Welcome to another edition of The Pace Report featuring saxophonist James Brandon Lewis live from Nublu at the 2023 NYC Winter Jazzfest.
James performed with his power trio featuring Josh Werner on bass and Chad Taylor on drums playing new music from his Anti Records release "Eye Of I." The Buffalo, New York native began playing clarinet at 9 and is a Howard University graduate and received his masters at Cal Arts where he studied with NEA Jazz Master Charlie Haden, Alphonso Johnson, and Waddada Leo Smith. His mentor is pianist Matthew Shipp.
During his musical journey, James has played and adapted most musical styles including Modal, Avant Garde, and contemporary jazz.
In this episode James and I talk about his new album, his project dedicated to the legendary Dr. George Washington Carver, and him being the first recipient of the Balvente Fellowship for the Doctoral Program in Creativity at the University of the Arts.
