Irish tension is a band over the flyer shaft (like the standard louet ) in a bobbin driven wheel. Scotch is a line around the bobbin in a flyer driven wheel. I really like the irish tension for art yarn because you can lay a finger on the band to really yank the yarn in when you are ready. Sometimes if you have the high tension needed to draw in thick yarn, or on a full bobbin, it can get very hard to treadle.
I thought you showing off your wheels was fantastic, it gave me a really good idea of the one I'd like to maybe get next, as I have a kiwi 3 and a Haldane saxony style which needs a referb but I'm still quite new to spinning so watching anyone else explain it all the in and outs of the wheels they have, I think is the perfect way to hopefully end up with my own dream wheel, not that the kiwi 3 isn't lovely and or work well as it does do both, but as you oviousily know spinning and wanting to have all the gadgets an that is so addictive, but at least it's a healthy one 👍for showing off your lovely beautiful wheels
My beautiful wheel is a Saxony. I got it 2nd hand, it's handmade from solid oak and you really won't be moving it about much! Getting it in the car to bring it home and out again was a proper British pantomime. My husband once tried to get our then cat, Suzi a Blue Persian, to stand on the single treddle. I understand her look was "Daddy if you want someone to 'play' on it, get yourself a guinea pig!" Thank you for your very interesting video about your wheels.
I am so glad I listened to your podcast. I live somewhere I don't have access to other wheels, this was very informative. It's also cool to meet someone who doesn't like to spin lace or fingering weight either. i spin what I use, and I don't use either of those. And the woolie winder feels like it's taking away part of my experience, lol.

Cardboard or plastic storage bobbins plus a bobbin winder are a great option to avoid buying lots of expensive bobbins for each wheel. Check in a weaving supply website/store.
Hi, I don’t know whether you get notified when someone comments, and I doubt you’d come back for any other reason, but I couldn’t catch the name of the German wheel, the 4th one. I listened at slow speed, to both times you say the name, something like Michi von Sprachsenstein, but that’s not right, however the transcript doesn’t do any better! Any ideas anyone? I think the tension is fascinating

this was SO interesting. noe I an put a picture to some of the wheels I hear others are using. I have a Kromski Minstrel myself. i don't think it is very pretty but is #spins very well. thanks for the info
I would like a wheel, but need to save more money. Went to buy a wheel prior to Covid and the store manager talked me out of their lowest cost beginner wheel. She said I would be limited on what I could do on it (want fingering, but an assortment of yarn weights is ideal). The next wheel is $800. Covid hit my husband's business hard, so for now I will knit and dream. I've never spun, took a 1 hour class, but that's it. Honestly the class made me cry, as I didn't even manage to get the wheel turning right. Sigh. Someday. Thank you for showing us yours.
If you are in the US, try to find a local guild and borrow a wheel first. Once you are feeling good about your spinning, you can get great used wheels from guilds and on Ravelry forums. You don’t have to invest $800 to get started. My first wheel was used and cost €120. It was perfect and I spun on it for several years before passing it on to another newbie spinner. If you can find a guild, there are some shop that will rent wheels out, too. Good luck!

Angelica 626 Rico I loved my Kiwi! But it was the very first version and I didn’t want to invest in different flyers to give it an upgrade. In my opinion it’s a great beginner yarn and perfect if you just want to spin “normal” yarns. But without the bulky flyer and bobbins it’s not very suitable for spinning art yarn. And I really wanted I give that a go. So I sold it.
They are both great wheels. I think it depends on how often you want to take it with you to events. But I’m not sure how the newer Kiwi is built. I had one 15 years ago. Much has changed since.

You mentioned that the Rose spins hard yarn. Can the Rose spin soft stretchy yarn as well? Can you explain what type of yarns you other wheels spin? Can't you explain what the best and worst feature of all your wheels are/is? Thank you 🙏🏻
4vrceltic I think the problem with the hard yarn from the Rose is more user error than anything else. I haven’t used it all too often and therefor don’t know yet how to change the tension and uptake to produce the yarn I really like. The other wheels do the type of yarn I want them to do. In the end, it’s all up to the spinner to make it work. As for best/worst: I don’t have any real complaints about any of my wheels. When I found a problem with a wheel, I sold it to someone else. And normally the new owner didn’t have any problems. I hope this helps.
Have you ever tried the Schact Matchless Spinning Wheel?! I hear that that and the Majacraft Aura are the top Pinnacle Spinning Wheels in the industry. I would love it if you could ever do a review on these two Wheels. 🙏🤞🏼👌🏼🙂

owl pool Mainly from experience. I know how much yarn or how many meters I usually need for a sweater in my size. And when I spin yarn for a sweater I usually spin 200 grams more than I would get if I bought already finished yarn. That way, I have a bit of room for inconsistent spinning or shrinkage after washing the finished yarn.

I have a Majacraft Rose 12 years ago and my instructor loved this wheel. Taking lesson again and really want a wheel that is portable and overwhelmed with which I want. Any suggestions? Liked the Spinolution and Gem. Heard about Lendrum, Ashford and Hobeybee. Watched utube also on Pioneer but price high for me. Help.
Susan Holton Portable makes a cheaper wheel difficult. I really like my Ashford Joy. If it doesn’t have to fold down, I think the Woolmakers Bliss is a great wheel.
Hello, thank you! Yes, I’ve just had a look on their website, and I see the wheel is called Michi. It’s ingenious. But unfortunately they only sell within Germany and I’m in the U.K. I’ve been intrigued by a tensioning system shown by Robin DuBois on RU-vid, (Google the name and RU-vid and it comes up) - it’s an espinner, and like this one, the flier is behind the spool, and so he can wind his yarn around the arm of the flier before it passes to the orifice, and this is like laced threading. It’s a capstan friction system. There’s a little knob to stop the yarn coming off the end of the flier arm. Well, it’s possible this wheel could also use a capstan winding system to help achieve even tension. He says he was hoping to patent it, but he’s gone quiet. I hope he’s alright!
