Vicarious Analysis (The First Part) • Maynard James Keenan V...
Maynard never ceases to amaze as he summons so many different characters within a single melody. He's channeling both sides as his humming turns into disturbing and inspiring screams.
Few songs demonstrate his diversity as well as A Perfect Circle's "The Outsider". Join me for an in-depth look and listen to the isolated vocal tracks. We'll talk singing, screaming and production.
AND... A huge bonus... I've added the 'missing' ending for the isolated vocal analysis on Tool's Vicarious to this video as well. ...So we can all get a sense of resolution by experiencing that climatic moment!

What blows my mind about Maynard's vocal delivery is how deliberate and intentional it is. It's so forward and it's like he creates an illustration of the word or phrases that he's singing, as he's singing it. It's so creative and I love it

In this particular case at 10:15 or so, the example lyric used is “I’m over this”. So when you hear “hmmmmoverthis” I don’t think it is correct to say he is humming to lead into “over” smoothly. It would be more apt to say he is skipping enunciating the “I” preceding the “mmm”. In that breathy method, trying to enunciate the “I” would probably result in sounding like he is saying “Hi”

Cool thing about the hum also is that it doesn’t seem random in its placement - if you listen close, nine times out of ten it’s right on rhythm, like he’s adding a vocal beat that the lyrics wouldn’t necessarily cover. Good tool (HAH) for anyone who may have trouble with lyric placement.

This is going to seem disrespectful to this channel but it's truly not meant to be. The thing I find most interesting is how natural and pure his vocals are and that we can all probably assume with reasonable accuracy that Maynard isn't even remotely thinking about any of this technical stuff when he's singing. I've always been fascinated that there are monster guitar players with technical chops out the bunghole who can show you how to emulate David Gilmour yet still never come close. Tone... it's in the fingers and the breath. Passion... invisible and as unique as a fingerprint. Great videos as always, bud. Love these breakdowns so goddamn much.
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 4 месяца назад
You're so right... He's not thinking about any of it... He may have thought about different techniques at some point or maybe just stumbled into all of it, but it's impossible to think about good technique a lot and at the same time, deliver great vocals. I have a video coming out about this soon :) !! Technique is important, especially for those of us who don't naturally stumble upon cool things with our voices, but it's not as important as abandonment, freedom, non-judgement and being comfortable with who you are and how you express yourselves. This is ultimately why we love Maynard so much!

i bought this album when it came out, and this song specifically played a HUGE part in my vocal development. so cool to see you analyze it. i think as a vocalist, feel is extremely important and those breaths and hums are a huge part of finding his pocket. maynard is top tier in knowing when to articulate "hard" (almost staccato like) and when to slide into his phrases. also ,specifcally with the last doubled phrase, its not only louder but it sounds like the doubled vocal has way more effect and eq on it than the main. kind of sounds a little phasey. love your channel Chris, your vocal course was a huge part in the progress of my band Va Va Voom. keep up the brilliant content. hope to work together someday!

Yeah he did the ending exclusively in 2006 and event then most of the time he took some of them down an octave to preserve his voice. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IymtIE0Kbvg.html Is probably the the best live version where does it and it's pretty damn close and he's got a whole set to do a very different scenario from working on these vocals for one song for a long time in a studio so it will always sound different unless Maynard went up on stage a sang vicarious and that was it.

24:22 sounds to me like you're doing fry scream while Maynard is doing false cord, and he sounds more like he has a note than you do. Nothing wrong with fry scream, but i just think this is clearly not what's going on (and what's suited for this sound) here. It seems to be what you're doing at 24:52, but on a higher note (kind of belting), that's it. Just my 2 cents
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 3 года назад
I strongly dislike those terms. I think most people have them backwards. Neither of us are doing a fry scream. And all screams use the false cords! All compression uses the false cords as well! Check out the courses I've done with Periphery's Spencer Sotelo and Veil of Maya's Lukas Magyar. We've got lots of discussion regarding these very terms and topics!

@@chrisliepe Alright ! By "fry scream" i mean what you do when your voice breaks up. As opposed to the other kind of screaming (which is much rougher and energy consuming).
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 3 года назад
@@djabthrash As I'm hearing it... We're both doing heavily distorted pitch screaming... Or extreme singing with distortion. There's a note in my scream just like his. Which means it's NOT a "fry-based scream" Since there is primary cord engagement in both examples. Both time stamps are the same stuff, just in different proportions. How much airflow is being moderated by the false cord area? What is the amount and quality of the cord closure. It's less about making a classification and observing the balances. It's amazing how many people I get that say: Hey that's a fry scream!! or Hey that's a false cord scream... and it's like this running argument to be right in the classification. Listen to Chester Bennington - Given Up... The epic scream... then go look for arguments on what kind of scream it is. You isolate that scream and listen carefully to any of chester's screaming... There is a NOTE in every one. So it's NOT what it typically classified as a fry scream. It's extreme singing with LOTS of false cord engagement. People write it off as a fry scream and don't get anywhere near the intensity or engagement in it and wonder what they are doing wrong. It's all about, in my opinion, steering clear of those classifications and experiencing the balances in your OWN VOICE and seeing what comes out. Who cares if it's a little different than the artist you're drawing inspiration from. It'll unlock lots of possibilities in your own voice along the way!
