Timeline check: Easy Company was still in training during the events of this episode, albeit in England. (“You’ve done it now, Yanks. You’ve captured me.”)
This is definitely my favorite episode, the line "this is as bad as my war gets" gets me every time, you can see how much that man cares. The misplaced shame in his voice makes me sad, he is doing god's work and still feels as though he isnt enough. Another great episode in these series, highlighting heroism off the battlefield.
My uncle fought the Germans in North Africa Sicily and Italy. In 44 he was transferred to the China Burma India theatre and all he ever said about it was that he wished he was back fighting the Germans.
I’ve watched Band of Brothers more times than I can count but this is the first time I’ve gone back to any of these episodes while watching with you. The Pacific is amazing but just very depressing. Those Marines going island to island repeating the same thing over and over again it’s just hell on earth!
That's honestly why I think this series is so good. It really introduces the viewer to the monotonous and depressing nature of the Pacific war and captures the atmosphere very well.
I love the things that you take away from these episodes. Some people just want action, but I think the reason The Pacific and Band of Brothers are so different is because they show ALL sides of war. The Pacific theatre was brutal, the tropical diseases and general environment were a war unto themselves. Really enjoy seeing someone so young taking an intellectual view of what the series shows us. Keep asking questions, keep learning, it is a quality lacking in recent years. You're doing great! 😀
I share your sentiments exactly @TankGurl! Thank you for expressing them and appropriately lauding Centane for who she is, what she does, and how she inspires more than she knows. Thank you all for getting here and helping to share the message of peace during these insane times. 🇺🇦
@@JP1 She is doing a great job with her reactions to some of the most horrifying sides of humanity. She deserves every compliment received! It is a joy to see younger generations wanting to learn of our history and the impact such events had on the entire world. History, though not always nice to learn about, shapes who we are now and is important so as not to repeat it. Sadly our world is once more in turmoil, but knowing we have younger people who are seeing things clearly, gives me hope for the future. Blessings to all ❤🇺🇦
Bob Hope, comedian extraordinaire, he start the tradition of visiting the troops. He went to Pavuvu. The troops there were headed to Peleliu next, (my Grandfather was one of them) in an interview after the war, Hope was asked why he did his shows in combat theater- he showed a clip from Pavuvu, no one was really laughing, but he cracked one liners anyway. He said look at that clip- most of them were killed just 3 days later. He said they deserved to be reminded of home, to laugh and we need to remember them
One Battle that isn't depicted in this Series, an extremely brutal and desperate battle, nowadays probably forgotten by most people, except for the Marines, of course. They'll never forget it. I'm talking about Tarawa (Betio) in November 1943. The island wasn't much bigger than the Pentagon’s parking lot, (I've read) There were a lot of Intel failures and waves upon waves of young Marines were slaughtered in the lagoon. For a while the issue was actually in doubt, and the very last reserves had to be sent in... That finally broke the Japanese, but it came at a cost - over 1000 KIA x 2 wounded. Probably one of the most savage battles in the Pacific.
Tarawa was briefly mentioned in episode 8. We learned a lot about how to conduct an amphibious landing while at Tarawa, and that knowledge extended to later landings from those in Normandy to Peleliu and Iwo Jima.
No matter how horrifying you think this series is, it was much, much worse. I recommend reading the books written by both Leckie and Sledge. Completely different first person accounts and both are compelling.
Centane, For some reason, I know its silly, but I kind of think of you like a grand daughter. I'm proud that you care and want to help. It does me good, and gives me hope. This episode always reminds me of some things my dad described to me. He was in the US Army in the Philippines during WWII, working as a medical orderly. I pray for the people of Ukraine and Russia, and for a day when there will be no more wars.
Rod Serling, the writer, producer of the 1960's The Twilight Zone series was a WWII Army Airborne paratrooper who fought in some of the most horrific battles to liberate the Philippines. The experience left him deeply scarred & he used that Twilight zone series as a relief valve for what he went through & also as a way to put out anti war, anti hate messages that were politically incorrect at the time. Something the TV series MASH would do in the later decades.
This series is as well done as Band of Brothers, but is even darker. The war in the pacific was much more brutal then the war in Europe and and to be slugged out inch by inch, island by island. I love your reactions to them both, and your desire to learn more. Most people your age don't think about or want to learn about history. As you said early in the review. This is happening again now. History has way of repeating itself. By studying and understanding history we can hopefully learn from our mistakes.
Nice reaction. An introduction to another of many of the enemies facing America's warriors in the Pacific Theater of Operations...the weather and the environment...
Remember in episode 7 of B.O.B. when Wild Bill was talking to Babe Heffron about why Lt. "Buck" Compton was so wound up. He told Heffron "It wasn't getting shot, it was being in that aid station. Believe me I've seen it". This episode shows you why guys like Leckie, Guarnere and Toye kept volunteering or flat out going AWOL from the hospitals.
2:16 To answer your question. Eugene Sledge (the kid that wants to join the marines) was the kid that fired a short round in training at the beginning of the episode.
leckie during cape gloucester had a pubic hernia, malaria and enurisis, you could say that the jungle is a real killer, you should read leckie's book called "helmet for my pillow". Greetings from Argentina.
As someone with skin problems (eczema), I can't even begin to imagine how awful it would be to never get dry in the perpetual rain of the Pacific islands
great video. Just wanna ask, can you do a reaction to a few Clone wars episodes and make it a series? Like, a series of reacting to clone wars episodes, and then Rebels. I think that would be good
All branches of the United States military had combat photographers. These were soldiers that were charged with making a photographic or movie record of the combat and events for historical purposes.
Thank you for watching The Pacific and realizing why we volunteer to serve. I do not remember who said it, but the truth is "The best defense is a strong offense." The meaning being if you have a strong military other countries will not try to invade because of the cost it would be for them. Japan made the mistake of thinking they could completely eliminate the United State's Pacific offense by attacking Pearl Harbor. They got it wrong and sorely paid the price. I think Russia is finding Ukraine has a better offense than they through they did, and is paying a greater price than what they thought they would. Hopefully Russia will realize this real soon and pull out of Ukraine.
She said during the video that she often just stays silent while watching this show because she doesn't know what to say. She is including the parts where she actually reacts to something.
^ as stated over, I can't include moments where I'm just quiet and showing footage, that'll leave it copyrighted and blocked🥺 I tried so for many episodes for Band of Brothers, but I've finally figured out how to dodge the copyrights 🥲
I'm sorry that this bothers you. The hatred the Americans are showing to the Japanese is not out of nowhere. And I hate to be the one to tell you this but they very very very much had it coming. Not all Japanese soldiers were bad just like not all Germans were bad. And not all Americans were good, same with the rest of the allies. But the vast majority of Japanese soldiers were fanatical and looked on others as less than human.
No, the current conflict is different. It's full blown invasion by Russian forces, whereas the 2014-2022 conflict was an internal battle between Ukrainian vs pro-Russian Ukrainian separatists.
