Idk if anyone else noticed this, but if you watch this video closely, you’ll notice a very subtle and clever Easter egg referencing the “Pac Man” series of video games. You see, throughout the video Jonii makes plenty of references to the yellow circular arcade game character “Pac Man”. This “Pac Man” character also has a minor role in the “Pac Man” series of video games as the main protagonist. Really cool to see creators put in the effort to hide in these epic Easter eggs!
Oh wow that was fast! You have a keen eye Greg, I didn't expect anyone to catch that subtle nod. Really blink-and-you'll-miss-it type stuff. :P or BLINKY and you miss it haha
Ok but an RPG using classic Namco characters would be cool as hell, imagine your party being Pac-Man, Mappy, Dig Dug, and Gil. The enemies could be ripped directly from those games and it could be a classic "worlds collide" plotline
14:34 Pac-Man World 2 is notoriously easier in the Japanese version, having the pits in Canyon Chaos be filled in as an example. If I had to guess, the hunter ghost was replaced with a normal ghost to make the game easier as well.
Otoboke actually translates into feigned ignorance. Clyde/Sue isn't stupid in the original. They just want you to think they're stupid. A shame everyone went out of their way to ignore that bit of nuance.
I was wondering how many people in my audience would actually enjoy an iceberg video, but I figured if I gave it the usual Jonii flair, it would go over just fine. Happy to hear you liked it! :D
33:21 - As a Sonic fan I am obligated to point out the Sonic Adventure (1998-1999) Coin Operated Arcade Machine located in the background. It isn't super rare (there's one in the bowling alley at my home town), but it is rather old. Amazing video btw, you've got yourself a new subscriber.
36:38 It might have been given the name Cannibal Dash, because the ghosts that are chasing Pac-Man are dressed up in stereotypical 'tribal' costumes, and since it is a (very sad to see) common trope to paint real former tribal cultures as soulless cannibalistic monsters, it might be the main reason why this mini game is named Cannibal Dash! Side note, this was such a EXCELLENT iceberg video!!! The jokes and editing was flawless and I really enjoyed learning a handful of Pac-Man facts that I genuinely did not know! I'd love to see you maybe address other Namco icebergs in the future, such as a Dig Dug/Mr. Driller iceberg, or a ShiftyLook iceburg! (ShiftyLook might be a bit hard to research though, as a lot of their stuff has been genuinely lost minus some archived comics like the Dig Dug, Katamari, and Sky Kid comic, and of course the Mappy webtoon)
Oh I hadn't even considered that but I think you're right! That's unfortunate but I understand how they derived it. Thanks so much for the kind words! I don't plan to make icebergs a regular channel fixture but I do want to talk more about some other oldschool Namco arcade titles and I'm not opposed to an iceberg for one of them if it's interesting enough. Just looked up ShiftyLook and, while I don't know if I'll do an *iceberg* type video on it, I think I'm gonna keep it in my back pocket because it sounds super interesting.
@@joniivee I just subbed after seeing your Ms. Pac-Man video now, and dude I’d LOVE to see more Namco content!! 💕 If you do want to research more on ShiftyLook content, I’d recommend using tumblr as I know some files of the formerly lost comics have been saved there, and the Mappy webtoon has been archived on RU-vid as well. The canned Time Crisis comic is GENUINELY lost, and it may or may not exist (as some old online interviews said it was in production but was lost after ShiftyLook was shut down) so it’s definitely a mess in terms of learning about the weird yet cool stuff the Shiftylook team has made. 😵💫🤣 I also forgot to mention that the Bravoman webtoon has been archived on here too and exists alongside the Mappy webtoon (and is the reason why the Mappy series has VERY cheap animation) and there’s also a old Bravoman app game and the infamous Namco High dating game as well!
Oh interesting! I actually knew about the webtoon and have thought about discussing it int he future but I didn't know it was part of a whole initiative. That Namco dating sim also sounds like a rabbithole I'd love to go down. I'll be sure to keep Tumblr in mind and we'll see what form any of these ideas take. Fair warning though, whenever I decide to make a video on something, it takes a million years to actually come out, so be prepared for a long wait xD Thank you very much for subscribing by the way! I hope you enjoy my other content as well.
I find it kind of neat and amusing how Jonii wasn't racist enough or knew enough about racist tropes that it did cross his mind that "tribal people = cannibal". Honestly kind of a positive if it's a more common thing with the youngins
A few additional factoids that could potentially go onto the iceberg: - While Ninja Gaiden on the NES for a long time was considered to be the first video game with cutscenes, it's generally accepted that Pac-Man was the first game to feature cutscenes, at the time being called "Intermissions" or "Coffee Breaks". - A 2004 episode of VH1's show "Totally Obsessed" features a seemingly obsessive Pac-Man fan named Fred Willard who would play Pac-Man for several hours a day, had a massive collection of Pac-Man memorabilia and even created a mock religion around worshipping him. It was discovered a few years after the episode's premiere that Willard had exaggerated his obsession for entertainment value and while he is a big Pac-Man fan, he is nowhere near as obsessive as his on-screen persona. He a relatively normal guy with a loving wife.
Gonna have to say this was an amazing Iceberg video, people dont give Pac a lot of love nowadays and thats partly due to Namco but its nice to learn a few new things. Well made video!
"Only Green Ghosts can rebel" is *FAULSE!* Blinky's Daughter "Yum-Yum" rebeled aganst aganst her dad when her & Jr. Pac fell in love back in 1983! Get your lore straight, both of you!
It was based on a childhood theory. I had no access to jr. At the time. In fact I don't even think the green creature from pac and pal is a ghost come to think of it. Good on you for bringing it up though!
12:17 - The music for Pac Land is also taken form the Hanna Barbera cartoon, which is probably why the Pac-Land stage in Smash lacks it, because Time Warner (who owns H-B currently) most likely owns the rights to the song.
Awesome video, Namco used to really go all out with the different pacman games, I really wish they would make another pacman world, all namco bandai does these days is rehash the classic pacman 😢
Thank you! I totally agree, I like a lot of the takes on the classic formula but it feels like they used to be willing to take the character in a bunch of fun other directions and I'd love to see that type of thing again.
I remember watching the World Rally trailer in Namco Transmission 3.2 (the demo disc bundled with SoulCalibur III), from what I can tell, Galactic Outpost had the Pac-Man looking moon that wasn't there in the final and Arctic Iceberg was more pink and I think the whale had a bow? I think it also showed off Subterranean Speedway which was only exclusive to the PSP. Pac Man Fever looks a lot like Shrek Super Party, makes sense that they're made by the same developers
Man I remember the Pac-Man Power Pack that's were I got my nostalgic games from on the PS And what do you mean Pac-Man World 2 has a different disc art
@@joniivee I remember my power pack copy of world 2 being based on the greatest hits release in particular cause I noticed differences such as the frog boss name change and the net in b-doing woods
3:51 Given that Shadow, Bashful and Pokey are shown when Blinky, Inky and Clyde are referred, it's odd that Pinky doesn't get like, a Speedy Gonzales nod.
The explanation for the "Torture in Ghostly Adventures" was... oddly tame. I was expecting something relating to the yellow pac-person genocide that's brought up in the show's lore.
Not to mention the mass execution of every single soldier involved with Betrayus' army, including at least one minor (pinky), and that their bodies are in a container under tight confidentiality, meaning their families never even recieved any remains to mourn...
Upon further research, I see there's a faithful recreation for...Atari 7800 of all platforms: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9X37NS8b0C0.html (Along with a whole bunch of other Bally/Midway Pac-Man titles)
Another random fact that is not in this video so maybe it's even lower: Weird Al Yankovic in 1982 made a parody of The Beatles's Taxman called 'Pac Man'. It being a polka cover of the song with the lyrics changed and SFX from the game used. It was played on the Dr. Demento show a few times but then got a cease-and-desist letter from the song's publisher. It did not get an official release until 2017 when Weird Al released a Rarities album, getting permission from Namco and George Harrison's Estate. Also The Bloodhound Gang song 'Mope' samples the PacMan theme, and is also the source of the Pac-Man on Crack audio skit. I can't find any source that the sample was cleared or licensed by Namco.
This was super interesting. There's still a lot of little Pac-Man oddities and trivia I haven't learned. One of the reasons I like this franchise so much is because it feels like there's always more obscure and weird stuff to discover. Excellent video.
Oh snap now this is one heck of a good vid! Somehow I knew a lot of this, god help me. and if I can add to 10:17 I've seen some moden Pac-Man media calling the edible ghosts TURN-TO-BLUE, specifically a make up set if I remember correctly.
Oh yo, you're right! I can't find the make up set, but there is a lamp on Amazon that's labelled "Turn-To-Blue". Thank you for the kind words by the way, I'm happy you liked the video! :D
Sorry if I’m commenting again but another thing that might be related to the “mixed names” entry or maybe not is that the Apple II version mixed up the colors of some of the ghosts but the names are still intact. Just wanted to point that out.
@@joniivee And of course, Im Patient! The Kid (The GZ Guy, i'll call him Little Timmy for no reason) reminds me of one of those cringy RU-vid Rants back in 2014 up till 2016. Also, Did you know That There was a Prototype Version of The Original PacMan Arcade Game, i"ve seen bits and Pieces from the Prototype. The one that i still know is the Maze, it has no portal which means theres Dead Ends, no Power Pills & the Maze layout is almost like the 3rd Level in Ms. PacMan but Altered (I believe?) Thats it.
"WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA WAKA" -Pac-Man
Something you or the original creator of the iceberg forgot to add: In the sixth Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, Cabin Fever, Greg and Rowley build a somewhat playable cardboard version of the original arcade cabinet for their holiday bazaar.
“Slow of the mind; like he’s stupid!” Being slow of the mind is NOT stupidity! Just because someone’s brain is slow, does *not* mean that they are morons - it just works and processes things (much) *slower* than what is (supposed to be) normal.
6:03 this record is controversial for a different reason than his others, that being that Twin Galaxies surpressed any evidence that someone had previously got a 3,333,360, which had genuinely happened prior to the record.
8:44 Oh my fucking god, I never expected NecroVMX’s “Clearing Confusion” to be referenced ever again! Man, that dude is still very active on RU-vid but barely breaks out into double digits in views. I really wish he returned to his older style of videos, at least once. That dude is an old RU-vid Legend!
oughghhh this is such a vibe thank you I could also go off on my own iceberg about various pieces of trivia and theories i've formed (particularly involving pmatga and the world games) but this is great on its own, good job to everyone involved!!
I'm surprised there was nothing on the list about Clyde's name being Sue in Ms. Pac-Man, and nothing Pac-Man VS. on the Gamecube the that you also needed to own a GameBoy Advance and a unique connector cable to even play (this game replaces orange with green for the ghost lineup)
This is a fun iceberg this is a look at, and I definitely appreciate the research for Pac-Man's origin somewhat confirming the pizza story. I remember I heard it at one time, but I couldn't find the source again, and looking up generally online I couldn't find the story or if it was well known. So that fact alone helped me a bunch. Especially since I've been working on a Pac-Man retrospective video, and wanted to include that in the form of a joke.
The Japanese names of the ghosts are more direct about their personalities. What I've seen is that they translate to "Chaser" ("Oikake"), "Ambusher" ("Machibuse"), "Fickle" ("Kimagure"), and "Stupid" ("Otoboke").
Been enjoying your vids, can’t wait to keep going through. You have a very good voice for video essays tbh. Quick note: at 3:28, you bring up “paku paku” (mouth flapping onomatopoeia) which is パクパク, but use the characters ペコペコ for “peko peko” which is just to be very hungry 😊
First fact and you're already wrong about something. Wow. Puckman comes from the Japanese onomatopoeia パクパク which represents the sound of a mouth opening and closing and means to eat noisily.
@@joniivee You did, but the part that's actually wrong is that you speculated that the word puck in puckman comes from the character's resemblance to a hockey puck when puck in this case is just a romanization of the same Japanese phrase.
4:49 or 4:50 In a update of "Disney Cameos" Pac-Man also appears in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 when Peter Quill goes up against his father, turning Peter into Pac-Man for his love of 80s nostalgia. Peter Quill, never change dude. ⭐
21:53 Can confirm. The Atari PAC-Man is so common that one time I bought a box of N64 games, and for some reason there was a copy of the Atari pac man in there. I’ve never owned an Atari and even I have it
I can help explain Inky’s behaviour in the original pac man So imagine a line drawn with one end 2 tiles in front of pac man and the other end being Blinky. If you were to rotate it 180° from Pac man’s end, the other end is Inky’s target so in conclusion, Inky works with Blinky for him to basically flank Pac Man. How I got my info: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ataGotQ7ir8.html
13:43 chances are good, despite the pandemic, that the one near you is still available. I went to a casino as part of a convention in November 2021, and I saw they still had the world's largest Pac-Man as a machine in their arcade area.
Some beta elements of Pac Man World Rally that are different are the logo (obviously), little things like the moon in Galactic Outpost being Pac-Man, which wasn't in the final release as someone mentioned, the presence of Subterranean Speedway, and a few things like hud and UI elements being different (take a look at the icons for what position you're currently in in the top left corner for example). Thank you for the great video! Pac-Man really does border on being lost media quite frequently.
so fun fact about the TURN-TO-BLUE segment at 10:18, this was actually called IZIKE which is seen in the recent release of Pac-Man Museum+ in the figurine pull machine which is a way better name than just "TURN-TO-BLUE"
I'm surprise the original creator of the iceberg didn't include the fact that the ghost weren't actually ghost they meant to be monsters but the kind of look like ghost so everyone called them ghost
Some other interesting stuff I might add: - A Famicom homebrew port of Pac-Man Championship Edition was developed by a Japanese programmer in around 2008. It was never shared online except for a RU-vid video they posted. In 2020 it was upgraded and officially released as apart of the Namco Archives Volume 1 collection. The ROM can be downloaded and run on an emulator or even a real console. It has really well done graphics and sound and is overall an amazing demake. - A Western release of Pac and Pal was planned, which would feature Pac-Man's dog instead of Miru. It never came out. - There are versions of Pac-Man for the Sega Genesis and Super NES which can be played in Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures. They're very similar to the Famicom release, only with slightly upgraded sound and visuals. They're ports which are never really talked about and seem to be completely forgotten. - I actually have the plug and play console with the Pac-Man 256 game on it. It's just a modified version of Pac-Man, where you start with maximum lives at level 255. It's a version of Pac-Man which is completely overshadowed by the game of the same name which is obviously much more popular. - The Famicom port of Pac-Man was released on the Game Boy Advance under the Classic NES series of games. It's pretty faithful to the Famicom version but often goes forgotten due to Pac-Man Collection having a better version of Pac-Man which is more true to the arcade release.
12:30 funny enough, in that video game character light up I also recognized the egg from Burger Time. But that's easy to miss because, well, it looks like an egg yolk, not as distinctive as the rest
The growth really seemed to pick up and stay consistent at some point! I think a lot of it was Ms. Pac-Man, but Mario War, Monkey Ball 2, and the Pokemon VHS video also seemed to hook a lot of people.
As a kid I was absented with pac man, the main thing I remember was watching ghost adventures and liking it because Pac-Mans parents supposedly died. Yes that’s all I remember from it maybe I’ll try to watch it again kinda scared to
Man. Pac-Man really was one of my favorite video game characters, behind Mario. It's sad that Namco isn't giving him enough attention and giving him new games other then taking the classic games.
Just a heads up (9months late) but for the term used in 3:28 ペコペコ isn't the right word. It should've been パクパク. Instead the one used means more so hungry, while パクパク refers to the motion of eating
2 things I'd like to say about the fruit 1. I always thought that the melons were grenades 2. So the pretzel being a fruit doesn't make sense but a key is totally fine
As someone who considers himself a Pac-Man superfan, I was amazed when seeing that Japanese Pac-Man PC program! Knew about everything else though ;) Anyway, great video!! So glad someone's doing high quality vids abt Pac-Man.
There is a kamen rider movie called heisei generations dr pacman where pacman is like a bad guy. Yes its somehow officially license/approved by bandai namco, japan is weird
I don't recall playing the Google doodle version of Pac-Man that you showed, but I do remember trying out the Google Maps version of Pac-Man which I remember existing as an April 1st gag. I doubt that one's available anymore but it was a treat nonetheless
