Got a particularly aggressive parrot? One having issues laying eggs? Or a chatty bird driving you up the wall? You don’t have to wing it-call Glenn Sorino for help. He’s been working with birds for 20 years, and he’s seen it all: “Most people think that owning a parrot is a walk in the park, but the truth is: they’re very, very complex creatures in every way.”

Most parrots don’t have any way to tell their gender by looking at it. With cockatoos, females are more likely to have a redder iris than males but it isn’t a way to tell for sure the sex of one. Most birds are dna sexed or surgically sexed. The bird he was holding In the thumbnail is an aclectus parrot and they’re one of the few that can be recognized of sex by their feathers.

But those are treats not like a flipping meal that one lady had to have one over weight bird and birds don't weight a lot.

Birds can eat almost anything, is it good for them? No not always but they can have it in MODERATION. Too much of anything can kill them obviously. People need to introduce their birds to their originally habitats daily diets so like macaws they eat exotic fruits and berries and nuts along the jungle and not peanuts and sunflower seeds cause that's not what they normally eat in the wild. If they arent getting their appropriate diet they get overweight or worse metabolic bone disease.

Dyrelic [GD] That actually could be untrue in some cases For example, one bird I know trusted its owner. Would go out of its cage to fly to her, lay with her in her bed. Eat from her hand. One day her sister was playing with it and the cat got to it. The bird fortunately survived the encounter, but didn’t do the things it used to. She’s still gaining its trust back and now will go on her hand. It is possible to have a birds trust and lose it ^^

This is exactly what I have been telling people! Not only do birds need species diet depending on the species, but also special veterinary care, and birds have different mannerisms and are so emotional and intelligent..and when those mental, emotional, and dietary needs are not met, it often ends in bad behaviors forming, or health issues. As a fellow bird nerd with a bird companion, I try to help people out with info if they need help understanding something, and tell them about my experiences, or a life-hack to make some tasks easier, ect. Found a passion for birds since I was a teen, when I got my first bird (a re-home cockatiel) the rest is history. I'm hooked. One bird is good for now (conure) but in the future I would like to get to a good financial and housing situation to where I could be able to adopt more birds. :) ❤️

@Azure Ablepsia If they have issues with their vent area, you go to the vet. Petting their back will do literally nothing...
@Brownycat
@Brownycat 5 лет назад
@Azure Ablepsia you mean where the cockatoo is hanging upside down in the cage? That still looked like simple petting to me and it's even worse than just petting them on the back. Yeah, a "bird whisperer" doesn't have the necessary knowledge to handle that stuff. And like, everyone can call themselves that and act like they know what they are doing because it's no official job like a dog trainer and such.
@Brownycat
@Brownycat 5 лет назад
@Azure Ablepsia I totally think like you do. Like heck, the only people I'm okay with saying things like that are people, that have studied veterinary medicin as well as animal psychology. I'm also okay with parrot rescue people that work together closely with the kind of vets I mentioned but still I'll be carefull there since there are rescues that claim to know what's best for the bird when in reality they don't but those usually don't work that close with avian vets... I think I heard something about males being okay with being pet on the back and females with the chest but still, I'd rather people stop petting anywhere beneath the neck completly. It's not worth it to risk your parrot becoming sexually frustrated. One of my Senegals had been petted on the back her whole life so when I got her she was a biting, screaming, sexually frustred mess and that's what happens if you keep doing that - it's not okay. It took me around half a year to stop that and that was no fun, I tell ya'
@Brownycat
@Brownycat 5 лет назад
@Azure Ablepsia I certainly did a lot wrong at first, too but you are right, that's excatly why we should always continue to do research, even if you think you know it all. Even vets and "experts" should since we figure out more and more about animals every day, especially about their psychology. You can never stop learning with animals and more people need to realise that. My female Senegal is the only one who let's me pet her from 8 birds in total. Three budgies aren't tamed at all, the 4. only comes on your hand if she feels like it, my two scarlet-chested aren't tame either and my male Senegal will come to me on command but if I dare pet him, he either looks at me as if I completly disrespected his personal bubble, or he will try to warn bite me (he's parentraised so he's quite gentle and respectful about that - unlike my handraised female lol) or he will just straight up fly away. Some just don't like it, it's something we also need to respect and learn about :')

My 2-cents on parrot interactions: 1. They’re wild. Always have been, always will be. Don’t have to always be afraid, just ALWAYS be respectful of this. 2. The beak is multipurpose. Used for opening seeds, for climbing... and, yes, as a weapon (defensive and offensive). 3. Their brains are hard-wired to socially be part of a flock. They need to know where other flock members are. A lonely bird may be calling, and calling, and calling. Nature adapted them for the call to be heard for long distances in thick canopies, among other places. To a human may seem very irritating. To a lonely parrot, needs to know if it’s flock members are close by = less stress. Sometimes just calling back gives them piece of mind. You have a social obligation as having been accepted into their flock. I like to call for them, too, from another room from time to time, just to ensure they are fulfilling their side of the flock obligation. They call back, and then it’s done. The more lonely the parrot is, the more the human has to participate in the flock. 4. They REALLY respond to emotion. Anger from the human will illicit defense (fear-anger) from them. If they do something I don’t like, I try to respond with sadness and fake tears and sad voice. Usually they immediately try to make me feel better; it’s uncanny and bad habits decrease in frequency. If they do something I like, I try to respond with positive voice, maybe sing-song rhythm, bob my head up and down, and maybe even flap arms like wings depending on the intensity of the interaction. Emotion easier to understand than spoken language, especially when there is no commonly “understood” spoken language. Think of traveling to a country that speaks a language foreign to you. 5. They don’t have hands. They don’t always remember that humans use hands to interact. In a dicey situation, they will default to their wild instinct (see ‘1’ above) and interpret hands / fingers coming towards them as a threat, offensive weapon. Put yourself in their shoes. Imagine you were held prisoner by a larger animal (bear). The bear feeds you, let’s you out of the cage from time to time, handles you, etc., etc. If the bear had an interaction that was unusual to you, and then it tried to pick you up with it’s claws, how would you interact? (¡yikes! A lot of stress for the smaller animal.) 6. Great way to bond is just to be there. Don’t always have to handle. Sometimes I will just sit next to the cage for 10 to 15-minutes, and silently watch. They can see me, so don’t have to call for me from another room... it’s usually not a loud interaction. Actually, I get a lot of insight about their personality from this. 7. Don’t mess with a nesting hen while she’s taking care of her eggs. She may still interact with you during this time, just don’t force anything. She’ll let you know what is acceptable and what is unacceptable.

So just from this video I can't tell what kind of methods this guy uses or what he teaches (fresh veggies looked great tho!), but if he's out there helping birds the right way I'm all for it 👍😁 Another great husband and wife team that have helped thousands (including myself) is BirdTricks. It's because of them that I have the life that I do with my babies (my channel is mainly on Tango who they helped me with on free flight). Their channel has hundreds of videos to help bird owners out there :) Love that the word is getting out that birds are not a cakewalk!! They require so much attention, space, and patience 💙💛

@bitteralmonds5717
@bitteralmonds5717 5 лет назад
@Ashley Batres I mean you probably were shouting shut up to the bird first lol. Birds do yell at 4am, or basically whenever first light is. Think of the "dawn chorus" and then think that parrots have to scream loud enough to be heard for some distance in a jungle. Put the cage somewhere where you can block out all light in a room at night (thick blinds, get rid of any LED lights in there with electrical tape) and that will help somewhat with the 4am screaming. (Be careful not to put something too dense on top of the bird cage so the poor thing doesn't suffocate). Otherwise there are plenty of resources for training strategies for screaming birds online, but often you will have to just sometimes accept it because that is literally what they do from time to time.

I am the proud owner of an Umbrella Cockatoo. I have had her for 48 years now and we adore each other. Knowing what I know now, I firmly believe that other than small parrots who have a life expectancy of less than 15 years, all parrots should not be sold as a pet. Most owners don't have the time, money or the lifetime investment to make in this incredibly bright animal. Too many of these birds end up in terrible conditions and they are very emotionally invested in their owners. Please do not buy a parrot unless you can plan what to do with that magnificent friend when you die, have to move, get married and the bird hates your human partner, etc.
