A century after completion there are celebrations of the opening of the tunnel in 1923 by the local Schoolchildren with instillation of paintings in the passageway under the tracks at Otira .
The items are from 3news Newshub 29/7/2023 and TVNZ's 7Sharp 1/8/2023 .

Great Video, in reference to the "electrification" comment below I think the CHCH to Greymouth line should be the next line for electric loco's but only once Auckland to Wellington is fully electrified, after that they should look at Hamilton to Tauranga, thanks for sharing

I ha a friend that was down there learning to drive the electrics so he could go to Wellington for the passenger units just before the power was removed . And it was NZR's training area also .

@@davidlipscombe916 I was born in Hokitika in the late 1940s and we regularly took the train (or railcar) to Christchurch to stay with family during school holidays. My mother took our own food, only buying herself a cup of tea at Stillwater, Ōtara and Springfield. She usually set jelly in a jam jar and we always insisted we eat our jelly I. The Ōtara tunnel. It became a ritual.
