Corrections: • Entries regarding Einhar's "not having nets" line and the betrayal league allegory is unclear if it's coincidental or not. • At 7:17:56 of Day 1 of the Exilecon 2023 livestream, Matt confirmed the connection of Alva and The Last to Die. • I completely forgot about the Ambush skill gem as that is more functionally similar to the Backstab skill gem compared to Nightblade support. Updates to Entries: • Well, the boat league entry aged like milk. We now got Settlers of Kalguur and it is GOATED! • Ultimatum has now returned as of patch 3.23.
I always treated the "not having nets" line just an inside joke to people that played the bestiary league and had to manage all their nets (and spend all their alch orbs to get them) ... but yeah I could see it having double meaning for those hearing it for the first time with no other reference frame Neat video. Nice walk down memory lane.
the einhar line is 100% confirmed to be a stab at diablo immortal. they added that line specifically to him when he returned as a permanent master in 3.5 which was shortly after the immortal debacle. the voiceactor actually had to come back to the studio to do the line so it made the cut in time
I haven't watched the whole video yet, but I wanted to jot this note down now, in case I forget later...The name of the world where the game takes place is an Old English word. Specifically, the word is found in the poem called "The Wanderer" (written around 600AD) which is found in the Exeter Book. The word "Wraeclast" translates into modern English as "Path of Exile".
i feel these are mostly all pretty surface level stuff. You need actual deeper stuff like GCP recipe hoarding, Baked Chicken speed meta, totem crash exploit, etc
Very cool video. Interesting additions could be the hidden "Insanity"-Modifier, which is for example granted by Innsbury Edge. This buff makes crypic stuff happen, like random deleveling messages or heartattacks (This buff is not to be confused with the Insanity-Buff from Doppelgänger Guise). Other fun stuff would be Kiwihalt or the April Fool's Joke where they switched "Cast on Death" to "Cats on Death" due to a Typo.
The thing that truly sets poe apart for me is that GGG truly has a Vision for the game, maybe their execution isn't always good, maybe I don't like their choices in certain aspects, but I recognize that they have a real vision for the game. As long as they have a vision I will keep coming back
Their vision was great until the Expedition nerfs, AN update, and Harvest nerf. Since then it seems all they want to do is make stuff more RNG and more one-shot bs because not enough people play ruthless in Chris' eyes. After playing Wolcen and D4 and seeing how slow ARPGs just don't work, I have worries about PoE2 just based on what we have seen, hopefully, they get the balance right and we can zoom zoom by the end game. That is the only gauge of player power and how you skew the low drop rates of ARPGs to be more in favor, aka kill more mobs filter to get more rolls of the dice in the same amount of time.
@@totallynottrademarked5279 worst was Delve. Because Delve promised to finally be a great alternative to both leveling and mapping, the two most repetitive problem areas of the game, but in order to level from Delve you needed to be up to date on depth vs. level and to map for sulphite. It was a mind-bogglingly stupid and unnecessarily restrictive decision. It's like they never take a step back and ask themselves "WHY should we restrict this?" they just do it as some sort of reflex even when it has zero influence on the economy or player power.
Molten Strike used to be one of the strongest melee skills in the game, they changed it to only produce molten balls on hit because you could attack the ground with Ancestral Call support and it would double the number of balls you could produce versus a single target. The wildfire gem being unrestricted, and with Increased AoE and multistrike you would be hitting the target hundreds of times in short succession, which paired with a life gain on hit claw, gave you some of the best regen available. Near immunity to anything but one-shots. A popular build was using the shield Lycosidae to cover your accuracy on a Inquisitor which would ignore the enemies fire resistances. The sheer amount of numbers the build put out was actually straining the servers, hence the back to back nerfs over multiple patches/expansions, even after it fell out of the top meta builds, which lead to it being a bit of a community meme.
funny to see it is still an existing skill, especially in the latest league when scaling projectiles is easier and with sources of multitargeting not limited to ancestral call.
Yay someone who doesn't like this Quin poser style ! That alone earned a sub from me ;-) Awesome marathon video man, this must have been a ton of work !
Man Bex was a real one. One of the best CMs I have ever seen in any game. Also, ward is completely insane, it is key to one of the best builds in the game in wardloop, but it's more used as a resoruce than defense.
She hasn't done anything in the last few years, absolutely zero interaction with the players. I was surprised when I found out that she was still working at GGG (when she announced her dismissal).
@@ЕгорКорин-ч2б Well yes she was promoted to the director of the department she was in instead of being a community manager/community support. Directors don't typically directly interact with the playerbase 24/7
On that last part, I have two comments. One, players almost never know what they want/what they'd enjoy the most, or what's best for the game they play. People legitimately don't know what's "good" until "good" is right in front of them, materialized and delivered by artists and designers with a strong vision. A strong vision from developers with the strength to know WHEN to ignore and even push back against the wrong type of feedback is needed for a game to succeed in the long term. And two, the PoE subreddit is a toxic dumpster that should be avoided at all costs and their participants not listened to. Good video!
Thank you for the video! First time I remember seeing the boat league meme is, in teaser season for Heist, iirc, pretty early on Bex posted a boat-related image (because the Heist hub is Rogue Harbor, where we arrive by boat), and people went extremely wild with the speculation. For some reason, the idea of a boat-based league was incredibly funny, and fun to brainstorm.
If my memory isn't too foggy it was a happy little accident, because Chris mentioned in a Beaclast around Betrayal that the league had the planned name "Immortals" and at some point they scrapped it because the aren't really immortal and the betrayal is more prominent. I am just not too sure anymore because it has been a minute and there was sooo much that happened in the game over the years :3
Let's be honest, they is nothing betrayous about the Betrayal content, they just renamed it to surf on the negative Diablo hype. This is the league which name took me the longest to memorize because I had no context for it.
@@oneoranota Well if they wanted to surf the negative diablo hype then they would have stuck to "Immortal" since the Syndicate is immortal, like Catarina keeps reminding us all the time while fighting her. If we are honest then noone knows for sure and the statement we got is "It used to be immortal and then they went Betrayal since the Forsaken Masters now betrayed the Exiles" and that is about it. Everything other than the official statement of Chris during one of the older Baeclasts, at I think this was where he said it, would be speculation.
The video is immensely good. Great respect for the effort!. GGG has listened to the community a lot, they don't have to listen to everything the community whines about because we will end up with WoW type of problem - a game made for p*ss*es. Great job on covering so much of the game. I only wish you included a segment about GGG rewriting the game to fix performance. Back in the day the game used to load for 10 minutes on pressing start in steam (literally, not an exaggeration, sometimes even longer). At some point when GGG landed on their feet financially they decided to do something about it (I believe we had only 3 acts at the time, maybe 4). Developers even made reddit threads to get feedback from different people with all kinds of hardware. It was at that point that we knew they were serious about getting things right. I'm one of many people who's spent a lot of money on the game. And not because I needed to, but because I wanted to support the game as much as I was able to afford. And I still don't regret a single cent spent in Path of Exile. Thank you Chris. Keep on following your vision. Sometimes it's shit, sometimes it's godlike. But Babies will always complain either way.
Oh, and another thing - in the early years of the game the community got a reputation of people who are generally more willing to help than to be toxic. As the game got more popular all kinds of people came around, but we still have some great players if you know where to look. I always try to help others and explain as much as I know. Recently I spent few hours helping out a 60 year old grandpa learn the game and I dare say he's better than many young people I've seen play the game.
51:00 Just about every big chinese company is associated with the chinese government, that is completely normal. Monopolistic practices are a much bigger problem with them.
Gotta agree with the sentiments re: Quin69. Not my kind of attitude. Most recently I saw his reactions and "reporting" during ExileCon, shaking down other creators for negative commentary toward the PoE2 trials. He seems to be a sensationalist sort of creator, what I think of as "Cortisol Pumpers." But I have a limited view due to avoiding his content, so take that for what you will.
He's a literal caricature of himself (of a Bogan kiwi / Bogan = white trash), he plays it up hard to be the heel (a lightening rod for memes ect~) it's 100% on purpose and he means no harm.
dude. thank you for your effort in this video. really appreciate watching someone going through the history and experiences of the game, made for a great watch :)
I think it should also be said about harvest how over the top the crafting prices at the start were when they changed it to lifeforce that they had to reduce some to 10 % of the orginal cost.
I generally don't like iceberg videos for whatever reason, but this was really entertaining and interesting. I agree on the last fact - GGG must do something right with their vision/philosophy and the way they interact with us players. Why do I say that? This game is still around and going strong after ten years, having survived D3, several other hyped ARPGs andd it really looks like it will survive D4. Maybe even PoE2, who knows ;)
Nice video, it seems like a lot of stuff covered is relatively new. Some deep cuts about the OG community members and events like the Charan debacle, kripp's priceless stash, Ruler of Wraeclast supporter pack, and the mors vs cybrix meltdown would be interesting.
I was so happy when I heard that PoE2 will be a separate game. It gave me a huge sigh of relief to know that GGG still could understand or realise that their audiences are so fragmented that merging PoE1 into 2 will be the worst thing that happens after OW2.
They're still sharing an end game. So I'm not sure how they're not going to be merged in some way. The atlas system is still supposed to be shared between them. How that might work, no idea.
What is the song do you have playing in the background during the final segment of the video? I thoroughly enjoy the entire video, thank you for making this! It's very well-made
Genuinely liked the video, I listened to the whole thing while blasting maps, went from 37% to 89% at level 96 in ssf. One thing I was kind of hoping you would mention would be the level 100 fame. Either in the racing or the vision aspect as GGG has a fine stance on level 100 race as well as softcore death xp, nerfing xp strats, nerfing how much xp is needed multiple times since the very first level 100. Also, side note since I know it wasn't mentioned audibly no clue maybe you showed some footage but the old school events were super fun I loved the pvp events and I forget what it was called but it kind of reminded me of sanctum where you started a run got random generated loot and had to push as hard as you could before it reset and then the fastest time or furthest was the winner. I completely forget the nuisances I just remember vivid memories of hanging out in a teamspeak server, yeah that old... and having good laughs at everyone sharing the chaos of some of these old school racing events. These little innovated designs early on in the game cemented ggg as a developer for me and I've been playing every league for at least the first couple days (talismans was the first league I noped out of super quick) since warbands. And speaking of warbands the league mechanics used to be separate to hardcore/softcore ladder and then they are kind of doing similar redesign now with ruthless/base game having their own balance. Maybe we'll get ruthless league's but I doubt it lol.
I'm glad someone likes custom sounds as much as I do. Nearly everything in my filter has a custom sound so that I can identify whatever drops, I must have 100+ sounds at the moment and it just keeps growing!
Amazing Video! This was fun learning about the lore and the background of some of the items! I remember the loot nerf in Kalandra League vividly, did a lot of heist like many others. Never forget :) I recommended this to a friend that just started since Crucible League. Curious to hear his thoughts, must be mind blown with the amount of mechanics we've had in the game.
I loved Kalandra and Expedition league. No matter the nerfs and the community outrage, I had some of my best builds and most enjoyable moments during those 2 leagues :)
No we all have not being there , the passive tree is what solidified me the moment i saw it to play the game :D HH recently got massivly buffed to 60 sek it use to be 20 and its not as fun item as it looks , deff unique Path of building is fun to watch numbers , but at some point when you learn the game and you dont care about numbers cuz you know how your builds get their dmg - its meh We miss you Bex :D Best League - Synthesys ( but the hoardiiiiiing was insane , i mean its not for everyone) Talisman was fun , it introduced interesting challanges by giving exiles random powerups and exiles were harder back then , also first league with actuall League Challanges I love the orb switch - Exalted should be used , divine is so much less usefull (beside me rerillong timeless jewels back in the day) also gives higher rolled items more value when you cant easily reroll them . I love the Vission , GGG made a game i love and i play all year , its an phrase escape for people . I dont care what the majority wants , i see all are keep on playing and havinga blast , SO THE VISION IS WORKING and you are whining about nurfs that are healthy for the overall game .
Nice video, regarding the exa / div swap, I would also add that the community figured out legion jewels at the time and divine are needed to reroll them. That was a hot topic
I started poe about 2 years ago on Kalandra league. I went in blind and learned and built my own build and reached maps. When i saw the atlas skill tree, my mind was blown. You mean there is a skill tree to customize and get control over the rng nature of the content that pops up. That was exactly when the game was sold to me. Nowadays i don't play it much because of how much of a time sink the game is and I can't play so many timesinks while still holding a full time job and try to have a life. I would love to come back to play poe again though.
Sometimes I click out from subbed channel to main YT site .. and oh boy.. this was a good catch. Amazing video to hear while playing 3.22 :) It was so fun to ride that nostalgia train. Thank you for this.
The extremely large and complex skilltree, the confusing/complex gem and crafting system was what turned me off from this game after less than 1 hour of playing it. If I had so much time to spent on reading/collecting knowledge/experimenting for a game I would prefer to use that time to acquire knowledge (like metaphysics/mystical/esoteric) for (if possible) real life application. It is obviously a very good game but not accesible for the vast majority of working people.
After playing LE extensively last week, I always feel something is off, something is not there... It would be too long to describe in one yt comment. Simply put, I have to say the Vision is true. You don't appreciate your normal food enough until you try UK food.
Exile crimes: Everyone but: *I have my own burderns... depth's and consequences from my actions which I shall redeem in wraeclast* Duelist: *Lmfao noble talked shit so I shanked em, worth!*
I really hope that they take the hardcore complexity out in PoE2. I have one LVL 73 character. Every time I want to play again and start a new char I look at a few YT videos and then close the game. That skill tree is not fun if you want something you can use for a fun play through.
Speaking of reusing assets, one of the TOTA chieftains , namely Kahuturoa is using the same moveset as Blackjaw boss that killed Mark during poe2 presentation. Check for yourself if you dont belive me ;p
some people might say jungroan is for sure bait build ... im 100% sure he can do uber elder on 3link ,meanwhile i cant even complete campaign on 3link some of the content creators are just so good at the game , they dont even need gear to clear all content .. is crazy also for the question "is the feared the hardest content" , answer is "no" i tihnk im not crazy good at the game, but i can clear anything and the only thing that is true dps and skill check is uber searing exarch.. this fight is imo the hardest thing in the game
1:26:00 A large benefit of the 3rd party tools is, I can have them on my 2nd monitor or just work with them without having to open the game or be held back by maintanence, etc. I dont see much profit in having an entire tool built into the game. Because at that point, ask yourself how many tabs and menus are you fine with having in your game until it is too much? Some people play PoE casually. They already have enough to worry about with the giant skill tree. Having a menu as complex as a plane cockpit may not be a wise addition to the game. And how would you even decide which tools to add? Maybe you only use a trade, build and sth else tool. But what about x or y or z? Would we ignore the people that want those tools, just beause the part of the community using it is small? This gets tricky to manage. I'd say some annoyances that every single player has to deal with would be better off solved in a different way. Most 3rd party tools are QoL workarounds. Being able to trade your currency automatically with other people, skipping the 1:1 interaction or sth sth sth would probably remove the need for many trade tools. What about builds? Why not have popular current and past lague build recommendations inside the game under a "community" tab? There you get recommended gems, tips as to what works with what and so on. That would also teach new players details like what is a spell, what is a "hit" what is a "over time" etc. It would be imo more profitable for everyone to have people become smarter over just following a build guide blindly, not knowing why it works.
I can't believe of all the stuff he mentioned in the Chinese version the browser is what he wants. To not alt tab. Not the death recap to know why the hell you died, which can't be achieved in any way. Not the quick trading so you don't have to sleep in hideout. Nope. A browser. Oh and a skill tree planner. GIMME A DEATH RECAP GODDAMMIT JUST THE DAMAGE TYPE OR SOMETHING DKSHDKHDKH By the way, I love that throughout the video the templar keeps getting better and better gear for the title bits. lol
Unless common pet for currency is a campain reward, I dont want it to be sold: It will inflate currency market, with everyone who bought it getting extra profit. On the other hand, a pet which filters rare stuff to pick up is just a loot filter which makes a click for you, nothing serious.
Great video, I have been playing Since PoE had the 3 difficulties. Buddy and me still joke about the Touch of God when you had to kill him 3 different times. Also I believe you forgot to mention the big Desync issues they had early on. This is what kept me away from the early leagues cause it had lots of rubberbanding with server code.
Yeah, I forgot about the server issues in the earlier years. There was a random chance when entering an instance that it would just kick me out. That and the rubberbanding at other times.
Two points: Trade (suggested by substractem) is still way worse than how normal trade should work (you put item in your sell stash, for some price, somebody search that and just click "accept the offer", which will immediatelly take currency from his tab and exchange it for item he wanted). As simple as that and ggg still cant figure that out. Current state of trade is absolutely ridiculous, its mechanics like from 90´s. Look for example at trade in Eve Online. And about Path of Math, would be nice to also share the other side view, not just ggg. + ggg got all the time huge issues with bots and bot detection. I wouldnt be too far If I say that over 50% of trades I did this league was with bots. How ggg are so unable to recognize bot? Howso other games can do it? I would say: ggg, less mtx, more care about actual gameplay please. We dont need 5 different mtx for determination aura, if you instead make proper trade, everybody would be happier.
Biggest nerf to player power according to me : - 3.0 => removal of double dipping (this was actually healthy for the game, dev did the right thing, but the 3.0 league was very hard as a consequence) - 3.9 => Introduction of Sirus, he was busted, and the dev declared "not every player will be able to clear endgame content and it's ok". I quit the game because of this shit.
what i never understand about poe players is how isnt this addressed: ZOOM OUT FEATURE???????????? people think its perfectly ok that someone cant see 3 meters north or south of them? i think even the 20 meters east or west is too short... but com on, let us zoom out. in Ancestor's league they tease us with a slight zoom out after you win...god wouldn't that even be amazing, i know they can do it. also death recaps, but zoom out's absence is game breaking.
trading is 100% fine, if someone doesnt reply, just offer them more. cant get a trade for 1c, message and say "ill give u 5c for it since i know ur busy to make it worth ur time" and 99% of the time people will actually trade it. the best trading fix would be a NPC that wears your mtx that stands in your hideout and sells stash tab worth of gear, so you need to refill him but people can buy from him easily if u make trading too easy, the game will die
1. HAHA that is the worst solution to people not responding I've ever heard. UNLESS you mean 1c uniques then sure, but imagine paying someone 5x more for a single scarab whole buying in bulk 2. lol it's still isn't what GGG wants which is player interaction
Path of exile was the first Argp that I played. I never played Diablo. I played StarCraft. The first I heard of Poe was in a game informer. I saw the passive tree and I knew it was the game for me. I looked it up and downloaded the game, that day.
So Alva is the Last to Die. It was confirmed on a panel at Exilecon (the lore panel I think). The streamer queue debacle was amazingly tonedeaf not only because they did it but it confirms intervention towards certain individuals which means "streamer luck" the manipulation of drop rates might also be possible. Lot of good content to update new players about the history of the game and the memes.
Agreed at the end lol. We're lucky to have Chris holding his ground. If the players (majority) got their way, this game would be dead: zooming around maps and finishing everything quickly gets boring real fast.
The exalted/divine switch is one of the biggest wtf are you doing moments in this games history,.. I have been collecting exalts and storing them in the standard league to play around with all the bases and weapons for alts and what not, only to get spat on by the game devs,. The sufix/prefix cannot be changed craft should cost the SAME 2 exalts, not suddenly 20 times more in divines,.. seriously F this stupid game and its contstant pointless changes. Its only been a frustrating fucking journey ever since Harvest when they literally deleted full tabs of saved crafts i otherwise never had or will have the time or will to obtain ever again..
love the idea if the iceberg video it was great. but (here comes some constructive criticism, take it or leave it) it felt very disjointed without any categories to create a red thread throughout the video. examples of categories could be: "influencial figures/streamers", "items", "community favorite NPC's" and so on
As someone who farms oni at the start of every league, i must say, yes, i agree with you. Don't do it. It's not worth it in the slightest but i've made it a tradition at this point and its a living hell. On average it can take from 9hrs to 16 hrs, depending on how many you want to farm. This last league i farmed up 4 of them (on all 4 characters i made for the farm), and it was about 16 hours of twilight strand. Just.. stay away from this grind people.
I was an avid hater of archnemesis league until I gain more knowledge about poe’s limitations. In defense of one of the worst leagues to have gone core, it was a great attempt to fix the most challenging content in the game but was not scaled properly. There is a health cap in the game and it isn’t applicable unless deep delving. You could have a build doing health cap levels of damage and it trivializes the game. The mitigation implemented into arch nemesis was an attempt to keep health cap damage builds in check and have challenging content leading up to depth 6000. A lot of how arch nemesis was implemented tho definitely kept more players back than it kept health cap damage builds in line. If all builds reached health cap levels of damage the game would just break numerically. It was a good attempt from a developer standpoint but middle of the bell curve players were effected the most negatively as a result due to poor implementation.
The "vision" dig when talking about how they have not done much for the new player experience didn't really land right. At least for me. Chris has talked about this a few times. I know he was asked on Baeclast at least once. And while his response is a bit dodgy it sounded like, to me anyway, that based on their statistics it just would not be a good allocation of resources. I personally think their current strategy is pretty strong. They are so much better than the competition that the competition advertises for them. Totally fine with new players cutting their teeth elsewhere. I saw Subtractums vid about trade. Generally disagree. I think PoE has the best trade system and very little can be done to improve it. I know I am in a minority there but I accept that.
I don't know about the Ranger, but Jun is definitely lesbian. She wanted to make an akhara and raise adoptive kids with Zana. Apparently that was common within the... ninja? culture.
POE is the king of ARPG and POE 2 looks even better. I just fear for the day when Chris will leave GGG, because he and his team managed what other companies only dream of.
Atlas, Harvest and Heist sucks Big D, like why are there 258 different mechanics in the game, when you put in a new you remove one like wtf, how hard is that concept to grasp?
Supposedly they will have a way to import and export passive skill trees. Thanks for making this by the way. Very cool and fleshes out the game with this added info.
I haven't watched all the way to the end -- but damn! The flex of beating the Maven during those conditions... Damn. You just punched me in some sensitive bits as I have still not even under good conditions beaten the Maven...
Trade friction for the sake of "the Vision" is why I got tired of this game and rarely play it anymore. Nearly any other ARPG is more enjoyable these days, even if they objectively offer "less."
No... I'm not sane, I've been in the world's in-between to many times...... thousands.. hundreds of thousands of times......... Absolute power corrupts absolutely~
all i want is just in game trade...or trading where i can just send money and receive item without interacting/waiting for seller to be online or be hopefull that seller will care to respond. just that.
