an air leak on the inlet side that opens/moves as the engine warms up. Check all mountings for cracks and if necessary strip and change gaskets - you can make your own, and check nuts/bolts and so on. If not, plug lead as well as plug. Another problem on small 2 stroke machinery is a blocked spark arrester in the exhaust. On newer engines this may simply be a metal gauze that requires cleaning... Great and compelling videos as usual, and I love it when you tie up with other boats and bloggers - it's just so in the spirit of sailing, well done.
@JustMe-pp1mp

Dan - do you use ethanol free gas for the outboard? If you think it's water in the fuel, which I don't think you'll ever avoid, I suggest an additive (as well as ethanol free if you can get it) for the fuel. In Canada I use Seafoam which should be available in FLA (if u ever return) and maybe in the Bahamas. Told Beau you'd help him 'wind proof' his boat (hee hee). In any event take care and keep on having fun :-)

Dan, with the out board, something you may want to try is first pulling out the gas tank and fuel lines and inspecting for cleanliness, sometimes varnish can form in either from previous abuse. Then varnish especially with fuel containing ethanol can dis-large fragments that will interfere with the carb porting passages. Another is the ethanol fuel breaking down the interior of the old rubber fuel lines, again messing up the carb. And yet another is making sure the fuel lines are sealed tight and crack free. Some times and engine will run fine at idle but then has issues when throttle is applied do to the induction of extra air from the bad line. Finally, the only thing that may works is to order a brand new carb, it shouldn't be that expensive. I ordered one for my little Suzuki for, I think, $50. Fair winds.
@nealbirch9462
@nealbirch9462 5 лет назад
I am going to second the idea of checking/replacing the hoses, just a small air leak that only occurs when the hose is flexed or vibrating will do you in. Just because it doesn't leak fuel, it may still pull air in somehow. My 1975 Sportster would cut out when running, no leaks sitting or running, old biker told me to replace the hose and clamps, when I finally listened to him ("It's not leaking!") and did it, it finally behaved. I asked him how he knew what it was, he shrugged and said "Well, you did everything else."

Dan, I bought a funnel/filter off eBay called Mr. Fuel. It has a super fine mess that believe it or not allows gas and diesel threw but does not allow water threw not even the smallest amount. I bought one when fueling my Egg Harbor and used it every single time I fueled even if people said it was a safe fuel location I would find small amounts of water in their fuel, the eliminated it completely! BTW....your behamian snapper looked delicious!!!
@C_R_O_M________
@C_R_O_M________ 5 лет назад
spinnaker5514 I have a couple of Mr. Funnel sizes for traveling around when I don’t know the quality of gas/diesel they sell. I use them like this: I test a small portion of the fuel and then, if everything checks fine, I fill up without it. To fill up with a Mr. Funnel doing filtration the whole time takes a long time (even with the largest sized ones - with double filters).

Regarding the outboard, 5 refuels in 3 years? Storing fuel on the boat? Without the right additive it just can't be done in that environment. Doesn't matter what your outboard is. Seafoam, Stabile, Heet, or even a smaller fuel jug. One that doesn't sit long enough to go bad. For what It's worth you have some options.

That was some great editing , lovely film, great content , sound and images. How you do that on a yacht I can’t imagine. I have an earlier version of one of those 3.5np Mercury OB , I can’t keep it running, the carb clogs easily , It’s really hard to start . The base engine is the universal 1cyl 2-stroke used by many different manufacturers but the fuel system just does not work well..... unless yours is the four stroke??? A Yamaha or touhatsu are the best small 2 strokes , hands down, Cheers Warren

@z_actual

an engine that wont start in 3 pulls has a problem first thing check the spark, you are looking for strong spark which is blue/white, change the plug anyway second the fuel. If its premix 2 stroke be aware it loses octane over time. 25:1 2 weeks, 100:1 much slower check for water as Mike details below, safest thing is to ditch the fuel and replace it next thing run a kit through the carby, new seals, new needle and seat usually you have to set the mixture for air fuel ratio, identify the mixture screw you need to find out the average set for the mixture screw, usually screw in all the way 'lightly' so as not to damage the seat then screw out a turn and a half lastly, pigs carry rabies, you get bit get a shot, u dont want to have rabies ... thats all I got have a good one

Small amount of pure ethanol into gas tank binds water and it exits with exhaust gas. Was used for decades in colder climates where water condensation (and freezing) in tank was a common problem. However, nowadays here it's hard to get gas without already some ethanol in it.

You need to see what fuel additives are available there, some will practically make water burn. I would also check the compression. A blown head gasket or worn rings can make an outboard do crazy things. I had one that would run fine when cold and stop after it got hot.
@jackpatteeuw9244
@jackpatteeuw9244 5 лет назад
If that engine is a 2 stroke, does it have a diaphragm carburetor or a float ? Diaphragm carburetors are very touch with any kind of vacuum leak. Unless the fuel line looks perfect, replace it. Dump all of the fuel out of the tank and use a flashlight to see it there is any debris in the tank. If it starts and/or runs better with the choke partially on, you have something partially blocking the idle (primary) jet. These are typically not removable. Take a single bristle from a wire brush and probe all passages before reassembly. If you have had that carburetor apart a few times, maybe the gaskets are not sealing good enough.

Hey not sure if you fixed your outboard, make sure you are not drawing a vacume in the fuel tank. Had that happen to me, chased it for days found out that the vent was plugged and the tank would build a vacuum and not let fuel out after running for a while.
