The Overland was an overnight sleeper train between the capital cities of Melbourne and Adelaide . It was changed to a twice weekly daylight service and was cancelled on the 24th of March 2020 due to the Covid-19 virus , its future remains uncertain

When I was young we went everywhere by train. These red and silver cars were just starting to appear. It was a novelty then to have an airconditioned carriage. On the second division overland it was only the old E cars. But you could have the window down and enjoy the smells and the sights as you went through the night. A quick bite at Murray bridge on the way out or at Ballarat on the way home. How times change.

Great video with X-52 & S303 in the venerable VR colours & the thunder clouds in the background and a timely reminder that originally the N's did through running on the Overland to SA & back. FYI....it's Virus not Viris (in the titles)...!

Once again, fantastic footage from when the Overland was a real train and not the mini twice weekly thing it is these days.

Ahhh, when you could sleep, relax in the club and dinning carriages and bring your car along. It was much BETTER then!!

Yes as some here say, back in the good old days when trains were trains and government owned. I worked on the original Overland regularly, and although some of today's"enthusiasts" will not agree, (matter for them), the Overland in this great video was way better than the ugly coloured privately run wankfest of a train they have today, with the greatest respect. One of the biggest mistakes ever was privatising all the old interstate trains and almost giving them away to self interest groups, or to companies only interested in making money. New South Wales has the right idea, they still own many of their historical rolling stock and locos and have a say in how they can be used.

Back when it was a proper train. It may run again as the Vics have again extended funding until June 30, that’s if the travel ban ends by then

@@johnphillips592 ,i was on the train in 1989. my memories were of a sub-standard air filtration system (back when you could smoke on trains) and with a great range of any beer you wanted as long as it was a not very cold fosters light. there seems to be a genuine need for a service for country people who would prefer to avoid the need to overtake high productivity freight vehicles (road trains). how about a bloody fast train-faster than a v/locity.

@@vsvnrg3263 something like america's acela or the european eurostar is what's needed here if you don't want to see people who don't live in smaller towns defect to qantas or virgin.

You hit the nail right on the head Rhys, "when it was a proper train". It should have never been sold off, in fact some of the carriages were basically donated to groups who have their own hidden agendas, which has come to light recently, but I won't go into that here. The "current" Overland looks like primary school kids painted it and did the silly looking signs on the sides of the carriages.

Hey John, just in the last few days, the overland has been extended for another 3 years, it’ll resume once the borders between SA and VIC are back to normal, apparently all the funding came from the Victorian government?

Don't know the name , we used it years ago for a movie on Mt Buffalo , was hit with a copyright breach last year with it , I challenged it and won as I had paid for it to be used but decided to not use it anymore .
