Yes, they were considered an old team. In 2011 someone made an article saying the Celtics vs Heat & Father time. They also made sure the to highlight the big difference between the average age of the teams. I think what is happening is that recently certain athletes( Lebron, Brady and Curry) are playing and dominating in their mid and late thirties, so its changing the standard for what is old. Because at the time of that Celtics team, they were definitely considered old.
The reason no one talks about the 04 Pistons this way is: 1. The media just doesn't like talking about Detroit teams unless they're god awful 2. That 04 team doesn't talk about their run like they were some kind of dominant dynasty every time someone puts a mic in front of them like KG and Pierce do 3. They went to back to back finals, nearly won it all in 05, and played in 6 straight ECF finals that even in the ones they lost, they were still a pain in the ass to get thru for their oppenents. For over half a decade, if you wanted to get to the finals, you had to go through the Pistons to do it and they were going to make you work your ass off for it. And 4. The Lakers they beat had Kobe and Shaq, the most iconic duo in the history of the NBA. The Pistons mollywomping that Lakers team in 5 games was a big part of why that duo was broken up before the 05 season started. And again, Pistons players on that team don't really go around trying to brag like they were the ones who got Shaq to ask for a trade Like KG and Pierce would have if it had been their team that was the last one to play the duo.
BSolz inaccurate on the Kyrie thing. The only reason Boston hated him is cause he openly tried to recruit Kevin Durant to the Nets during the Allstar break and mentioned "two max spots........it's time". The Celtics were already loaded and had bo room for two max spots as Kyrie would suggest and he knew that....he was speaking of the Nets, plus even Woj reported that Kyrie was in talks to leave Boston that year. Then once he got caught by cameras and Boston reporters confronted Kyrie about what he was saying, Kyrie started yelling and getting extra defensive saying the media was making everything up when in fact Kyrie was gaslighting Boston hard asf and felt embarassed cause he got caught in the first place 😂😂😂 Was literally the equivalent of catching your girlfriend cheating or deceiving you in any way shape or form and then when you confront her, she starts yelling, acting out and trying pull the victim card. Kyrie was a straight up coward and not only that he is also people pleaser. He loves telling people what they want to hear because he wants to be liked and appear as the "good guy" in a situation but hisbtenure in Brooklyn and now the Mavs have shown Kyrie's true colors. The man is a hardcore narcissist 😂
I’m a huge Celtics fan but yeah, we can’t brag too much about championships because 90% were won more than four decades ago. That’s why I don’t even care about talking about rings until we at least we win at least two lol.
You know what bothers me? The first 5 of the Lakers now 17 titles (yuck) not only predate those of the Celtics entirely, but also both the shot clock and the flood of black players! This fact is no doubt lost on 99% of fans and Lakers fans in particular.
Dude the celtics had two franchise players die... not to mention the league made them keep the contract for those players... pretty hard to win titles when ur top players DIE !!!
@@manz7860 it's not cope; what you said doesn't address what I said. Lakers fans/adjacents like to wave that little fact in the face of Cs fans/adjacents but don't realize they were in that same boat during the 60s/70s. They claimed to be the best bball team in the 60s when Jack Kent Cooke owned them but we all know that was some bullshit. Also, the Lakers have gone more times to the Finals than anyone *and lost* more times, too because every team they've beaten beat them *twice.*
I mean winning 1 championship alone is difficult enough, the lakers before their bubble ring had only won 2 years after the Celtics last championship. Also with the ability for players to move as freely as they have been big designation teams are always going to compete, Miami, la, and even the knicks will always be able to pull in free agents even if the team is bad simply because of the area they are in. The lakers are one of the worst ran franchises in basketball and only won simple because lebron wanted to play in la not because they were building something great.
Been a fan and still a fan, respect the hustle. But bro I always knew something was off and learning that you only started watching NBA in 2009-2010 makes a lot of sense now.
I didn't realize Lebron had a chance beat the Celtics in 08' (He should be highly praised for that) But he really could've pulled it off, and then probably faired well against Kobe in that finals. He was already the best in the world at that point T Duncan said it the year before.. I'm just saying if he did that it would be GOAT material. I wish the franchise was more ambitious in improving the team he really could've had a chance. I do blame Lebron for not meeting Kobe in the finals 08-10 it probably was just the roster, but I do think Kobe was the better player those years without question.
Why should LeBron be praised for losing to an ‘overrated’ team? Which is it? Are the ‘08 Celtics actually one of the best teams of all time (not least of all on defense) or are they talentless hacks who have no right to talk up their accomplishment? Because it sure as shit can’t be one and then the other when it’s convenient.
@@crystalizedExposedBron is the only player people use that logic for if we were talking about Kobe losing to the pistons or MJ to the Celtics we wouldn't even be having this conversation.
Yo BSOLZ I’m pretty sure the reason why AD didn’t get traded to the Celtics was bc AD and Kyrie were both under the Derrick rose rule and you can’t trade for a player under the Derrick rose rule whilst having another player under the same rule, unless the Cs were gonna trade kyrie for ad which was never gonna happen
I hate this dumb premise: The Celtics have lost two players to death who were legendary: Len bias and Reggie Lewis They lost an entire free agency campaign essentially of Gordon Hayward and endured the craziest Kyrie behavior to date. They got kind of screwed by Garnett’s knee. No one beat lebron. But only one team really gave him any competition. Free agency and player movement was an issue. If you look at player movement with the exception of our free agents, no one went anywhere that wasn’t lebron centric or warm weather and instagram. It’s a completely different landscape. They built a team from scratch with two homegrown stars. It was always going to take time and yet still were more successful consistency wise than any one else mentioned.
The "crazy Kyrie behaviour" was all due to Celtics fans saying they don't need Kyrie and calling him some pretty serious insults plus the overall bad team chemestry (mostly due to too many shot creators on the team and Kyrie not being a great leader tbh). Also, keeping Kyrie, Jt and JB was a mad move. I'm not saying keep Kyrie, but by not trading JT/JB/Terry Rozier and signing Kyrie and Gordon Hayward you are neither commiting to the future or the present which rarely works out
@@TuFrutaMadre888 I mean no. Kyrie had locked Boston fans in after his I’m coming back speech. Then he had the weird waffle gate whisper stuff at all stars and for the rest of the season he acted like a douche. You can literally see the switch happen. He shows up and half asses a coming back question and he stops playing the same or acting the same. The bottom line is healthy Hayward is prob the piece you need to win it all. He was the Swiss knife that made a selfish team move the ball and function.
The heat piss me off as a bucks fan bc they aren’t gonna win the chip but they make sure either the bucks or Celtics who could actually win the whole thing aren’t going to play in the finals or each other in the playoffs. So infuriating because they always win on some rookie minimum player balling out and never being good ever again
The celtics are in a better position to handle the 2020's. The organisation had no succession plan in place for when red Auerbach wasn't there. They now have a young coach. Young general manager who seems to know what's he doing. 2 young stars in basketball terms. I think the current Celtics team is their best since the 80's.
my only Filipino coworker that watched basketball was a huge Pistons fan. but he was like 50 and said he became a fan because of Isiah Thomas back when he was still living in the Philippines
Nah... I'm a Filipino and I cringe at the Lakers. The only reason why the Lakers are known by Filipinos back in the 70s to the early 2000s was because of media and sports news exposure(which was predominantly about the Lakers). The only exception was the 90s where majority of news is about the Bulls and MJ. With the emergence of the internet, Filipinos are more interested in their own "kababayan" Spo (Miami - Lebron era)which has a bit of Filipino blood and recently Clarkson in Utah. Majority of Filipinos are bandwagons, that's for sure. Oh yeah, there are 2 maybe 3 teams I like in the NBA, and that's Utah, because of how I think John Stockton is the best point guard. OKC, because of Westbrook back in 2008. And maybe Miami, when they acquired Jimmy Butler.
You'd think 40 yrs a long time, which kinda is, but say another 40 yrs go by without even winning one chip, which is totally within the realms of possiblity, assuming there's a semblance of truth in what KG had to say that night on that confetti-strewn parquet floor. That'd make it 80 yrs with only one ring. Then goes another couple decades and before you know it we be talkin a win per century clip. Makes that 08 O'Brien trophy that much more priceless.
22:01 looking back at this take, i think there’s much more nuance to the comparison now. Rondo and cp3 were similar in age, and cp3 didn’t have too bad of an injury history at that point. Rondo was just kinda worse in almost every way. Kevin durant, on the other hand, is much older than jaylen brown and while much more talented, would probably shift the balance of the team. JB has been a secondary star behind tatum; KD would demand to be the focal point of the offense in some sense. The question would remain whether they would win against the nuggets with just big al and rob will at the 5(no hate just jokic) and if KD would remain healthy for a long enough time to help the Celtics win more than one. Obviously, KD still seems good now, but then comes the question of tatum’s production, especially with the recent streak of bad shooting from tatum. Definitely more interesting of a question now
Watchin this with my pops (Magic Johnson and Walt Frazier fan ) he kept pointing out that - Hondo, Cowens, and JoJo won two in the 70s and no one else after Bird can say that.
Ngl bsolz def got a point with the set up with the rondo fake behind the back pass because the reason it worked so well is because he would hit that behind the back pass on pic and pops or pic and rolls so efficiently that people had to react to it. Prime rondo was definitely different other people would look stupid doing it bc they couldn’t hit the pass to actually make that a real fake
@@razkable Cause why, a few years without a championship yet y’all have the most championships by far without any other teams close to that count, oh my goodness it’s been so hard to be a Lakers or Celtics fan. Like I said, spoiled and I’ll add entitled.
1:03:43 the irony is the same thing you are saying about the Celtics rebuilding to fast has been what the Heat have done we just managed to do it better than the Celtics
Bro as a Celtic fan it’s just some of the worst luck EVER 😓 we should have at least 5-6 more from 86 Len bias , Reggie Lewis , if antoine walker focused up if the big 3 Celtics would’ve stayed healthy for just 1 more year Rondo & Jeff could’ve did it with some help If IT4 had anyone 😂 If Kyrie was Focused on winning championships If Gordon never has the worst injury on screen I ever saw… And so much more
They literally added a guy that a lot of people thought was better than Jordan to a team that cruised to 67 wins in 86 with Len Bias and then Reggie Lewis but one died before he stepped on an NBA court and the other died entering his prime. Then Garnett's knee in 2009, and crooked refs in game 7 in 2010. They should have broke through with the current group with Hayward and Irving and since then but just haven't come through when it counted. A lot of bad luck but reverse that luck and they're over 20 with championships.
I remember 08 i loved that Celtics team but kobe was Mike to me at that time when the finals came me and my cousin was going back n forth cause i was telling him they wasn't beating Kobe i was sick when he lost😂 but he came back and got 2💯 #LLB 🐍
Avery Bradley clamping Kyrie is crazy. Ky averaged 23 against AB his whole career.he might've mad it difficult to get shots off but he never clamped Kyrie.
I can testify that in yr 2000s everyone i knew here in my area in ph are lakers/kobe fan and most of the time a lebron hater. Im more of a gsw fan now. Yeah im a bandwagon 😂😂
Such a bad move to cut Ime off. I get 100% why they had to do it, but also see why no other team would’ve even considered moving on from him. But them executives are the real power brokers in the organization. Wife steppin out and gettin flipped, don’t care. Fuck the finals. He out
Man, I became a fan of Steph because I started watching in 2015-16, my friends were talking about him when he was injured in the 2016 playoffs. Then watching game 7.. even though Curry was having a "bad game" and I could tell, he was still dragging every player towards him and had all eyes on him. I was a soccer fan when I was younger so I understand what it means to play-make and make things easier for everyone else. I loved how even at his worst he is still insanely impactful. He also hit that one 30-footer with a hand in his face in that 4th quarter like cmon. Then watching 2017 and 2018 I felt like it was Curry that allowed GS to reach such high highs. Because KD would have the ball in his hand getting buckets, but it's the Curry flying around screens that's really unique and adds something extra.. No matter how good your number 1 is, Curry will add 27 with 5 threes to that. I think if you are a second option averaging 27 with more playmaking impact, also your on/off impact is more important to the team.. you're better than the 1st option at that point. You could argue Curry fits better next to other stars than any other player
No fanbase is more spoiled than Boston fans. Unironically bitching agiur having 1 ring in 40 years meanwhile there's several teams with 0 in 80 years 😂
Dawg said “ Booo, Dwight Howard “ because the Celtics lost to Orlando because of him…! This is a weird generation that doesn’t like to watch competitive games. If you think you’re team is the best then you want them to beat the best competition, but on my if both teams are competing…
Pathetic history the Celtics have only won I don’t know 17 championships i know the Celtics only have one championship in nearly 40 years but 17 championships is 17 championships and that is a lot better then but most teams and the guy making this video is a young guy.
