Did you know that the city of Paramount was once the epicenter of the Southern California dairy and hay industries? It was called both the “world’s largest hay market” and the “milk shed of Los Angeles.” It once had 25,000 dairy cows and sold 32 million dollars worth of hay in one year!!! Learn about that history and the Paramount Hay Tree; one of the last remaining links in the city to that agricultural past and California Historical Landmark No. 1038.
Thank you to the ‪@cityofparamount‬ as well as the Paramount Historical Society for providing historical resources and the photographs used in this video.
Unless otherwise noted, all photographs are courtesy of the City of Paramount and the Paramount Historical Society.

I milked cows @ the Sam Marcus Dairy on Alondra & Garfield in the '70's! Grew up there in Paramount on that dairy, best memories ever!

My grandfather was Garett Van Rys. He was a dairy farmer in Paramount. I don't know a lot about him, but thank you for a little bit of history

You're welcome!! Your grandfather was part of a very important period of history in Paramount; dairies are what made the city!

Back in the late 50s and early 60s I lived in South Gate on Imperial near Garfield. If you went North on Garfield a ways toward Stewart and Gray Road, there was a large field or vacant lot where sewer and storm drain pipes were kept. At the far end there was an area where dairy cattle were kept behind a low wooden fence. You could walk by and pet the cattle at their feeding troughs. On the north side of Stewart and Gray Road was the Rockview Dairy, which also had a retail outlet.

my uncle moved to Paramount in the 60s from Kingston Texas. That's how we ended up in Paramount in the late 70s. In the mid 80s, I would work summers at the Paramount swapmeet from 6:00AM-6:00 PM for $15 bucks for the day.

I’ve heard it said that the swap meet as we know it today started in Paramount. How was it working there?

I'm guessing we drove by there when I was a kid. I recall us driving in the late evening thru some rural area of LA I never saw before and seeing a lot of cows and especially the overwhelming stench of manure. Now I what and where it was.

Yes, you probably drove through the Paramount/Bellfower area. They actually still had cows there up until the 1970s or 80s if I'm remembering correctly. It was the last dairy left in the area and they ended up moving to Chino.

Interesting, next time when I’m around the neighborhood I’ll check out civic center and find out the upcoming farmers festivities.

Yes, please do! They’re also working on opening a museum right next to the Hay Tree.

Long gone the days of agrarian societies. Factory farm raised animals . My grandfather would tell me stories about Monrovia and Duarte and all the citrus 🍊 groves .

I wish I could go back and see the old dairies and citrus fields. It’s hard to picture how massive they were from old photos.
