I have 2 Penn 155s. They cast great. I have added several others in the last few months that include a 140 Squidder, a 200, 60s. 500s and others. I have several that has the scenic tail plates and now got addicted to getting more of them . I have about 65 Penn reels from the #9 to 6/0 now and still want more. Great reels. Great video.
I use a few different ones pending but anything your would use for 8 and bait like a 2-8oz 9-10ft on the surf. Great all around. I have one blank I use thats lighter from 1-3 which works great as well. and of course the 7ft perfect for bridge and pier like here. But if only one rod on the surf something that can do 2-6 or 2-8oz and about a 9-11ft blank should do! Thanks jack good question hope I did not confuse you more!
I don't know if you have tried this or not, but I run dacron on alot of my penn conventional reels and it makes the chrome spools very easy to cast, I even run it on some of my aluminum spools too though I use mono on them mostly, but all my chrome spools get dacron.
I normally use braid sometimes mono the dacron is soft and gives so those blow outs dont happen but 1 in all these years!!! Thanks again for sharing Adam!
I knew youd like this one! One of the rare days I am out for dinner! 13 is bad luck and any more is too much a nice round number 14! May have kept one more off the camera hehe! Have a cook coming up in the next month or so for your Aaron too! Are ya getting'em and fish your way!!!
I have the Penn Beachmaster. Bought it at the old Capital sporting goods store on 14 street in Manhattan(No longer there). Caught many Stripers and Blues. Great casting reel.
Hi Joseph! I remember that place was down the block from the guitar shop! I used to run in a buy flies after getting some strings for my old guitar! I love to take this out for a spin now and then one of my old original reels!
Hi Jerry how are you iam thinking about getting a new 5500c3 or s series reel not sure what I want to do I learned how to use it but I don't know how to maintain this reel thanks 🐟
Thank you for the video. If taken care of properly, old school Penn reels will outlast their modern counterparts. I happen to be a Jigmaster 500 fanboy, but I would love to add a Beachmaster to my collection.
Hi Dennis and thanks! Love my jigmaster too but tend to go with this or the squidder. Actually the squidder is my main stay love em all though! Thanks again and much appreciate taking the time to watch and comment!
Hi Jerry how are you I was just watching the porgy fishing video I think Penn is making the 112 h 2 I am going look into it when I get a chance just finishing up my putting line on conventional fishing reels take care talk soon god bless 🐟
Thanks Tim, for me the fishing was fun - maintenance ah-er well felt like work but happy to put it out there!!! Thanks Tim as always and get some trouts tommorow!
I'm kind of interested in picking one of these up, I'm curious how light of a weight you think they could throw, and how light of line you could use? I'm generally casting 3/4-2 oz spoons on 15lb line, would a beach master work well for that?
Yes good range for them, the 15lb should be great make sure you get one with the plastic spool they cast better and are lighter. i would also fill the bottom backing with heavier line and last 100yds or so 15lb test.
Hay why are you fishing in my spot??? Just kidding. Your video is excellent.. I have been using my Penn 155 for the last fifty years.. It is one of their best reels.. I also like the Penn 350 because of their unique levelwind set up...
Hehe, thanks for watching and the comment Seymour, yea the 350 is a heck of a reel why they dont make any like that today I have-not a clue" A levelwind with no cast drag is just ingenious. Makes me think folks just lean towards more complicated and over engineered over common sense and simplicity certainly on of the best. i think US reel uses on in there design but not sure if they still do? 50 Years yet another testimonial! Thanks Seymour!
One of the parts of fishing is about being able to handle all equipment and situation a part of the Fish Your Way mantra, its a matter of acquiring a broad way of skill getting out there, not being discourage on what the good lord places in your hand and being able to fish it through with ease and confident. They are a bit of a lost or fading art the least these days.
It would depend on what you are going to be using it for. Bridge pier boat jetty may want something 7-8ft 2-6 oz (like in this video) surf 9-11ft 2-8oz, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1GJES01CSD4.html dont have to spend a lot just keep in mind what you want it to do. Hope some helps!
I would like to use it on the pier and surf fishing just got my fishing license, just that my dad doesn't have space in the car that's why I was asking for any recommendations on a rod for it (2 piece if possible) watching your videos and thanks for the reply. 👌
Much welcome, anything should do the job if you stay in that range a 9' rod is a good compromise if you are gonna use it both surf and pier 2-6oz rated. if your new to these reels too 20lb mono casts much easier then the braided lines. Thanks again for watching and good question!
Thanks Team A La Vergar! For the size this does great the senators will give you a bit more drag Jigmaster to. This can handle some decent sea creature 100lb shark with 300lb a definite possibility with the right line and spool and tide!
I had one but I didn’t know how to cast it I got it for free but I thought maybe it’s just to old but now o want it back and also how does the line go on to the spool evenly without a eye to direct the line
They take a feel some practice then they open up for ya. You have to thumb the line on em. I have found them in trash and been offerd reels because most folks dont have the patience to learn to do. A little practice and youll be good to go! Give em another go!
They are pretty neat tight solid reels I would use em but I prefer lefty for levelwinds and they are hard to come by in left hand otherwise be using one today
Good stuff I have never used the cals, I have used white lithium grease, its a dry grease so can be used in drags and works well but will have to give it a go! Thanks James!
Got a penn long beach 65 for 5 dollars, good condition everything works now all I gotta do is go find a decent rod which shouldn't be hard to find for cheap.
Hi Jerry, Good video on maintaining a conventional reel. I know you really like your vintage reels. Can you do a video about rinsing and maintaining a spinning reel, after a day of fishing. I've seen so many videos that give various ways to rinse a reel. Some don't seem very practical. Some are sure to get water into the reel. What do you recommend? Thanks, Mickey
Thanks Mickey will keep that in mind, the older spinners are pretty rugged spool of and quick rinse they do well maybe a wipe of wd40. The newer ones you have to get in the nooks and crannies often and may not be submerge friendly. The penn 700's are pretty easy just rinse and go, if they dunk take off the cover plate and rinse through with soap and water then dry with a towel and clean again with wd40. The used to use kerosene to clean reels too. Those I like to grease inside. Seal up and fish! Thanks for the recommendation Mickey will keep in mind!
Hi Jerry nice educational video. Penn reels are simple to care and last forever. Question- why I get my braid and mono doesn’t stay well knotted. It is frequently brake at this point and I loose fish. Hook and sinker. Thanks
Thanks Riyad, are you asking about the braid to mono knot or knots with braid? Braid slips, you have to go through the eye of a hook 2x then tie your knot I never had any problems using a uniknot for both to the hook with braid and mono to braid. A surgeon or blood knot may slip out of the mono to braid knot but the uni to uni I never had a problem. Let me know if thats the knot junction or you were talking about another, always awesome to hear from you!
Fish Your Way I have main 60-80lb braid on Penn Spinning reels and I usually add 2-3 feet of mono before leader. Braid to mono. And one I cast chunk and sink it braid line brakes at knot. Will try uni. Thanks
Hay get this, My dads side of the family is from Ocean City, I live in Philly, I'm black; Vacationing in OC , I randomly bumped into my WHITE COUSIN............We got drunk as hell, I missed work and got canned, Don't know what happened to My Cousin. My other cousin saw the whole thing. Good Times!
I always enjoy watching you use the vintage stuff. Never knew/realized that you can press the oil needle into the oiling ports. I would always unscrew them to oil up. Music was kinda loud in some segments but good video regardless. Would like to see how you cook up your porgies.
Thanks Flores, you were certainly oiling then up the right way, i think I mentioned that is my preferred way but on the beach the ports do come in handy just to get a little drop if you need it but taking off is proper you get a nice coat. Still learning as I go here with the video editing and appreciate the input! Thanks as always for watching and commenting, FYW - Jerry
