I had five, FIVE notifications about this embargo lift...and I choose to come here first. 😆(Gerald is a close second, tho lol). Thanks for all the great videos, my dude.
I went DP review, then Caleb, and onto Potato Jet. Definitely my 3 favorites. DP for the great duo, Caleb for the technical, and Potato for the personality/real world use!
As someone who stuck with a firmware-hacked GH2 for over a decade, this might finally get me to pony up for new GH series. In four years when I get one used under a grand. Thanks, kids, and your need to eat. Great video as always.
The GH6 looks fantastic, and I plan on picking one up! I really wish folks wouldn't judge so hard solely on AutoFocus. If you're shooting on a high end camera like a RED, no DP or cinematographer is concerned about autofocus. That being said, the GH5 AF was just fine. It was no Sony but it worked great. It was just trashed by some RU-vidrs (die-hard Sony fans) who failed to read their camera manuals, and put it through absurd tests.
The thing with shitty panasonic focus is that talking-head shots when you're on your own become a nightmare. I've got a g7 and g9, they're amazing workhorses and work perfectly with an operator behind the camera, but the autofocus issues were enough of an issue for me to buy a canon 90d with the godly sigma 18-35 lens. The sacrifice of IBIS for autofocus that works is probably worth it to 99% of youtubers and streamers.
I personally never use autofocus, no matter what camera, when filming anything talking head or interviews or stuff like that... and since it's a micro four thirds, I don't get nearly as much shallow depth of field anyway but it is a good thing for focus... even without moving the manual focus at all, the subject is basically always perfectly in focus :)@@Sam-vi2ho
@@castielvargastv7931 we were all beginners once so what's your point? beginners make it financially justifiable for companies to make cameras in 2022. If Panasonic doesn't cater to them, they will deem it unprofitable and only make $5000+ cameras for actual professionals.
@@KeithWongWL gh6 is not made for beginners. Panasonic has many good and affordable consumer cameras. No one complains the blackmagic cameras having no af at all and they ARE profitable.
Thank you so much Caleb. I woke up to the Gh6 celebration day today and this was the first official review that I saw. I am definitely going to remember this one for long. What a magnificent camera. Soon my GH5 will move to the dedicated Gimbal setup and the GH6 will take the throne of the main Rig. Cheers everyone!
Love the videos, but if you could always keep the GH6 on the right side of the screen (or left - one or the other) when doing comparisons it would really help. When you switch between them it get's confusing. This is especially apparent at 8:36 switching from color comparison to ISO comparison.
I’ve been using “spot metering” on my FX3 for awhile now by using spot focus to only show me a meter reading on elements that fall within the circle. It’s nice to see Panasonic pushing so many strong features of their own into this tiny beast! Great video as always.
You’re kidding me right? The FX3 will be better in every possible way. Very little noise if any in low light, real incredible auto focus. Panasonic is a joke compared to Sony. Go get yourself the FX3…: or better yet go get the A7S3… with it’s wonderful EVF.
By far one of the most credible, creative RU-vidrs I subscribe to. Thank you for your completely unbiased and informative reviews. I look forward to your future updates on this camera.
You're one of the youtubers who actually gets the little points right, so a creator using youtube vs a youtuber using cameras. Anyway, great review, thanks. I wish there was a photo centric version, love my 100-400.
No rubber grip on media door might be Panasonic's answer for it getting loose and expanding over time - I'm using my GH5 daily for 3,5 years now and I must say, sometimes it takes too much effort to open this door when rubber gets in between the door and rest of the body. Amount of times i thought "screw it, i'm gonna cut away exess rubber with a bread knife!" is getting higher and higher every week :D
I have ordered a GH6 and hopefully will get it in a day or two. I have used a GH5 since it came out and really liked what I could do with it and with the specs of the GH6 looking a lot better, I had to get one. I don't use autofocus much at all so not having perfect autofocus wasn't a deal breaker for me but it does look much improved. I didn't know about the color difference but the skin tones do look a lot better. I remember saying that after upgrading from a GH4 to a GH5 as the GH5 made my skin tone veer slightly orange/yellow.
Excellent review! This looks a stunning little workhorse :-) Switched to Lumix cameras 4 years ago and just love them. This looks very much like it will be addition to my kit :-)
@Random Thought what a load of bull on par with the sony a6400 you probably need glasses . or maybe you do not understand the phrase "on par" . DFD autofocus is just a bad outdated technology and will never be even close to phase detect af they have been trying for 10+ years and its hopeless their flagship can only shoot 7 fps with cont af what a joke it can not even compete with cameras half the price that are several years old now i like mft the sensor size is perfect for shooting video however panas dfd autofocus is utter trash
@Random Thought I have a full frame S1 and S5, which use the same AF system as the G9. They do NOT focus nearly as well as my Sony a6500, which is an AF system that is two-generations old (compared to the AF system in cameras like a6400).
@Random Thought have Shot extensively with a g9 and with the gh5ii so i do know what i am talking about . A lot of Gimbal Work too and i can tell you thats we Had to retake a lot of shots because of soft Focus or flickering and focus pumping . Before we switched to Sony at first we had a7iii and a6400 we mostly used the a6400 because the laserlike focus . Now we pretty much only use the a7siii and it Is a film makers dream . Maybe you think the af is as good because only used it twice . And the mft system Is not Bad when you can Manual Focus but If not it Is really not good
Absolutely the best review out there, from a video centric viewpoint. Extremely well laid out and balanced presentation of the camera as a cinematic tool. Subscribed. WAY, WAY BETTER than Gerald Undone or ProAV's shallow presentation of the GH6 as a cinematic tool.
Hi there. Thanks for your fantastic review of the GH6. I currently use the GH5s and love it but love the specs on the GH6. The colour has improved greatly and the dynamic range. I prefer the low light performance on my GH5s but do like the high resolutions this beast captures. 4K 120fps at 10 bit is impressive. The recording facility has greatly improved also. I am going to wait before I purchase this camera like I did when the GH5 was released. I waited for just over a year and was about to purchase a GH5 and they released to GH5s which blew me away with it's improved colour, low light performance and that lock down multi aspect ration sensor which I wanted.
3:20 I think this is the first official camera I know that has an HDMI 2.1 output. Very interesting. We just need proper HDMI 2.1 capture cards and recorders now.
This camera is an impressive statement of Panasonic's technical capabilities. I am curious to see all that tech finding its way into a moderately priced full-frame camera of Panasonic. That would be a real winner. Although being a full-frame shooter I am impressed what OM Systems (Olympus) and Panasonic have done recently with the 4/3 format. Very good news for those people who are invested in 4/3 lenses!
Hi, I just started using Nikon Z6 II with a Sirui 75mm T2.9 1.6x Full Frame Anamorphic Lens and daytime shooting is fantastic but nighttime or low light their is noise like crazy, what am I doing wrong I have raised ISO lower Shutter nothing fixes this, can you help? Thank you.
Man it’s been a while since I seen your channel, just gotta say you look really healthy and look like you’ve lost some weight! Great review, as a gh5 fanboy I want this
Great video, Caleb! I'm in the market for another camera that would pair well with my Pocket 6k, so this new GH6 falls in my consideration. And your insight and analysis helps a lot to see the value here. Looking forward to your next video!
Yes I will piss my pants and cum. I’m getting the GH6 over the S1 and I’m praying to God that it gets a external BRAW firmware update. It would be crazy if they don’t considering they allowed it to all their recent cameras.
We've got 6 GH5 units and I've been waiting on the GH6 for awhile. I love the review, but I might hold off to see if Panasonic releases a box version of the camera. I've almost switched over the BGH1's a few times. I still might pick up a GH6, but I don't be replacing all of the GH5's we use.
Man, I was hoping for some kind of internal ND, physical or electronic. I know, I know…they probably had to keep it out to keep the body so small, but I’m so done with screw-on ND filters. I’m also kind of done with speed boosters, which is why I’m actually considering the BMPCC 6K Pro instead of this. But, dude, can you imagine if Panasonic put the GH6 specs in a BMPCC sized body with room for internal ND and mini XLR inputs? That camera would be unstoppable.
Great video but 5:45 you had all of the resolutions even 4:3 but it would been. Nice to see anamorphic at 21:9 just to see😊 I know we can use 16:9 for the Sirui 1.33x lenses though. I tried open gate with those Sirui anamorphic lenses but I still have to zoom in to make the image fit and it’s not much of benefit to use 4:3 or open, with those lenses at least.
Great news! So throw in the Sigma 60-600 f/4.5-6.3 with an XL Speedbooster and you get in pixel to pixel 4K a constant f/4 58-580mm or 115-1150 f/4 in ff eq 😎 great for surf 🏄🏾♀️🏄🏽♂️
Alright, this thing has a ton of new awesome features, but as a GH5 user who has no need for those features, this is an easy no-buy for me. Fantastic review Caleb, hope you're doing well
4k120 10 bit would be so fun to use. And those colours are dramatically better. Still there's other things I need to buy before upgrading my body unfortunately! I'll probably own this one day
holy smokes!! this review has really highlighted what makes the GH6 great! the press release sheets and specs have shorted this camera's abilities so much. I own the gh4, g85 and the BMPCC4k... from the hybrid stand point, this GH6 has really upped the game, especially if they can make that external SSD recording have more codecs and flexibility. If you're shooting video only, BlackMagic is still spanking everyone and that's assuming BM doesn't release a 2022 camera. Caleb, Panasonic should be using your review above ALL OTHERS as it covers all the bases that shooters would be looking for.
plus the ability to control your own fan speeds is amazing. Sometimes, we just need to be able to take the risk that the filming stops because of overheating during an interview.
just an idea....using DJI's Lidar system could be a great alternative to DFD AF. supposodly it can be used stand alone without a gimball. but I think my next move will be getting a gimabll with the lidar for the auto tracking and manual lens focusing features for my canon setup. and When I venture over to a GH6 I wont half to worry about AF
Not sure if I missed it, but over the years you seem to skip over the standard color profiles. This is a major camera for live streaming, so I would appreciate you touching on the standard color profiles in the future. Not just log. I have two FX3’s and am curious if these would be better for live streaming.
Great Review. So much detail man. Did you ever have your hands on a GH9, cause thats what i´ve been using for filming my first year and i really liked the cam beeing a perfect mix of all Lumix attributes.
Dynamic range is like 11 stops. What am I missing from this footage that puts it above any of the other full frame cameras you mentioned with more dynamic range, not to mention the BMPCC cameras, that make it suddenly a "cinema workhorse"?
The main thing this camera has over most of its full frame competitors is the pretty solid IBIS, and solid range of framerate options and codecs. Blackmagic of course has great codecs, but they don't do so well in the other categories. The GH6 has some other drawbacks like the high ISO in the drboost mode and not particularly groundbreaking dynamic range just in general, but otherwise it does look like a solid tool for the price.
Hi Caleb and thanks for yet another great review. I've been thinking about getting the Blackmagic 6K Pro. Generally, how would you compare them? Thanks for all of your help over the years helping me choose the right gear for my needs.
Caleb, can you please do a deep dive into video on the new OM-1? I'm hoping it's basically a GH5 with better autofocus. I know it won't match the GH6 for video, but hopefully it's comparable to the GH5. The lack of waveforms and vectorscopes (or even zebras?) is annoying. Does it matter that the internal H.265 recording is only 10-bit 4:2:0 instead of 4:2:2? Are the UHD and 1080p improved over older Olympus cameras? Etc. Etc.
