Always loved this tune. It was part of my musical education in my younger years. Marshall Crenshaw did a live cover of it during his tours in the 80s. I still wonder why George didn't have a hit with this one!
Like George said too much competition at Motown the temps were getting most of the attention because their early struggles and parliament would have to wait in line with the four tops breathing on their back everybody was hungry for a hit George took another direction and the rest is history.
Saw them in Manchester 3 years ago and he was well aware of the northern soul connection and did Testify in the style of The Parliaments. Saw them in Liverpool a year later , the first gig they had done in that northern UK City for 30 years and thought they missed a trick by not honouring another influence e.g. The Beatles but funk it everybody's heard them enough.
