Memorable score and another classic episode not needing a monster. The first season for me .growing up in the 1960's, ( I am 65 now) I saw a lot of great classic t v shows but I got to go with the first season. The best of times if you lived growing up loving this show.

From one coming up on 63, scared the bejesus out of me...but would always make you think...later with our special new color TV, Star Trek would make you think more, deeper. Yes, a rich, deep childhood....I wonder how my 22 yr old son will recall his childhood. at our age...hopefully it will be good, hope I did it right for him.

@@AndieBlack13 star trek was o k but , the outer limits was in a class by itself. Limits made us look at ourselves, trek was space adventure, something which was done so much in 1950s science fiction movies.

@@randyacuna3248 Yes, I will admit upon further reflection, Outer Limits was more "cerebral" ...while Star Trek tended towards the action packed theme with a thought provoking ending, as in " Arena". Really two distinct approaches. The music of the two was no-contest, Dominic Frontiere prevailed with new scores virtually everywhere & Star Trek reused their music over & over.

Of all the episodes on O.L. this is a true blue one. The beginning where the space craft enters and the city at night showing people walking gives a great mood for Dominic Frontier's music. Lovely Dom Frontiere score based around harp and electric guitar.
@MONGOOSE1ful

Dominic Frontiere wasn't your average or routine film & TV musician- in addition to working with Quinn Martin' s first TV series, "THE NEW BREED" in Fall 1961, his relationship with Leslie Stevens and his Daystar Productions company officially started with "STONEY BURKE" for ABC's Fall 1962 season, and when "THE OUTER LIMITS" TV pilot "PLEASE STAND BY" was being filmed in late 1962, Dominic Frontiere was already hard at work creating his eerie scores for the 1963 ABC series. In one of the soundtracks was an exceptional and eerie score using a harp with exceptional and expert precision, and, while Daystar Productions finished "THE OUTER LIMITS" on ABC in early 1965 (where it was replaced by "THE KING FAMILY" variety show) Leslie Stevens and his production company was filming "INCUBUS" (1966) which he also directed, their last production which used the Dominic Frontiere scores from "Controlled Experiment" as the opening theme of this somewhat unique abstract horror picture in which all the dialogue was spoken in Esperanto. Frontiere was also a production associate/associate producer for "THE OUTER LIMITS", a first for a noted film & TV musician, and a member of the Daystar Productions staff. ABC liked Dominic Frontiere's music so much, that the original scores were also used in both "THE FUGITIVE" and "THE RAT PATROL" series, which United Artists also co-produced. again, not many musicians in this business had this kind of superior quality and background that Frontiere had during his impressive reign in the industry!

I have to agree with you there, Nanoforge1. - Some of the series' sweetest and nostalgic music. Some of it unique to the episode, and other cues were re-used in subsequent episodes. But Frontiere got some good mileage out of his overall portfolio of compositions for the series, and did it so masterfully without being predictably rendundant or repetitious. I think he did stuff with harps virtually no one had yet dreamt of in 1963.

Twilight Zone had Bernard Herrmann, who for a long time I have considered to be my favorite film/TV composer. Outer Limits had Dominic Frontiere, who must have studied under Herrmann or was hugely influenced by him, since Herrmann also liked to use the harp for a lot of his scores, and is almost as good as Herrmann, amazingly enough! But what's interesting is, Herrmann said of his score for Psycho (which interestingly enough was scripted by Joseph Stephano, writer/producer of The Outer Limits) that it was a Black & White score, he used only strings. In this score by Frontiere, he seems to almost do that same thing, in restricting it JUST to harps (except for the intro and some more stuff near the beginning), which is also a string-instrument. Whereas Herrmann used only violins, violas, cellos, and double basses for Psycho, in this score, Frontiere seems to finally settle on only using the harp, with marvelous results!

Another La La Land Records Dominic Frontiere boxed set is way overdue. Like the last one, it would be from his circa 1958-62 TV music library, much of which Elizalde pulled from to score Stoney Burke-and none of which was ever issued, except what's heard in the DVD set. I have the cue list and think I know the sources for making the boxed set happen. Let's do it in 2021!

Indeed - so true! Series creator and executive producer Leslie Stevens had to pull this lil' rabbit out of his hat to appease the ABC TV Network Management brass who were incessantly clamoring about this series overrunning production budgets. Many find the repetitive rewind/replays to be fairly irritating. I find the comic repartee between Morse and O'Connor to be quite entertaining. I give Stevens somewhat high marks for conjuring up a low-cost comedic sci-fi episode to appease the Network Brass. Net result - a lil' variety in this anthology, good comic relief, and agreed, a Great OL score.

Nit-picking. "The Premontion" (btw,MY FAVORITE EPISODE) does have a "bear". Doesn't the Limbo Being qualify???
@beargunn7820
@beargunn7820 6 лет назад
I fully agree, Ronald. The Limbo Being surely does qualify as a Bear. The proof of that, in my mind, is that he gave me a good scare the first time I watched it at around age 9. And get a load of the expression on test pilot Jim Darcy's face when he sees him... eyes open wider, mouth drops open... scared enough to leave a roadside flare burning in the hallway to ward him off. Yep, if it looks like a Bear and walks like a Bear, it's probably a Bear. :-) Hey, a guy named Bear Gunn should know a thing or two about Bears, right? I also call into question some of blogger PRINCEONE's other choices of "Bearless" episodes as well: "The Brain of Colonel Barham", the brain itself qualifies arguably as a Bear; "Cry of Silence" has menacing attacking tumbleweeds, boulders and frogs - "thousands of mad frogs!" . And "Production and Decay of Strange Particles" has the plainly visible and menacing atomic energy beings that form inside the radiation suits of the energy plant workers after they die from touching the new and dangerous radioisotope. Them be Bears, folks! Some of his claims were correct, but a good bit of it was nit-picking, too. I also agree with you that it is indeed a lighthearted Comedy. Barry Morse's gustatory reactions to coffee and cigarettes is a real hoot, not to mention his fastidious manner altogether. And Carroll O'Connor's dry wit and familiarity with Earth played well off of Morse's more uptight persona. Good comedy there. And you were right; this episode was the only one done for laughs. Your critics were nit-pickers. Take it from a lifelong fan and devotee of The Outer Limits. - Bear

Can someone help me out with a musical question? At the 5:45 mark in this piece a harp run occurs. I don't think it's a glissando. It seems to be a diminished run. I am trying to understand it but it moves too fast. Can someone explain it to me? In a slow 4 count are these notes 32nd notes? Is it a run of 4 notes that gets repeated at each octave or is it a complete scale? For instance, using C as a reference note, is this line someting like a C-Eb-F#-A repeated in each octave or is more like a C-D-Eb-F-F#-G#-A-B-C that gets repeated in each octave? Thank you.
