I am a 57 year old German and still love this song. I was brought up by my grandfather who was born 1912 and fought in WWII, not voluntarily. One day in France he and another soldier ventured out of the camp, without their weapons, to climb a mountain as they both were keen mountaineers. Halfway up the mountain they encountered members of the Maquis who could have easily (and understandably) killed my grandfather and his friend but they didn't. Instead, they were a group of like minded mountaineers and talked. I am forever grateful as otherwise I wouldn't be here...
A 95 years old partisan died yesterday. His name was Nello Bracalari, from Grosseto, Italy. In a confused country, amidst a surrendered people, he still carried on to look at the future with hope and courage, until the last days. May he be an example to younger generations.
It hurts to hear this song. I remember my parents showing respect when they heard this song. They were occupied for 5 years, living in the Netherlands. Partisans are, to this day, some of the most beautiful people, no matter the country they live in. Vive le Maquis. August 2023
I wish I could have played it for my mother who lived through it in Hoensbroek in the Maastricht dst . . simple things they treasured (and kept hidden) . . My father was stationed there, met her and brought her home (US) after the war
My grandfather is Australian, and not a partisan, but he also fought with their bravery and virtues in WW2 to help ensure freedom and a better world. He’s also still alive and turning 100 this year ❤
So he was allied with the Soviets and other democratic/republican countries fighting the democratically elected Austrian painter in republican Germany and their allies. Where do you find freedom in today's world? Were you free during the illness, or a prisoner in your home? Do you get to choose what to do with your income, or do your owners decide that most of it should be used for a higher purpose? Are you raising your children or do your owners have a higher goal for them? Freedom is being able to choose and that freedom died with the First World War and the democratic takeover.
@@MrGunnar69The shitbird Hitler whom you are referring to, won 1election in Germany. In 1933 he seized power after the Nazis burned down the Reichstag, at which time German ceased being a democratic country. Freedom died after the first world war - you do know there was no freedom before that, all people were bound to serve the so called upper class. Read a history book you f@#king idiot.
@@MrGunnar69Germany stopped being a democratic country after the Nazis burned down the Reichstag in 1933. The new powers give to Hitler & his Nazis allowed them to ban elections and to size power permanently. This song brings tears to my eyes. My grandfather was in the resistance in Paris and he got killed by the Germans. My father had to raise himself and survive the war at 14 yrs. old. Thank you for sharing this song.

Bullshit comments for a great Greetings. Geografija je nevazna. Unimportant where partisans come from. Its all about underdog fighting against a bitch ass imperial mfs. Commies or not...all of us have a partisans soul. If we recognize it...
In loving memory of mister Henri Poirson , a french resistant I met twenty-five years ago . He was asked in 1942 by his boss to help some fugitives to go through the german lines , in the Vosges . Henri simply answered "Yes" , without consider risks for himself or his family . He was caught by the Nazis soon in the year 1944 and sent first to Natzweiler-Struthof , then Dachau . He survived because he had some friends (real life companions) who gave him some part of their poor eating... When Henri , who was really tall , came back home in his Vosgian village , his weight was less than 45 kg... The first time I met this gentle man at my job , I immediatly saw a tattoed number on one of his arms . Shy , I asked him what was that tattoo . So he explained me calmly what he did during Second World War . Since then , I really loved to talk with him ! He could speak about every subject with wisdom and humility . I miss him since the end of 2017 ... :'(
That's so touching a story ,, so many ppl where so brave then ,if it where now ,,we r lost no heroes left that I can think of ,except those that r no longer with us Blessings to him and all the others ,I had uncles in WW2 and one was only 12 but big 4 age so he lied and joined after he ran away to go defeat Hitler ,, he was presumed dead ,my grandmother had second sight ,she calmly told to soldier that came out to tell her her son was dead, or mia, she told him ,he was gonna b home soon ,they thought she was crazy ,second sight and all but sure nuff about 6 weeks after he was found ,someone was caring for him ,, saved his life he was badly burned ,but grandma had a salve she made my wise granny ,, she was part native American and she told us things should not have known ,,but this was the story we heard most often,, ty 4 sharing and good to meet you my friend
I played this for my mum, she was in tears, I didn't mean for that reaction, but she lost 3 uncles fighting for the resistance, another uncle was awarded Legion deHoneurre, again for the resistance

My mom's father was a partisan, fighting Nazi Germans. He fell in April 1945. My father's dad was also a partisan, he survived the WW2. They were brave and descent men and fought against opression andf terror. I try to be worthy of them every single day.

The Partisan. When they poured across the border I was cautioned to surrender This I could not do I took my gun and vanished. I have changed my name so often I've lost my wife and children But I have many friends And some of them are with me An old woman gave us shelter Kept us hidden in the garret Then the soldiers came She died without a whisper There were three of us this morning I'm the only one this evening But I must go on The frontiers are my prison Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing Through the graves the wind is blowing Freedom soon will come Then we'll come from the shadows Les Allemands étaient chez moi Ils me dirent, "résigne toi" Mais je n'ai pas peur J'ai repris mon âme J'ai changé cent fois de nom J'ai perdu femme et enfants Mais j'ai tant d'amis J'ai la France entière Un vieil homme dans un grenier Pour la nuit nous a caché Les Allemands l'ont pris Il est mort sans surprise Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing Through the graves the wind is blowing Freedom soon will come Then we'll come from the shadows

Homage to Leonard & to those lost in the war. His voice, lyrics, poetry, bring tears in my eyes. What a life he lived & what a bliss he brought to so many. RIP in the heavens of music.
Cohen - you sing for me when the life is too hard, too dark. I love your songs ever since a car- journey all alone over the mountains in august 1973. When I am sad, I listen to Cohen. When I am driving alone, I listen to Cohen. The best companion ever. Never stop singing for me, Leonard Cohen.

Great song. Written by A. Marly and d'Astier de la Vigerie for French Resistance, those who save the honour of my country. Leonard has made a universal anthem for the courageous who resist again oppression everywhere now, yesterday, tomorrow. Cohen is a great poet and is still living thanks to his fabulous poetic songs

My mothers’ parents were partisans both having escaped first from Falangist Spain then Vichy French concentration camps to join the maquis. As a child she sang me to sleep with songs from the resistance. Songs like this one.
I am Polish , and this song reminds me of thousands of Polish boys in their 20 who died fighting German and Russian oppressors. Where I come from, in every cemetery there are partisans mass graves. Every time I look at those rows of names I think about those young lives that have been cut so short.

My father was only 14 when his English teacher asked to join the Résistance in1943. The same year from the same beach in Plestin les Grèves François Mitterand was joining the General De Gaulle not in London but in Alger. My father was tortured. All the adults were killed. The Francs-Tireurs et Partisans Français[a] (FTPF), or commonly the Francs-Tireurs et Partisans (FTP), was an armed resistance organization created by leaders of the French Communist Party during World War II (1939-45). The communist party was neutral at first, following the Soviet Union's official view that the war was a struggle between imperialists, but when Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941 changed to a policy of armed resistance against the German occupation of France. Three groups were formed, consisting of party members, young communists and foreign workers. Early in 1942 they were merged to form the FTP, which undertook sabotage and assassinations of the occupation. The FTP became the best organized and most effective of the French Resistance groups. In March 1944, before the Allied forces returned to Normandy, the FTP was theoretically merged with the other Resistance groups. In practice, it retained its independence until the end of the war.

My grandfather was a partisan in Belarus in WW2 and fought against the German invaders. He did not want to talk much about this time, because it was indescribably terrible. Everything was not only black and white. There are no saints in the war.
As I type this, on March 8, 2022, the song may be more timely now than at any time since World War II. Thank you so much, aszad, for posting this brilliant version.
Two years ago , I couldn't imagine my testimony about mister Henri Poirson would have such a huge echo throughout the world .
This is a brilliant video creation; the emotion-charged lyrics, Leonard Cohen's enchanting voice, the masterful Spanish guitarist, is here enhanced by the editing and blending of multiple recorded clips taken of several performances, all in ghost-like black-and-white, shadowy style.
From one very small village in Macedonia a small batallion of Macedonian Partisans fought off the Germans in WW2 to take back there village. My mum witnessed this as a small girl.
There's something strong in his harmonies. They'v touch my soul all along my life as many souls all over the world. I'm from France and i knew my neibourgh since a long time until i discovered she was a fan of Leonard Cohen too. Here "Suzanne"'s song is even more popular than this song because there's something strong in the music and we feel some kind of strong poetry even if very few people understand the lyrics. I saw Leonard in the 80th at a bad punk festival were they shouted at him not even knowing who he was, he was really in a bad situation. He could stand on some us because he saw some of us who knew his songs. Kept him confident. Fortunatly he had his revival. And this live session is really amazing with these strong musicians.
