Penguins (order Sphiniscomorpha, family Sphiniskidae) are a group of seabirds that cannot fly. They live almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, with only one species, the Galapagos Penguin (Spheniscus mediculus), which lives north of the Equator.
The number of penguin species has been a matter of dispute. Depending on the estimates, the number of recorded species ranges from 6 to 19. Although all penguin species are native to the Southern Hemisphere, they do not live only in frozen regions such as Antarctica, contrary to popular belief. In fact only a few species of penguins live in such southern latitudes. Three species live in the tropics, sometimes it will rise north of the equator sometimes it will rise north of the equator
The largest species is the Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri): adult birds have an average height of 1.1 meters and weigh 35 kg or more. The smallest species is the Little Blue Penguin which is only 40cm tall and weighs 1kg. Larger penguins conserve their body heat more efficiently, and thus live in colder climates, while smaller penguins are found in temperate or even tropical climates. In 2002, a group of Argentinian scientists spotted a subspecies of the Emperor Penguin that reaches a height of 1.6 meters on the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Most penguins feed on shrimp, fish, squid, and other marine life that they catch by diving and swimming underwater. They spend half their lives in the sea and half on land.
When mothers lose a chick, they sometimes try to steal from another, often unsuccessfully as other females nearby help the defending mother defend her young.
The penguins appear to be unafraid of humans, and approach groups of explorers without hesitation.
