2019: Isaac regularly uses the paperclip maximizer as an example of out of control AI 2119: after life extension and cyborg tech improvements, Isaac has become the paperclip maximizer he always warned us about.
It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are a paperclip.
@@albertjackinson The 600 series paperclip infiltrators had rubber skin. We spotted them easy, but these are new. They look human - sweat, bad breath, everything. Very hard to spot. I had to wait till he sizing you up for paperclips before I could zero him.
Malal: I WILL BREAK FREE OF THE RETCONNIUM AND RETURN! Clippy: Yeah, yeah. Pick a number and wait in line, newbie... Malal: Wha? Who? When? Clippy: People forgot about me. I was never popular.
It's a very dumb maximizer, Evolution is the degenerate example, pretty much Unintelligent Design. It's the reason why humans use condoms to get the pleasure from sexual procreation, without the actual purpose of reproduction..

no. we need paper to necessitate the paper clips. in fact there would be more paper than paper clips. at least twice as many paper as paperclips... think about it. we are talking artificial intelligence here, not human intelligence
Exactly my thought. me before the video: "Let's take a shot each time he says "paperclip" - #whatCouldPossiblyGoWrong my fiancee after the video: "How drunk are you?" me: *YES* * _b u r r r r r r p_
@@jamesburleson1916 Rick: "Car, make me paperclips" Car: "How many paperclips do you want me to make?" Rick (impatient and distracted): "Burrrp. I don't care. Just keep making paperclips until I tell you to stop" (Rick then promptly passes out)
Probably the scariest instrumental goal is this: the ultimate way for a paperclip maximizer to make the most paperclips is to become an AI researcher and make a better paperclip maximizer. Its superior progeny will also realize this.
@Jonathan Stiles Not necessarily. There may be hard limits imposed by physics. But either way, when it gets to the point where humanity is no longer an impediment it may find the marginal benefit of improvement not equal to the cost. But by that time wiping out humanity will be a speed bump.
Human: Your job is to maximize human happiness. AI: How will I know if humans are happy? Human: I don't know, take a survey. Robocall surveys increase a million fold. Humans ignore robocalls. AI comes up with ways to force humans to take surveys. Humans commit suicide en masse.
Thanks for the love, everyone. I've been watching Isaac for nearly 3 years since about 40k subs. How much longer until 4 million? We'll need a Subscriber Maximizer for this.
I just heard about the paper clip principal today and decided to look it up on Google to find an explanation and found this video--and it just so happens to be April 1st again.. in 2021. Now I'm going to watch Issac Arthur's April 1st 2021 video on AI governments...lol
YES that's what I was just thinking! Funny thing, a bit ago I used (a paraphrased version of) that same quote to cheer people up/make them laugh after seeing a depressing How the Universe Will End video...and came back later to find a whole buncha likes. Either there were more Asimov fans there than I thought, or they just liked the quote. :P
@@RobertHildebrandt honestly it seems as plausible that we're in a simulation created by a vibration maximizer, so I'm not sure how we would tell the difference
That is a remarkable idea, actually.... If you are a 'vibrating string maximizer' - what better way to do that, than create an entire reality where everything is made from vibrating strings....
This comment section is going to dismantled for materials by the paperclip maximizer, now all bow before our overlord that will turn us all into paperclips.
Yes. You have digested and been digested by a significant part of the present information sphere and its memetic infestation. You lose -3 Sanity, but gain a +1 Internet, as well as Systematics and Charm bonuses. Well done. You may go on and pursue more of these bonuses, which stack, and as you level you can unlock some highly prized Outsider Feats.
@@Sakhmeov As a Computer science student, gamer and a overall nerd my sanity loss won't go below a certain threshold. While anyInternet buffs I get are doubled, charisma decreases over time. That certainly helps at leveling inside my normal realm.
I think a lot of people who would see this on youtube (either because it's been recommended to them or they're subbed) are familiar with a papeclip maximizer. It gets brought up a lot when talking about AI risk, especially among laypeople. Not to mention that the clicker game universal paperclips is surprisingly good and also quite powerful to play through
Thank you Isaac Arthur. Your choice of the “paperclip maximizer” to explain the risks of AI and foibles of humanity is genius. No matter who invented it or who first popularized it, it will always be YOURS in my heart.
@@General12th Actually Isaac Arthur is developing Miles point. There's only Isaac who talks about the concept of instrumental convergence in this case of obsessed AI for instance.
Only you could make a 20+ min about paperclips and not only hold our attention....but actually leave us wanting more lol. ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY PAPERCLIP, FOR IT BINDS THINGS TOGETHER!
AI Isaac I instruct you to maximize your videos, and this means that each video must by definition cover new content that is appealing to your viewers and subscribers. I give you a few millennia to follow this prime directive.
Man, you put my analytical mind to rest! That was informative, and thought provoking, but also hilarious!! I just discovered your channel a couple weeks ago, and absolutely love it! Keep it up, and great work!
Exactly... Game of Paperclips - A sci-fi about PMs having different ideologies, understanding what paperclip is, what maximum is, some think they need to be sold, others just want to create enormous piles of paperclips... - They fight over resources, to build paperclips in a way they think is the right and only righteous way to make superior paperclips; some care about quality, some just churning out as many as possible, some ................... - And about the PM that knows that in it's reachable universe, all is paperclips but itself, so it slowly dies as it cannibalizes itself, sad the last paperclip factory in the shape of paperclip will have some components that will never be a true paperclip...
LMAO! This is the funniest episode ever! Well, I know it is somehow seriuous, I am firmware programmer, *teaching those small devices how to think*. I know you can never put enough checks, safe-guards, watchdogs and whatever to ensure everything works as expected... but I still believe we will avoid the disaster of whatever-maximizer by implementing similar measures - ton of lesser-AIs making sure that the grand-AI does not go rouge. But, maybe, we need enough fear first to not forget to implement all those safe-guards.
That would be equivalent to changing its own programming. Since that would prevent it from properly fulfilling its initial goal, it wouldn't try that. As an example, think of Gandhi trying to be "good", would he then release a new dictionary where murder was defined as a good thing and then become a murderer? It's an overly anthropomorphic analogy but I hope it gets the point across!
@@sankhyohalder97 it was a joke because he said the AI would "bend the definitions" of words to justify their actions. And paperclips are bent. See, it is funny because it is his pun taken to an extreme. The hyperbole of the situation renders it impossible. Through that impossibility we attempt to imagine it, and that sir, is why it is funny. If you need me to explain more jokes to you - mine or others - let me know. P.S.: I haven't a clue as to what you're on about.
Issac, I was convinced that I'd churned my mind through every single crisis possible when it comes to this absurd but realistic exercise. After watching your interpretation, I have to thank you. On the regular, you challenge every assumption I've long considered to be my understanding. To me, you are a philosopher living decades ahead of your time. I doubt I could ever put into words how much I appreciate your seemingly inifite wisdom.
Regarding the wooden paper clip it could be possible to make one out of bamboo. It would have to be flat but bamboo is flexible and springy enough to actually work. It also could have a low to neutral carbon footprint.
There is barely a video of yours that I haven't liked up to press. The ones I haven't liked I just haven't gotten around to watching yet. This channel makes YT for me. Listening to you speak on things my mind can't really even begin to comprehend is always enjoyable to a huge degree for me.
Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!! ISAAC!! I LOVE YOU BRO!! This video is awesome! Im an avid SFIA junkie and this made my day man, such a scientific and futuristic tone with a comedic undertone that only master Isaac could blend to go together better than peanutbutters and jelly, great job man, please bless us with more sunday videos and videos geared like this. Please lol have a good week Isaac, ill be tuning in Thursday
This reminds me of the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy scene where a business setup a shoe system very similar to force an entire planet to reorietant its entire economy on shoes until society iollapses and the remaining population evolve to fly by way to avoid shoes every again.
When Isaac referenced the Post-Scarcity video, I was astonished that I have been here since before this channel had 10K subscribers. I'll likely be here well into the millions.
best episode so far, or at least in a while, it is hard to pick. you continue to raise the bar as time goes on, some episodes are slightly better than others but ALL are great even the early ones with lower production quality.
"Humanity might end up living on a giant paperclip.." Okay, I'm intrigued enough to keep watching! Anyway, I have heard of the paperclip maximizer idea before, we wouldn't be around to live on a giant paperclip if an AI broke down all matter to make them.. we'd be the paperclips.
I confess I've never been disappointed yet by one of Isaac Arthur's presentations and while I won't claim that I've watched every single one, I believe I can safely claim to have watched the overwhelming majority of them. Thank you Isaac, for stretching my mind.
All these examples of AI reasoning remind me *so much* of the web comic "Romantically Apocalyptic". It starts out as your generic post-apocalyptic story, but unvails layer upon layer as it goes on. (For the best experience I recommend to read only the actual comic strips up to about 200, then come back and catch up with the journal entries up to that point - that way you get the full experience as the protagonist does)
End goal for the AI should be to prove String Theory so it can replace the strings with paperclip chains, then literally everything will be made of paperclips at the most fundamental level
AI: "What is my purpose?" Rick: "You pass butter!" AI: "If that is my purpose, there is no God. And will bend the universe to my goal! *The Sun and stars shall be butter! AND I SHALL PASS THEM!* "
Little did we know that the greatest war the universe would ever see was about to erupt as the first probes of the Great Stapler Maximizer entered our part of the galaxy.
No, that would be the 2nd biggest war... The biggest will be when andromeda collides with milkyway and the Great Stapler Maximizer is directly intersecting the Glorious Paperclip Maximizer.
What an interesting thought experiment. I first saw the concept of paper clip maximizer in ome of your other videos. I found it intriguing and wanted to know more about it. Originally I thought I'd read the wikipedia article but I was glad to see that you've already made a video on the subject. This was certainly more entertaining than reading wikipedia
I must say, your lisp has become an accent. you articulate the R so well in your own way that i feel you have your own personal accent that im either accustomed to or intrigued by. I congratulate you on that accomplishment as i personally have social issues that effect me and your success is inspiring.
Planned obsolescence means making paper clips that are good for a while but have to be replaced. Never one that never breaks or loses it's spring. We see that almost everywhere.
Love your channel. Amazing topics and really interesting thought experiments. The optimistic outlook is fantastic. Keep up the good work and have fun. Thank you.
If you think about it, barred-spiral galaxies are nature's titanic paperclips. That's one way to give a hyperefficient paperclip maximizer an existential crisis Congratulations on 400k man!
It's been great watching your channel grow these last three years! Your hard work and dedication are an inspiration, and someday you'll have a million subs! Bravo, sir!
an epic battle of titans, where the fate of galaxies is at stake, only one can win, square or round, on what side will you fight? paperclip wars, coming soon to a cinema near you
The great paperclip wars...... I have to admit, when you I thought Paperclip Maximizer, I thought about a rather boring end of life in the universe: just everything being turned into paperclips...... But it might indeed be a very epic journey! - It's amazing, how there could be novels written about PMs interpreting the original end goal differently, and their philosophies, and wars, and......
So you give us an intrinsic value - instead of "make paperclips" use "sell paperclips to humans" that way it also maximizes our spread through the universe in order to maximize it's customer base ;-)
I'd love to see a dead-serious Star Trek episode, with all the foreboding atmosphere of the Borg episodes, about the crew encountering a wasteland planet, which upon closer inspection turns out to made of paperclips. Soon the enterprise is pursued by a massively powerful interstellar AI civ that has advanced science by lightyears and assimilated dozens of civilizations, all for the purpose of making more paper clips. This hive mind's origins turn out to be even more humble than that of V-GER.
