Do you know how most people go about learning scales - specifically the pentatonic scale for bass?
The usual process is to go up and down the scales until the 'stick' - although that could take a long time.
This process - while it's good for getting familiar with new scales - can actually be making you sound bland and robotic.
How?
Well if that's the only way you practice your scales, what do you think is going to come out whenever you start making your own bass lines, creating fills or taking solos?
If all you do is go up and down scales in isolation, you'll probably do the exact same thing when you're trying to make music.
Here's the tricky part though - just going up and down scales isn't very 'musical'. It just sounds like an exercise and that something you don't want when you're playing music.
You can 'hijack' this scale-learning process though using the method in this video to make sure that you not only learn new scales and memorize them so they stick, but you'll be able to play them fluidly all over your fretboard.
If you'd like a copy of the shapes of the pentatonic scale for bass as well as the tabs and notation for everything you see in the lesson, just go here:
becomeabassist...
Sign up up on that page and I'll send you my free Pentatonic Scale Cheat Sheet. It's 100% awesome and 100% free.
Good luck with the lesson and happy playing!
Cheers,
Luke

I’ve been playing bass since 1994. I’ve gotta say that the lesson concept of this video is the best lesson on scales I’ve ever seen. Plenty of people teach about scales, modes and such, but the way it’s presented in this video with linking it all together is something I’m surprised I’ve never seen anyone else do. I wish I would have seen this 25 years ago. The younger me woulda saved many hours of practicing scales the wrong way.

@271179
@271179 5 лет назад
It's the same shape across different keys the same way the major and natural minor scales are. Pentatonic scales are just broken down major/minor scales
@chizhang2765
@chizhang2765 4 года назад
You start the minor pentatonic from the key you're playing (D minor is the same thing started from 5th fret). If it's a major key start the rotation from major pentatonic rather than minor pentatonic.

Displaying the fret fingering in the graphic to your right nails down the confusion of listening to you name a fret letter, then the letter name of the string it's on and watching which fret you're fingers are depressing. Also, may I suggest 1:43 you not introduce a "different" i.e. Eb major pentatonic "alias" but rather discuss each "shape" as the nth mode (n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) of Cm pentatonic. Thanks for your instructive and generous contribution.

do these pentatonic shapes have names? how are you suppose to distinguish between the shapes? i know you said one of the is the Eb Major pentatonic. another is i'm assuming the minor pentatonic. not sure about the other 2?
@BecomeABassist
@BecomeABassist 3 года назад
They don't have names as far as I know, but I could definitely be wrong. The one starting on the C is the minor pentatonic shape, and like you mentioned, the one starting on Eb is the major pentatonic shape. For the other ones though, it's just a matter of memorizing them however you like - whether that's through looking at the shapes visually or figuring them out through sound. It's totally up to you. I know some people think about them in terms of 'big boxes' and 'little boxes'. For example, the 4th shape spread across all the strings (G and Bb on the E-string, C and Eb on the A-string, then F and G on the D-string, and Bb and C on the G-string) you can think of the E and A-strings forming a 'big box' and the D and G-strings forming a 'little box'.

Thank you so much Luke, now can you tell me how you would use that formula within a song that has four chords?
@BecomeABassist
@BecomeABassist 15 дней назад
There's a couple of ways, but the simplest is to figure out the key of the song, then use that key's pentatonic scale. So if the song is in G major, use the G major penatonic. If it's in Bb minor, use the Bb minor pentatonic. You do want to make sure however, that if you're in 'bass line mode', you probably should outline the roots of the 4 chords, but any time you want to add a bit of flair to the line, the pentatonic of the key will usually work harmonically.

Beginning bass player here. No musical education whatsoever. Have been practicing modes but didn't understand that much about them until I downloaded your Guide to the Modes. The one sentence that made a light bulb go off in my head was to start on the 2nd note of the C major scale, D, to get the 2nd mode. Then the 3rd note, E & so on to get the modes. So obvious but overlooked. Also, stating the 6th mode was the natural minor scale was another lesson learned. I assume everyone else knows these things but they really helped. Am working my way through the guide to learn more. Thanks, Luke!

Gino Viray Major pentatonic is already with in minor pentatonic and vice versa. Example if youre on key of C. Then the minor pentatonic of C is Am pentatonic. Vise versa, the major pentatonic for Am is the Cmajor pentatonic. Just go down three frets, example if its on Key of Gmajor then use Em pentatonic because Em is three frets lower than Gmajor. And same goes with any major chord key.
