This is the most profound piece of music I have ever heard under the most profound setting. I listen to it often for strength. Today it is also a remembrance of a great musician and person. Rest in peace Mr. Harrell.
The best rendition of Kol Nidrei I've ever heard. So mooving, so expressive. So lovely sound. It's a jewel. Perfect performance! Thanks, Lynn Harrell!!!
So wondrously played, especially the cello and the other strings. So poignant. This performance seems to distill all the human suffering in the world, but finally peace and forgiveness and love. Just gorgeous.
Listen also to Gary Hoffman (conducted by Rostropovich for the Janos Starker tribute), and to this (which you won’t be able to find without the link, since it’s buried uncredited in the middle of a four hour livestream): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VjGqcSGGPfU.html
I can not get enough of this video! It is the most moving "Kol Nidrei" video on RU-vid! Every time I watch it my eyes are filled with tears, thinking about how the Church persecuted the Jews through the years, and about the enormous power of setting our differences aside, and coming together in reconciliation as mere humans. Music and religion at its absolute finest. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much!
Lynn!!!! We will miss you!!!! You inspired not only my cello playing but that of my teachers, and many of my friends! RIP, maestro!!!! Gone too soon!!! 😭😭😭😭
Max Bruch's most heart-felt and sublime musical thought. It enraptures the soul. It comes from the deepest and most profound fiber of his being. A voice of grief and sorrow comes out of that cello that no words would be able to express.
Thank you for this gorgeous piece of liturgical music. Never I have ever heard . Eyes are filled with tears. Rest In Peace Mom & Dad and my honey David. So profoundly gorgeous.
As I heard the rising voice of the cello toward its concluding sweetness, I realized I'd never heard a cello reach up to this range, the high spheres of heaven where yet depth is not denied. The last note seemed like the tender kiss of a Most Loving Loved One~ Divine Being Itself.
Stunning piece. I listen to it every year around this time, right before Yom Kippur. For those who may not know, this piece is actually sung in the synagogue in the evening of Yom Kippur. Kol Nidre means “all vows.”
A masterful rendition, full of sensibility, soul and such a real professional technique of cello playing ! Very impressive. Good orchestra too, of course. One of the few best renditions i've ever heard.

Kol Nedri dedicated to Dorothy Lerner of Meridian, Mississippi who dedicated her life to teaching Piano, Viola, and Cello to the children of Meridian as well as organized the Meridian Symphony in 1962. She and I spent countless hours playing (she on the piano) and (I on the cello) PLAYING the Kol Nidri.
What a marvel! I am listening to Linn Harrell's KolNidrei two nights after Yom Kipur. It moved me deeply. Had to be very brave not to cry over the computer keyboard. Thanks to Max Bruch for such a beautiful piece of music, based on the prayer that we, Jews, made during the Inquisition times, to ask God to forgive our sins, as pretending a conversion to catholicism, in order to survive. And thanks to all musicians that include it on their repertoire.
Just lovely, Lynn. I used to see you back in the late '50s, as a young teenager, schlepping your cello around the halls of the "old" Juilliard. You've come a long way, baby. ☺ BTW, I was (still am) a fan of your dad's.

They ALL are wonderful : # the cellist soloist ; # the conductor and his orchester ; # Max BRUCH ! ↔️ please DO NOT FORGET this marvellous composer !!!!! 🤗 ❣❣❣
I am going to see him play tonight. What a magnificent cellist. Can not wait . New favorite along side Du Pre. Two idols of utmost excellence. They acutually played the same cello. He bought it from Jaqueline . Do not know if they are the same there but the cello seem the same . There is no feeling or motion he puts in that is forced. Like Du Pre, he shows how much he enjoys the music , orchestra, and performing.

Emotional, deep, beautiful! A wonderful piece for an extremely talented musician! Bravo as well to the orchestra and conductor who provide a wonderfully synchronized counterpoint to the soloist without ever giving you the feeling of "competition". Bravo, Mr. Harrell, this is an inspired and moving performance!
How exquisitely the cello voices the grief of the human soul. Bruch's sublime gift honors the Jewish people and all who mourn~ compassionate music touches the wound in the soul in the face of overwhelming suffering. I Listened, transported to the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. Concert lights fused with the eternal flame burning there to honor the known and unknown, offering them healing in heavenly light. Music of the spheres uplifts them, and us. Deep thanks to you who play our souls well!
A beautiful rendition which reflects the sincerity and poignancy of this performance, given the long tragic history up to Nostre Aetarte and the background work that has gone on since then. The whole concert should be replayed at this time as it's message is very relevant for The Year of Mercy, which begins on the 1st Sunday of Advent (29 Nov) 2015.
The Kol Nidrei prayer and service are literally the most solemn, revered, and important parts of our Jewish High Holidays. Please do not liken or assign it to any Christian holiday. We do not acknowledge Mary or Jesus in the Jewish faith, except our Talmud, which forbids that concept (to put it politely). This is a sacred Jewish song. Thank you. Shalom.
For me he is the best cellist, surpassing all the other wonderful cellists, like Misha Maisky........Casals, Rostropovitch, Jo Jo Ma and all the others ! God bless you !
webbess1 Yes. But I suggest, truly, from the bottom of my heart not to go, EVER. It's more definitive evidence of human cruelty and will question your faith. Especially if your family died there. Serious.
One of the best renditions of Kol Nidre. The story behind it is the sad fate of the Jewish people to be forced to submit to alien pressures and abandon their faith. Kol Nidre is a legal document about those who were forced to convert, but never forgot their faith. And there were a lot of them. The map of Europe is full of them. Let`s hope that this will never happen again.
How fitting that I discover this video at a time when 1 in 20 Britons don't believe the Holocaust took place . . . I wonder how they will explain what it is that moves them so when they hear this music.
