What an amazing series! It was beautiful, dark and didn't shy away from portraying the realistic damage caused by war in both the physical and mental. Sam and I can't wait to watch Masters of the Air and complete the WW2 miniseries trilogy! Thank you all for the support!

I really enjoyed watching your reactions to ''Band Of Brothers' and 'The Pacific'. I highly recommend that you read Eugene Sledges book 'With The Old Breed' or listen to the audio book on RU-vid for free. It's fantastic. It really puts you into Sledges state of mind and gives you a much better understanding of what he and the 1st Marine Division went through than the miniseries does.

Hey @@EdgyNumber1, I'm curious if that is your private opinion, or if it's been cited as being the most accurate. I know text can be difficult to sometimes so to be clear, I'm not being smarmy. @@CaesiusX It is. The director's other works take this pīss with creative license, so I would've written him off. However, Midway is a huge exception. In fact, there's so much accurate stuff he couldn't cram in there, such as detailing why certain seemingly small specific events occurred and what their effects led to, but believe me, the accuracy of those events was spot on. What I also like how the movie is taken from the perspective of both sides.

Snafu not waking Sledge up was actually sort of symbolic of his last compassionate act toward Sledge before leaving. All throughout Sledge's military career, he had to sleep in some of the worst conditions imaginable with an enemy that routinely slit Marine's throats in their sleep. For him to finally have a real rest, fully clean, in a safe environment back home and in shelter is well deserved as well as too good to be disturbed and as a veteran Snafu knew that.

Very true. I think it was Sledge's wife who said that she learned never to shake him awake, as he'd react violently. The best way to wake him was to whisper "Sledgehammer" in his ear - he'd immediately wake up, fully alert. The scars these men carried with them for the rest of their lives...

It is upsetting that Snafu just disappeared. I think he came from a really bad background. Eugene and Snafu kept each other sane I think. Hopefully Snafu could keep sanity after getting back.
@liltoaster7308
@liltoaster7308 2 года назад
@@72tadrian65 He did have a rough childhood if I remember correctly, but Snafu was similar to many veterans in that nobody wanted to remember their horrible time fighting during the war, especially not him as he served in three major campaigns. It's been said that Snafu never really talked about the war, and I'd imagine it would be hard to face the very people you fought with, lest the encounter inevitably bring back the memories and horrors of his service. It's definitely a feeling you'd want to disassociate from in every aspect.

This episode really made me love Eugene’s Dad, he absolutely understood what was happening to his son and didn’t push him to get back to civilian life, get a job, or look for a girl. He knew that what Eugene needed is just time for his mind to heal. Makes you realize how so many who returned would never have people like Eugene’s Dad in their life. Eugene was truly blessed and I believe it was the love and understanding of his father that saved his life and allowed him to heal from the war.
@rocker966627
@rocker966627 2 года назад
Continuing on what you said, his dad actually told Eugene to take up bird watching, taking walks, and enjoying nature (which they showed with the final scene with him laying in the field twirling the flower looking up into the sky) and Eugene is said to have confirmed that is what helped him heal after the war. Having a very understanding dad who knew exactly how to help his son heal. Reading Eugene’s books has really made me respect that man even more than I ever could’ve imagined. God Bless him and the rest of the men who fought in that bloody war.

I'm kinda sad that they dont tell the whole story of Sledge and his friends end to war. After the Battle of Okinawa, him and and other Marines did not know that the war was going to end in August 1945. They were actually preparing and training to invade Japan main islands, Yokohama Naval Base at the mouth of Tokyo Bay. They where expecting heavy casualties. Slege himself wrote "None of the Marines expected to survive such an invasion". When the war ended, Slege, Snafu, Burgin and the rest of the battalion where send to Beijing, China to participate in the ongoing Civil War. There were numerous casualties, before they returned to home in February 1946. Slege wrote a book China Marine, about his time in China and back home after the war. This book with his other book With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa and Robert Leckie's book Helmet for My Pillow, formed the basis for the TV series.

From what I remember reading Helmet for my Pillow, the reason that Leckie's parents are so cold is that Leckie was a child they never really expected to have. Leckie being the youngest and was born when his parents were quite old. He mentioned his parents was kind of tired of raising kids at that point which is why he felt kind of neglected and didn't really felt close to them growing up.

His Father and Mother were unable to say anything that needed saying! This hurt me very badly because my Father never ever told me that he loved me. Because of this I made a promise that I would tell my wife and then my son that "I loved them" everyday of their lives, and this increased to every time that they entered a room that I was in!

So one sad liberty taken with this episode is with Sledge, Burgie & Snafu. Sadly the scenes with them together on the train is fiction, in reality all 3 returned to America at different times. Burgie would return home first after Okinawa due to the point system. Sledge and Snafu would be deployed to China to help retain the peace and hunt down any non-surrendering Japanese soldiers in the area. Snafu would become a casualty early on due to disease as such he’d be shipped off bond, Sledge would return 6 month later alone after completing his last tour in China. While I see the episode as not following the true history, I think this is one of those times where the liberty taken is completely fine both to the series and characters, but also to the men our actors represent cause I’m 100% sure this is how they’d have preferred returning to America together

When I went through drill instructor school in 1981, With the Old Breed (published months earlier) was required reading. This series was based on the memoirs of both Sledge and Leckie. Both superb writers. When Sid and his sister were interviewed on camera in Ken Burns' documentary series The War, they talked about Eugene and how he never fully healed emotionally, although his study of nature did him a lot of good and helped him find some peace. Eugene's wife and children had to talk him into writing his story and getting it published. He didn't really see why people would be especially interested in him.

There is a great film called 'The Railwayman' about the mental trauma suffered by those captured and tortured by the Japanese. It's an amazing true story and stars Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman.

Leckie, Sid & Eugene wrote memoirs. I highly recommend 'With the Old Breed' and 'China Marine' by Sledge. And if you want a real time movie about the struggles of returning veterans from WW2 [not a very popular nor money making endeavor on the whole] I recommend 'The Best Years of Our Lives', but I'll warn you that for 1946 it is a hard movie to watch all the way through. Semper fi.

The officer seems even worse considering my grandma explained back then going on dates wasn't seen as the same level of commitment as it is now. It wasn't uncommon for people to be going on dates with multiple people they were interested in. I guess cause then they were more often just dates. Granted maybe that's how it was in the specific area my grandma grew up in.
@mr.osclasses5054

Dating was just that, dating. The aim of the guys in that scenario (as I'm to understand it) was to get the most dates with a girl where they were familiar with each other and decided to "go steady", meaning to exclusively date each other only. They also seemed to jump into marriage a bit faster as well. It wasn't uncommon to be engaged within a year and marry less than a year after that back then. And there was NEVER moving in together without marriage first.

@@mr.osclasses5054 actually yeah, my grandfather specifically married my grandmother in highschool so she could move in with him and not live with her abusive mother after he heard my great grandmother threaten to burn her face with an iron.... point is the NO moving in without marriage checks out

@@mr.osclasses5054 Dating is still dating, even with Tinder. And let's not pretend there wasn't just as much sex back then. Marriage has indeed changed, though. Just reminds me of Brian Wilson writing "Wouldn't It Be Nice" in 1965 on the back of all the Beach Boys' teen-drama songs. What a masterpiece.

I still can't believe my Great Grandad fought from Wake Island all the way to Okinawa as a Marine Infantryman. First thing he did was ditch his M1 Garand and used a Arisaka from a Japanese soldier he killed and carried it through the whole pacific theater and brought it home. I can't imagine the hell he went through during the war and lived with every single day through PTSD

A bill was passed I think in 1946 where a returning Marine/Soldier was guaranteed their old position back if they were still capable.

Good work, such a great series. So looking forward to their next series based on the exploits of the 8th air force over Europe. While he played a tool in this episode, the officer Vera shot down in favor of Leckie happens to be none other than the greatest spacebro since Chewbacca, Garrus from Mass Effect. Cool seeing him. Speaking of space, I saw a movie the other day you guys should do, Iron Sky. Nazis on the moon attacking earth. Funny and fantastically well done especially considering it's an indie/fan-funded film.

I was a marine and always hated the dress blues. So much effort to make them look good just to wear them maybe once a year. I think the Alphas look better, the green ones.

😱 *OMG! Sledge is Tim from Jurassic Park!¹* 🤯 I also think _Conor O'Farrell_ as _Sledge's dad_ was so perfectly cast. I'm really glad you reacted to this. I first watched it when it came out. And although it was 11 years ago, I had only just seen *Band of Brothers* for the first time immediately prior to *The Pacific.* And I really should have spaced them out. I made too many comparisons, even if subconsciously. But your reaction gave me a new appreciation for *The Pacific.* I look forward to watching it again in its entirety. And I'd very much like to read the two books by _Leckie_ and _Sledge._ 📚 ··•∶✺∶•·· ¹ ─ I kept trying to think of where I knew him from. And so I looked him up on IMDb.

So glad to see you watched the Pacific. Joe Mazzello (Sledge) and Rami Malek (Snafu) are still close friends and both were in Bohemian Rhapsody together as John Deacon and Freddie Mercury (academy award for Rami). Joe is one of the sweetest people ever and even though hes been acting since he was a child has always stayed grounded. Im proud and blessed to call him my friend.

I believe John didn't sign the insurance papers because doing so would've been acknowledging he might not be coming home and he did not believe in that. I believe that Shelton not waking Sledge was because he didn't want to have to actually say goodbye. That and the fact he didn't talk to any of his fellow Marines for 35 years shows that he really just wanted to put all the horrors of the war behind him. Then, when he saw Sledge had wrote a book and read it, he realized how much he meant to Sledge and decided it had been long enough.

Actually Sid never had sex with his Australian girlfriend, who eventually married a Spitfire pilot. Interestingly, the two did reconnect years later and one of Sid's daughters and one of the girlfriend's sons met and got along. Years later they in turn reconnected and eventually got married. So, the two (Sid and his girlfriend) became in-laws and had shared grandchildren.

One thing I have learned from this show and Band of Brothers is that War brings out the worse and the best in people. You see people do evil things and you see people become historical hero's.

In real life, Eugene Sledge and Snafu lost touch after the war. For many years, they led their own separate lives. However, when Sledge published his memoir in 1981, Snafu reached out and the two reignited their bond.

If you guys are considering another military/war-based movie/show, I would like to suggest M.A.S.H. First the movie, then the TV series. But beware, the series is really long and might be better done in segments. On the plus side, it is equal parts drama and sitcom and follows the 22ish minute sitcom format.
