A new series which takes a look at one of Panasonic's most popular super zoom bridge cameras. This series has the aim of allowing you to understand what is required with this camera in order to get acceptable results.
In part 1 I discuss the camera controls, the limitations of the camera, some simple user modifications to make the camera easier to use and then look at how images are captured. Without going into too much technical speak I will try and show you how to get the best from this camera. If you want to learn more then there are other playlists for this camera on my RU-vid channel which go into much more detail.

Graham - I've watched many camera instructional videos over the past 10+ years, by a variety of folks. No one explains things as clearly as you do - it's logical, user friendly and filled with helpful extras that drag us across the finish line. Thanks for the video, good to know f 2,8 is like f11 in dslr. I own the fz300 and used to think f4 was equivalent to f11 for dslr. Now I see why with f 2,8 everything is actually in focus. Thanks a lot

good not to get too involved - my favorite cameras have taken my favorite photos - portraits = Fuji FX100 easy call ( diabolically good for a plebe like me ) - Sony X-10 for most of everything else ( after I cut the Nikon cord ) ..... but I have one of these now that my kids want to also take memories .... solid rig for $375 - great review

Good information especially about the F stops. Only suggestion I would make is when you displayed the differences in sharpness at different F stops I could not make it out in viewing in HD; perhaps you could take a crop from a 100% view and that may be more revealing. Best wishes! Good efforts. Too bad about the face detect issues.

Hi Graham. Many thanks for sharing such an informative video. I also have a DC FZ82 and have a question for you. How do I blur the background on close-up shots and portraits? I have owned SLRs in the past and it's usually easy to blur the background just by selecting a wide aperture. This doesn't seem to work on the FZ82. Do you have any suggestions?

Dear Graham Houghton, You really make the world a better place with so much effort on video's! Looking up to you being an example figure about how I want to get old. Somehow the showbizz is scaring me, not knowing all those people viewing the video's and understanding the real meaning of life for everybody: to be happy with doing what you like to do. Were you planning on becoming so popular from starting a channel about 13 years ago or did the amount of views become more than expected and are the earnings underrated? How does it feel to be popular, is it just a material thing (example would the video's have been produced anyway, independant from many people view to generate income)?

I have both the 300 and 200. The 300 doesn't allow one to shoot in RAW if the zoom is extended past 600mm, but the 200 does. Does the 80 shoot in RAW past 600mm?

I have a Panasonic lumix G3 at the moment with a 14 - 42mm lens and am considering either, buying a longer zoom lens for getting wild life shots , buying this FZ82 or going for an entry level DSLR with a zoom lens. truth be told, I am leaning towards the FZ82 as I dont think I can justify buying an expensive DSLR and this camera is not much more expensive than buying a lens for my G3. Is this camera a step up compared to the G3?

Hi Graham I looked at a lot of video's of you Especially the one with this camera Bought it some weeks ago and I am very happy with it Lost the manual , so I can not set it up again like before How to set it on iso 80 ? Maybe I am wrong but I see the iso begins at 200 Can you tell me how to find the good settings for that camera ? Yesterday took some pictures of our small trip They have a lot of noise in it Is there a good program for it to make the noise better? Hi Graham, would you recommend the FZ82 for a complete beginner please? I've been looking up different cameras and it's driving me crazy! , I have a very small budget and I think the fixed zoom lens may be easier to operate with having a dog on lead with me everywhere I go. I have also looked at the FZ45 as very cheap second hand but I can go to the price for a second hand FZ82 if it is a lot better. Are there any others I should consider please

I'm not very technically minded and I have bought this camera because I need a good zoom lens to take wildlife photos, however, I am at a loss to understand most of the jargon. Is it possible to use this camera as an aim and shoot, that's all I need. Also everytime I turn the camera on there are all sorts of things showing on the screen, how do I delete these and stop them coming up every time.

Thanks for re-open the FZ82 tutorial. Does it make sense to take pictures in raw with FZ82? I tried it but the post-processing result was far beyond my expectation. (I shoot raw+jpeg with my Olympus camera and the developed raw file is much better than a sooc jpeg picture.). What do you think?

It is true that a little better results can be achieved using a RAW file however the gains are very small with the smaller sensors and getting the right parameters in camera to produce the optimum JPEG might be more beneficial. I cover this in part 2 of this series

Hi Graham thank you for a v interesting video. Am currently considering buying this camera. What a shame this camera doesn't have a tiltable lcd screen. Is the screen usable in strong sunlight? I previously had a fuji s4000 but I had to use the viewfinder for all outdoor photography and I don't want to make the same mistake again. Thank you for your valuable time.

Graham I'm looking for a first camera and I haven't made my decision yet. My picks are the lumix fz82 and sony a3000. What do you think I should go for?

I haven't used sony cameras now for over 12 years so I'm not familiar with the newer generation. A lot will depend upon what you need to photograph and where you will be using the images produced. For things like display on tablets and smartphones or on web based sites you may find that the total flexibility of a bridge camera is more useful however consider the likes of the FZ330 which has more potential and better lens (but without the x60 zoom)

I don't really have access to willing models in order to do this and it is a genre that does require a good understanding of the art of posing and someone who is skilled at make up to do full justice to the model. I'll look at some alternatives for future projects.

i went for a permanent bond using a super glue but you could use lower tack adhesives if you intend to remove it at some point

So if I’m trying to shoot zoom photos of birds, it sounds like I should lock in aperture at F2.8 and ISO at 80 and automate shutter speed? That’s the best way to let the camera do the best job at getting sharp images? Because I don’t want grainy images (higher ISO). If it turns out I can’t get a razor sharp image due to low shutter speed I’d rather forego the shot.

Yes regrettably this is one of the areas where this camera is not really suited to this type of photography. A larger sensor with higher ISO ability is needed coupled with a large aperture long reach lens - it is a case of understanding the need for high shutter speed needing higher ISO in this situation.

Why does my fz300 only zooms up to 75mm

My FZ80 shutter time drops when I set the ISO past 400iso in M mode and S mode, it goes from a max of 4 seconds down to 1 sec if I set the ISO to 3200 in Manual mode so it is not a true Manual camera, say I cannot set the shutter at its maximum of 4s and the ISO at 3200 at the same time and take the night sky. Why is it advertised as having manual mode when you cannot set it in any Shutter ISO combination?

That's a total different type of camera. There is always a "better camera" but its only better when you know how to make a good photo with it. Lenses are expensive and you need to carry more stuff around. For beginners, the Nikon is a pain in the ass if you want to learn fast and want some variation and lens options on a budget without thinking about what kind of lens you want to use when you'r going outside.

Try this with a more defined subject to reduce the auto focus problem - the drift is more noticeable at longer focal lengths if you use iA modes and set the camera to 2400mm. At normal optical zoom of 1200 you should not notice it.
