I've used Sikkens most of my career since 1989. One thing i can tell you is I could easily paint the whole side with less than 21 ounces of clear. I spray with lower pressure and closer. We all have our own techniques. Efficiently is the game now with cost being outrageous.

Don't overthink it, it's just paint. But then we have blending additives or solvent reducer to blend the edge... I've learned there's tons of thinking involved in painting! That's why my beginner brain is blown!

Your channel has been such an inspiration to me. What I have learned on your channel allowed me to help a friend on an 1989 Ford 4x4 project. I have painted the cab interior, the back of the cab, front of the bed, under the hood, etc. The outside of the truck will get a professional paint job, but it's amazing how good the truck looks! Everyone is amazed that I painted it with no prior experience. :-) I have clear coat peeling on my truck side where a previous repair was poorly done. Now I have the confidence to paint it myself. It won't be "perfect" but it will look 1000% better than it does now. Thank you again!!

Had my nightmare paint job when I sprayed my fender flares. After I cleared it, a dark grey stripe appeared. I left it dry, sanded it a lil bit and resprayed. The stripe came back after the clear again 🙄. I said screw it and installed them. A month later quarter size fish eyes appeared over the entire flare. Another the paint separated. Whatever cause it ate into the flare and caused huge craters.

I started painting back in "74". Since then I've worked on over 12000 vehicles, some very small spot jobs, some very large overalls on trucks and not everyone went out the door on time. Auto painting is an art as much as a sicence and sometimes you need to go back and start over. My goal as a flat rate painter was to do good work like you did in this video and get my 80 hours done by lunch time on wednesday so that everything else is gravy. The hard part is doing that until your 70. During my last few years, every morning I told myself that you will be remembered by your last paint job, make it a good one! Your job looked great and your advice is spot on, you should be a Sikens paint rep.

We needed to get a piece of equipment painted to protect the underlying metal, and since we had planned to keep it a while we decided on a full strip and re-paint so that corrosion could be properly addressed. The OEM paint lasted an impressively long period of time, but almost 40 years of sun had done a lot of damage. We thought we took it to a professional, but as ours was in the paint shop and disassembled we heard of another owner who had an issue where the color and top coats fell away from the primer on the trip back from the paint shop. When we finally got ours back, three months after the expected completion, the color and top coats bubbled up in certain areas. It turns out, that paint shop owner thought he knew organic chemistry better than the paint manufacturers, so he was mixing and matching primer from one company, color from another, additives at ratios outside of manufacturer instructions, etc. Since the paint was not applied in compliance with the instructions, the multiple manufacturers involved did not warranty anything. The first shop was not going to pay for another shop to fix his problem without a lawsuit (and at $500/ hr our attorney fees would have exceeded the outright cost of a new paint job just with the normal summons and complaint/ pre-trial motions phases), we no longer trusted his work to fix his mistake, and the only fix was stripping back to bare metal and re-painting the whole thing, so we were looking at another five figures to paint a job not even a year old. Not fun. It is nice to see a professional showing how the job is done properly.

Brian, you remind me how important it is to use one step slower reducers on some of those high metallic colors for blending and smoothness. You did everything right on that one with blending the fender and quarter panel. The job turned out great and I really enjoyed the video as well. Keep up the great work and videos. You are an inspiration to me and Im sure many others.

Hey Brian, you always explain the steps and why.... for me I gained extra understanding of sealer...being clear and smoothe. I think there's so many terms bandied about that get confusing/confused for different products. Like I used to think sealer was a beige coloured primer kind of appearance.... What I HATE about modern cars is the plastic. They ALWAYS look like it was an after-thought that they got painted in a different shade. Your car there (GORGEOUS colour btw in natural light - in the booth it looked a bit 70's sh*t brown hahaha) has front and rear bumper covers and door handles - all look different. So I know it's a different substrate - so it offers a different end finish to the metalwork..... so if that's the case - why isn't a clear sealer used to stop that effect (as it works really well on primer?????). I feel like it spoils an overall appearance. I hope that's a helpful bit of feedback on the brilliant videos you do and the question may help others too. Stu :)

It appeared t0 me that with the paint and the clear you were about 90% overlap, and pretty good amount of air, and no runs.. I would have had runs, and my luck would have blown paint flakes off the plastic, as well as the tape, and most of that would land in the last coat of clear. My question is, are we watching this is real time, or is it doctored before we see it? Either way you did a amazing job. Thom

I don't know don't most of those like blending agents like db500 it just feels in the scratches for those heavy metallics that almost looks like a tri-coat actually that heavy gold it's just hard it can streak that's a hard color to paint. It helps to keep from seeing the scratches in the paint especially pewter or silver.

We know you mixed 320g/11.2oz base at a 70% ratio bc 224/0.7=320, but we have no idea how much clear was mixed. It helps people who can't guess the amounts waste less product. You definitely make this look too easy.

Is the super slow reducer helping with dry edges? When you did the top of door, A pillar on to the front fender, then went back to rear door and finally went on to the front fender. Times I do it, their is a dry edge and can't get rid of it and have to back track. Can be tricky.

Everybody body shop I meet, I tell them I watch Paint Society. I try to get their expectations as high as possible from the gate.

I learned that the reason why sealer will allow the base coat to go down better is because it isn't as porous as primer, and over reducing will break up the metallics better.

So in ur opinion which Sagola cap is better for clear and single stage? And what size tip? I currently spray PPG delfleet essential single stage and DCU2021 clear. I’ve been thinking about getting a Sagola.

After I painted my car, I named it, "The Hellcat", after everyone who looked at it said it was a paint job from hell :/ It's SO bad that I can't even drive it to church. I've had exorcists put their business cards under the wiper when I park it somewhere. I went to a fancy restaurant and the valet driver parked it beside the dumpster. I would show you a picture of it, but the car can't be photographed. I've tried several times.
