The funny thing about Justin is that sometimes you think a sound is Adam with a fancy guitar effect, but it's actually Justin with an even fancier effect on bass.

Even though there were no rewards to reap and no loving embrace to see me through, there was a time when this song helped me keep moving on the tedious path I'd chosen. Every day, in the drudgery of the job I had at the time, in my head, I'd hear, "I must keep reminding myself of this, I must keep reminding myself this." Also, I took comfort in holding on to the lie that "I still may" walk away.

Interesting. When I was in a soul-sucking job, I went for more of the angry route, cranked up way too loud. Maybe this would've been a healthier alternative. :) I hope you've been able to move on from that time.
@JonPaulMaki
@JonPaulMaki Год назад
@@MusicCatsandCoffee Well, the other song that played in my head a lot at the time was "Bloodline" by Slayer, which was probably less healthy. Anyway, yeah, that job is long gone. I don't know that where I'm at now is any healthier, and it certainly doesn't pay as much - okay there was ONE reward to reap with that job, in that it paid extremely well - but at least I don't have to leave home to engage in the drudgery and tedium.

This is why I love Tool and why I try to share it with others. You need to be a naturally deep thinker to really understand and appreciate it, but Tool has been a big part of my personal growth. Always great to see people who feel and experience the same

This song is about being patient...lol. duh. To persist against the tedium with a promise of reward on the other side. Aka. don't kill yourself because itll prob get better. I love it. If it works for you, perfection. As for me, I rage against it. I don't die because that's what life wants me to do. Fuck that....I'm buzzed. Sorry..

I feel the same way about the theme of the Album relating a lot to self-growth and improvement. Parabol/Parabola for example is a core song in my life with stuff like “This body, this body holding me, be my reminder here that I am not alone” or Lateralus with the classic “Spiral out, keep going!”, many have helped me through tough times. Gotta love how Tool resonates so deeply with our human existence.

The first half is somewhat forgettable for me; not bad, just not as interesting. The second half after "be patient" is one of my favorite of Danny's grooves. Not a song that features the bass, imo. You've got so many other options for that: pneuma, Rosetta stoned, 46&2, the pot, wings part 2, schism, invincible, and descending all immediately stand out.

I know that this song in particular is about Maynard's mom. It's like telling a first person pov of her 27 year paralysis. But yeah it took me a few listens to get into it. I think my favorite part is Maynard's harmonies when he sings "wait it out" at the punch
@futurebreedmachine9302

There are some songs that I can't listen to even though they are beautifully composed, because of how personal they are to Maynard. It feels like I am invading his personal space. This song is one of those along with Wings for Marie Pt 1&2.

Noooo, it’s not about his mom 🤦‍♂️ it’s about the band itself and Maynard’s feelings toward the drawn out process in which the others in the band go about making an album. It’s unbearable to him but in the end it’s all worth it

Maynard is such a genius.....talking about life as "the tedious path I've chosen here" we all choose are paths....and without a doubt question are own choices daily, but he's urging you to be "patient" and stay the path....and to have the patience to help the damaged and broken you meet along the way......it's fuckign awesome......and that mid song metal crunch is just them reminding you they can swing big when needed.....TooL forever! Stay badass Lauren!

One of the things I appreciate with your channel is your honesty. I love Tool, not sure if I would fall into The Tool Army or not, not fanatical about them but I do love them. Certain songs do take a few listens to truly appreciate what is being presented. I enjoy their music much in a similar way in which Pink Floyd takes you on a journey and it isn't until you are ready that you hear "it". Be Patient, it will come.

I think one could separate all life experiences into "got me from the beginning," "not into it at first, but growing on me," and "what's going on here": music, food, friends, jobs, rides at Disneyland, choosing toothpaste, shopping at Ikea, choosing your favorite positions in the Kumasutra, etc, etc.

When this reaction video released I couldn't comment, having at that point still been a patient patient myself in hospital xD But I doubt that Maynards' patient had his both arms broken in a bicycle accident, as others have commented here below: in my interpretation his patient is probably his mother. And this song is probably one out of the category that will grow on you, should you have the patience to listen again to the patient

It's not a go-to song, but when I listen to the whole album, it seems to fit right in. It's there at the right time. I've read that the lyrics are from Maynard's mother's perspective. I don't know if that's true, though. : )

The often overlooked song about his mother. Some even try to argue it's not about her...but they are wrong. Sure Maynard likes to throw in multiple possible meanings but it's about his mom. EDIT: Keep listening. It will go close to the top of the list. It's a grower for sure. The guitar is killer.

@@MusicCatsandCoffee Fair enough. I dunno though, I think you'd be into Rammstein, perhaps if there were translations available. A lot of the lyrics are very tongue-in-cheek - there's a lot of dark humour and with their performances, over-the-top grandiosity taken to an absurd level on purpose, but they're always making a point. The are very aware of Germany's history and how they are perceived coming from that part of the world playing the kind of music they play. Very underrated band. I have to say thank you for introducing me to Slipknot and Opeth: I didn't think they were my jam either, but I'm coming to appreciate them through watching your videos.
