Imagine you’re on a game show and you can choose between two prizes: a diamond … or a bottle of water. It’s an easy choice - the diamonds are more valuable. But if given the same choice when you were dehydrated in the desert, after wandering for days, would you choose differently? Why? Aren’t diamonds still more valuable? Akshita Agarwal explains the paradox of value.

lol wow... ok.. what he's trying to say is that the video was useless. It's like receiving a 300 pages manual titled: " How to open a bottle of water in 257 easy steps" What was explained is stuff, most people even the most ignorant person could have figured out by themselves without taking econ course in college. Now, people usually tend to feel insulted when you explain extremely simple stuff to them and will think: "Who doesn't know this???? Why is it necessary to explain this???" Now  "Law of diminishing marginal utility return" vs :" People stop eating after they are full" Same idea but hat was the point of naming the phenomenon and giving it that long name and being famous for that??? it's like the author of the book 300 ways to open a water bottle saying: when you twist the top of the water bottle (looks left and right) it opens...( OMG mind blown!!!!) it's called the twist-to-the-right-with-the-right-amount-of-force phenomenon and being remembered 200 years later for that and all his other glorious work such as "how to open a door" and the "how to sit on a chair without falling" and let's not forget the legendary "How to watch tv". Sorry for the sarcasm but I didn't have the choice. Anyways, I think that's what Ben R meant. But yes model can be useful and help planning for projects and decision making.
@Aetheriaa

@Cameron-rf9gt
@Cameron-rf9gt 7 лет назад
I feel like this could be much more easily explained by discussing value through scarcity. The reason diamonds have monetary value is because of how hard they are to obtain compared to something like water (which is everywhere in a developed country). Utility is a factor (since diamonds still would maintain value in a desert), but I think scarcity is still very important to this discussion.
@UshnishChatterjee
@UshnishChatterjee Год назад
Very true!
@moanguspickard249
@moanguspickard249 Год назад
But diamonds only utility (outside of industries) is the agreed value and trade possibility. You buy diamonds because they shkw youre rich and you can resell them. And both are derived from scarcity. Water outside of deserts istn scarce and therefore neither valuable or exchangeable. But scarcity in and of itself isnt that valuable, unless we give it meaning (there are more scarce stuff than diamonds or gold, and conversely paper is not scarce but paper money is)

I noticed that with a lot of big youtubers, the ones that upload daily usually get less views than ones that upload once a month or even less frequently. In this case, I'm using NigaHiga with around 17 mil subscribers and pewdiepie with around 48 mil subscribers. (I know they're incorrect but I'm too lazy to look it up and re-type this). NigaHigas videos are very in-frequent and get almost double the views of pewdiepie a videos despite the subscriber difference. There are exceptions where some daily up loaders still get a ton of views relative to their subscriber count (very active audience). I've also noticed that if you take too long to upload (e.g a year), your "utility" value of your videos goes down as its seen as less relevant.

When the choice was offered every 5 minutes, I chose a diamond first... Which is pretty much what I do in real life. I put investment before myself... I kind of wish they explained what if you didn't choose water first...
@vintjulep414
@vintjulep414 7 лет назад
i'm pretty sure they meant that you didn't know that you would be offered the choice every five minutes, so at first it seems a rarity and you get all the water you can while it lasts (since the endpoint is uncertain)

I would alternate. I would take one bottle of water to drink and then get diamonds until I get thirsty again. Then I would get water again and get diamonds until I'm thirsty again and so on.

There's a couple paradoxes easily pointed out here if you don't think too hard. The paradox is that "value" is normally defined for us, but it is actually us who define the "value" of something, which she said was utility. And then she also basically said that too much of a good thing(such as diamonds or our favorite food no matter how good it is) is a bad thing.

Hi, thanks for the video! It stimulates discussion. But there is no value paradox. When exchanging a commodity for an object of value, the value is assigned to both commodities by both exchange partners. Before the exchange, the two exchange partners usually have different views on the values of the exchange goods. For the exchange, both must agree on a common value within the framework of the value relationship that they enter into with one another. Only when they form a common quantity of value and in this case the needs of both for the commodity and the value equivalent are still large enough for an exchange will an exchange take place. For the exchange, both exchange partners assign this common value to both the goods and the value equivalent. Usually the value equivalent is money. The expenses with which the goods are made available usually have to be replaced by the exchange (in the case of produced things, Marx formulates it with c + v) and a little more has to be paid - an surplus value that the seller considers sufficient (with Marx s) so that production, sales, artistic performance, etc. can be continued, improved and expanded. Likewise, the buyer would like to receive something equivalent in value for the expenses that he needed to work out the required amount of money. When exchanging the diamond in the desert for a bottle of urgently needed water, the only the usual approach to the exchange is deviated from: the owner of the diamond will not insist on being reimbursed for the expenses that he had to purchase the diamond. If both agree on a common value, that is also the value size or the value that both assign to the diamond and the water in this situation. From the large number of exchanges, the average values for diamonds and water can be calculated over time.

1). This is not a paradox.. but sure.. I'll let that slide. 2). Wait what? The graph shows the value of the bottle of water decreasing and the diamonds value increasing. This is incorrect. First off.. the value of the diamond doesn't change. It's relative value changes as the water becomes more or less valuable, as a diamond isn't any more or less useful depending on your location in the desert. 2b) the waters value doesn't change gradually. It doesn't matter how far into the desert you are.. if you need a bottle of water to live, it's value is consistent, if you don't then it may become more gradual due to comfort.. but would dramatically drop below the diamond anyway. Basically.. would you want a bottle of water any less if you were 10 minutes from dying instead of 60? No. No you would not.

the value of diamond NEVER changes. it is the satisfaction of the value of the product that does. and this satisfaction (hypothetically) is measured in utils as given by Alfred Marshall. So, yeah.

I like how in the end the ultimate sources of value and the examples given are not at all related to market value and not subject to diminishing marginal utility. In fact, they're all very communist. They require the valuing of another person instead of thinking about how you can exploit them.

This is also the game of Demand and Supply... At the first time, water has a less supply... That's why it was more valuable than diamond... And the second time, there was enough supply of water and diamond... Therefore demand for Diamond increases too.... According to Dr. Alfred Marshall, " Other things being constant the higher the price a commodity, smaller is the quantity demanded and lower the price of a commodity, larger is the quantity demanded..." The all is briefly explained in his Book, " Principles of Economics"... Also diminishing Marginal Utility needs continuity of consumption, Homogeneity, Single purpose of usage, Constancy etc to satisfy the law....!! SORRY IF I WRONG IN ANYWHERE...
