I just came to the epiphany that gaming is simply too big for its britches. Too many shareholders that heard about how lucrative the industry is, jumping in and making demands without any idea of how to make a fun video game. The indie market is thriving because of its detachment from the more money hungry side of the industry. They just want to make good games.

We're at the point in gaming where exclusives are going to die. Game development is at the point where it's too expensive to justify exclusivity. Nintendo can get away with it because the people buying their consoles aren't looking for "next gen" graphics and gameplay, so the games are a lot cheaper to make. The people who mainly play PlayStation or Xbox are looking for "next gen" experiences. Those experiences are expensive. Consoles are becoming what they were always heading towards; a cheaper alternative to buying a PC. Sony and Microsoft are businesses. They didn't decide to bring exclusives to PC out of the kindness of their heart. It's because that's the only thing that makes financial sense.

It all started when Sony Computer Entertainment (the division of Sony in charge of the PlayStation brand) became Sony Interactive Entertainment. Their U.S. and Japan-based offices would be merged, and they are now headquartered in California. Then they started censoring games in around 2018, namely Japanese games with sexualized women. Then they released the pathetic PlayStation Classic mini console. From there, it continued to get worse and worse and worse and worse for PlayStation. And here we are today.

PS5 is part of a garbage console generation. Barely any good games, wasted 2 years of its life cycle by not circumventing scalpers and dared to increase the price for its 3 year old console. The only good thing it's done is haptic triggers despite failing miserably at mandating it's use to developers so it's severely underutilized.

Sony responds with "we believe in console generations" & recieves all the praise.... Pathetic is certainly the way I'd describe them and then they come out talking about how they are ready to move to the ps6. It's been piss poor then the heavily anticipated Spiderman 2 was also rushed and is missing things that were in the first game. Then you have naughty dog making unnecessary remakes to games that don't need it. Then there's the whole games being movies instead of being games.

Between 2013 and 2015, the PS4 only had 8 exclusives, and of those 8 games, only 2 of them were must plays, Bloodborne and Until Dawn. You could also argue that Infamous was one of them, but no one mentions either Second Son or First Light as being great. So, you could have asked the same question between 2013 and 2015 - three years with only 2 games worth playing. The rest were multiplatform titles. It wasn't until 2017 with Horizon Zero Dawn, 2018 with God of War, and 2020 with FF7 Remake where the PS4 was considered a must have system. The same will probably apply here with the PS5 not having some truly fantastic games until the last few years of its life cycle. FF7 Rebirth is an exclusive, but that released in 2024, which is in line with when big memorable games start releasing for the console, about 3 years into its life cycle. As a gamer since the early 90's, it's always been like this. PS1 came out in 1994, and it wasn't until 97 with FF7, 98 with Metal Gear Solid/Resident Evil 2 and 2000 with Legend of Dragoon where people were praising the PS1 for being a great console. Hell, even Crash Bandicoot 3 and Resident Evil 3 didn't release until 1998 and 1999 respectively. By the year 1999, the PS1 was on its way out since the PS2 released just one year later in 2000. This trend also continues with the PS2 where you didn't have the really good titles coming out for at least 3-4 years after the console launched. God of War 1 was 2005, Ratchet and Clank Going Commando was 2003. Final Fantasy 12 was 2006, and it just goes on from there. So, where are the games? Perhaps you should consider that this has always been the case with their consoles and this is nothing new. It's only noticeable now since the prices of everything have gone up and continue to go up. Back in the 90's, we didn't notice it much because it was just the games and the console. There were no subscriptions services of any kind on top of the price of games and the hardware.

The Playstation I knew died when Sony decided to shutdown Japan studios and because of that the PS5 is the first time I skip a PS console from the original PS 1 to 4 I owned all of them and hearing about the PS plus price hike just proves I made the right call

Also apart from FF16 which came with the console, i haven't played a single ps5 game. All my games are ps4. What a joke. I feel like i should just go back to my beloved PS4

Sony used to have so much variety in their franchises that for some time, I actually prefered their IPs over Nintendo's. But ever since the PS4, the publisher has released only a dozen or so major games with very similar gameplay and systems with little deviation. That approach has completely bit them in the ass with the PS5 with how ridiculously long development cycles have gotten. Sony absolutely needs to scale back the production of their games considerably. Their current direction and business model is not sustainable and will only hurt them in the long run in terms of financial success and consumer morale. They need to bring back long dormant IPs, invest in smaller and more unique games, and ditch the homogenous cinematic style they've adopted since The Last of Us.

Sony has brand recognition, and they know it, and I have a worrying theory about what they're going to do about it. Historically, consoles are sold at a loss and companies make their money primarily from game sales, which is a huge reason why consistent release schedules and exclusives are so important. The PS5, despite being comparable in quality to a trail of spit on a wall, has already sold over 50 million units. Streamers, celebrities, TikTok personalities, they all flex PS5's in the same vein (pun intended) as they do their Lamborghinis and their Balenciaga. Sony has proven that they care more about profits than gamers. I hate to use this term, but the "normies" with too much money who will buy anything remotely trendy are the new target audience. Effectively, Sony can release a new console, raise the price above what it's actually worth, and do absolutely nothing to support its library, which will obviously give them an excuse to shut down even more studios. Then, a few short years down the line, they can release another worthless piece of hardware that appeals to nobody but everyone apparently _needs_ to have... and then bam. Sony becomes the new Apple. Supported by a sea of consumers who only understand "buy" and "spend."

Im glad I switched to PC. I can play Xbox and PlayStation games without paying to play online.

PS5: All my games are also on PS4 and PC. Xbox: all my games are also on PC. Nintendo is the only one that seems to know what it's doing. Someone needs to go back and give Dreamcast DVD support so the industry doesn't hit the mainstream as hard, and someone needs to tell Xbox and PlayStation devs to do something different for once.

The PS5 is currently still the best selling console (outselling the switch on a weekly basis) despite no games, so from a management perspective it does really seem that people will buy the "upgrade" anyways hence the PS5 Pro

This is so true. I got a Ps5 for Christmas last year and for what? No exclusives and Sony literally telling me “Just got the console? Too bad no new exclusive games until next year” and at that point I’m gonna be picking up that rumored switch 2 and its games, so Sony already lost my money.

Covid screwed everything up. Along with goofy rising interest rates making people take less risky investments in things like unique games or any sort of software/tech venture in general. There's layoffs along all these sectors. The only unique/risky games in recent years came from indie devs.

I loved PS1/PS2/PS3 but in 2020 i built a PC. Havent looked back. Consoles are dead.

Both of these companies are a complete circus. Lack of variety is my biggest problem with this generation and last generation. Variety apparently died in the 7th gen.

Publishers should really start exploring double A games that they can release at a $40 price point. They will probably be surprised at how much people are willing to spend money if that is the price they will pay. No need to maximize or push the graphical prowess of modern consoles, just as long as the performance is 60fps always that is already fine

I remember back in 2017-2019 hyping up persona and getting into Yakuza through the sale. When the ps5 barely stayed on shelves during a pandemic of all times, I lost hope in even saying "I'll get it when it's cheaper, like my ps4" Just to face the very same issues as you. the very "Exclusives" Sony brags about comes to Pc with better optimizations and mods to spice things up. Helk, I remember Nintendo at least trying with Indie games and making new IPs (granted they never stuck, but games like astral chain, Bayonetta, no more heroes and katana 0 having homes on the switch outside of PC ports is also alarming) The debate was always "Xbox got the best graphics, Xbox got the multiplayer market, Xbox got no games" which makes it ironic having never got PS+ outside of the free trials because of the market being pathetic with releases and the rare ps2 or pc port that helps add variety outside of "Action, racing, open world, SERIOUS." As games get ports anyways and the console war stops mattering, I find myself wanting to try out games on the switch, trying out high fi rush and Sunset overdrive, helk I even wish the persona games got ported to Pc faster, so I didn't need to hype up the game for royal to just release and make old purchases redundant. And as much of a Sony fanboy I was growing up with ps1 and 2, seeing Sony practically make huge movie like experiences each time without some variety of genre and expectations like Spiritfarer and baulder's gate 3 making everyone angry cause "They're mundane." Seeing It takes two win game of the year rubbed me the wrong way until I saw bauldur's gat 3 get the same praise and I said, "Sony hasn't changed much since 2018 huh?" excellent video, really a great take on what all gamers can agree affects us regardless of console because of pricing going up, but indie games outshining tripple A studio giants.

Sold my PS5 last year because i didn't see any reason to keep it. Almost no new IPs, way too few games, almost all exclusives got PC ports, heavy DEI influence in their games. Recently asked my friend to lend me his console to play Stellar Blade and it was a blast, if Sony released a few games of that quality per year they would still be at a top.

I’ve started to notice that once they’re done with an IP, they kill their online mode. LittleBigPlanet, Twisted Metal, ModNation Racers, and soon they’ll come after Uncharted.

If everyone boycotts the system and just starts playing ps1-ps4 or some other system then maybe they'll start doing things diffrently.

The PS6 will he expensive AF so it'll take some time until the remaining PS users get the new machine. But as it is said in the video, PS5 doesn't have a lot of games. Also, all this ESG garbage forcely included in almost every AAA proyects is losing tons of money. To be honest, if Sony PS must fall so be it. Hopefully they will learn from their mistakes.

More realistic doesn't equel fun. Now days more games feel like they are interactive movies then games. And Sony is definetly the worst offender of this. They focus so much on making games more realistic and cinematic, that they have completly forgotten what gaming meant to a lot of people, especially in the old days. Heck, the new Sony/PlayStation CEO even said at one point that he hates older games. Yeah, really shows how much they don't care about the brand they are trying to make or the things that made them succesful in the first place. You knows things are bad with modern gaming that I spent my money more on older consoels and their games. I rather play on my PS2 & PS3, rather then on a PS4 or PS5.

For me the only reason to own a PS5 so far is Stellar Blade. Not being w0ke, or filled with microtransactions, having almost zero issues, it's optimized af is what sold me. And yes i don't mind paying 70$+ for those type of games cause we need more of those. The story is short and good at best but the rest of the game is what sold me the most. The gameplay. I don't like at all Soulsborne genre games but this one even though it has elements to it i loved it. It's not as brutal as the Souls games but it makes a good balance between easy and hard. Currently I'm on my mid 4th NG+ playthrough.

I'm telling you. The game industry needs to be renaissance. Why does everything have to be about money now? While I like some PlayStation games, where's my variety from the PS2 and PS3? I blame the casuals for milking the game industy to where developers don't care about having fun anymore because they just HAVE TO appeal to casuals.

What I hate about Sony is that they have not fixed OG CODs servers for new accounts on PlayStation 3. If you like multiplayer games Microsoft with Xbox is more reliable. People say we pay to play online to keep servers running yet nothing is done to fix it. I might be getting a series X just for that.

Literally no fricking thing changes if they are not exclusives, like, the only difference is how Sony milks the gamer community for forcing them to buy their crappy products to be able to play the games that easily could be ported to PC but no they want to milk gamers for hardware crap. The truth is that even if Sony had more exclusives, their games would still be bad, the services would still be bad, and the whole PS hardware mess would still be a hardware mess. I am so happy knowing I have never purchased a Playstation beyond PS2, and it will continue being like that, no enough exclusives would make me buy any of their crappy hardware.

But still we are going back to my old hold back that I have always had for years and the main reason why I didn't buy a ps4 only after whole years after the ps5 launch. Something that baffled me since I have heard about a ps plus, the fact that you cannot play online, fucking online, a feature that I had always been used to since I was little and decided to press on a wifi connect button and just simply play a game online/multiplayer on a pc or a fucking smartphone. The fact this console is just a useless box with hardware in it most of the time without a paid life support was and still is baffling to me, when I can just buy a pc and plug an ethernet cable then press play on a multiplayer game. I mean to me a subscription is something extra not a permission to fucking breathe

So, the problems are exactly like Xbox, and Nintendo. None of the big three are exactly throwing out new exciting releases, left and right, they all need online subscriptions, all hardware and games are expensive everywhere. And even if PlayStation had game pass I wouldn't sign up, I want to own my games, not rent them, I don't treat games like movies. The entire industry is just in a weird place right now.

The ps5 costs about 14k to 16k (depends on what it comes with) here in my country (Namibia it's in Africa). Translate that to USD and it'd be 853 USD, so still a lot I think.

My experience: PS3: actively used it for 7 years while sporadically playing on PC; PS4: actively used it for 2 years, then became a netflix machine for my parents as I switched almost entirely to PC; PS5: Took it to play GT7 and other exclusives. GT7 turned to be underwhelming, other exclusives moved to PC anyway. Used it 2 months, it is now taking the dust since 2 years. No, GTA6 won't change my mind as I don't mind waiting a year. This console is useless to me. I won't even bother with PS6, sony.
