The parables of the kingdom of heaven; the sower and the different soils
On that day Jesus left the house and sat down by the sea; and a great crowd gathered around him; so he got into a boat and sat down in it; and the whole crowd stood on the shore.
He taught them many things in parables, saying:
«The sower went out to sow.
As he sowed, some of the seed fell along the road; the birds came and ate it.
Another fell in rocky places where it did not have much land; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no deep soil; but, when the sun rose, it was burned; and, having no root, it withered.
Another fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew and choked her. Another fell on the good ground and bore fruit, giving a hundred, sixty, thirty for one.
Whoever has ears, let him hear."
Explanation of the parable of the sower
«You therefore listen to what the parable of the sower means! Every time someone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and takes away what was sown in his heart: this is the one who received the seed along the way.
He who received the seed in rocky places is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, but it has no root in itself and is of short duration; and when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he is immediately led astray.
He who received the seed among the thorns is he who hears the word; then worldly commitments and the deception of riches suffocate the word which remains fruitless.
But he who received the seed in good soil is he who hears the word and understands it; he bears fruit and, thus, one yields a hundred, another sixty and another thirty."
