Mestre I more or less quit jiu-jitsu as a purple belt. I do miss it, but I never felt very valued or accepted . Why does the coach keep helping guys half my age who wrestled and have muscles coming out of their ears? I need help too. I need encouragement too. I already have problems with depression and anxiety, so it’s tough just to go to class. I never felt like I was very good at jiu-jitsu, I’m not an athletic person but I love the art. I’m jealous of people who got their black belt. I don’t think that things will ever work out for me to train again and I’d just embarrass myself on the mats. Anyways, thank you for what you have done to further and spread the art.

Go to a different school brother. You will find you’re place. I’m with GB currently but can foresee a change in the future to a school with a much less sports bjj feel. But while I’m in the lower belts it’s good for me to get smashed up a bit

Same for me, bro. I made it to 2 stripes purple. I quit because I just one day started freaking out in class when I was mounted. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. After that, I stopped going. It was a good run. I would try again if I found the right teachers, but Jiujitsu is full of too many meatheads and sandbaggers.

@@LH74 bro please get back on the mats. I have panic attacks before classes to the point I vomit sometimes. Jiu jitsu is needed more for the people who quit then don’t. Don’t run from the fight please brother, stay in the game for your own reasons, to beat that voice inside saying don’t go. Yes there is unpleasant egos in the gym, but you don’t have to worry about them, those egos might want to smash and hurt you, but you are stronger than you think. You are a black belt, let it happen

Appreciate the post. I'm quitting too, purple belt Nothing makes me feel more suicidal and at the end of my worth than jiu-jitsu. With no god and no purpose in life what is the point that isn't just trying to get you to stick around and keep paying the instructor.

I started in spring of 1990 under Francisco Ramirez Jr Kobrakaj karate system along with GJJ. In Campbell CA. I made the mistake of quitting in 95. I am now starting back up in Ralph's academy in San Jose CA.

That’s a really interesting viewpoint…I never thought about it that second way. But, I wonder if someone has compiled robust injury statistics for all sports and compared that to jiu jitsu. Jiu-jitsu should have the easily have the overall highest injury rate I think, if you practice the first way. For something called “the gentle art”, it’s incredible detrimental to your body if you roll hard a lot for competition training, more so than any sport I’ve seen. I haven’t seen any exceptions to that statement. Thanks for posting.

Wow…this is such a good video. I had to watch it again. I think it definitely applies to all martial arts, especially the full contact ones. Take Muay Thai for example, you can take choose to flow and spar really light and playful, making sure to breathe, relax, get all the same benefits and feel that connection to nature with the “OOH WAEE” spirit 🌊 …Or you can just just spar super brutally with a really tough guy and there’s a chance you can get hurt, but it prepares you for competition. Awesome video, really should have more views!

Also the grading system is the carrot on the stick to keep people coming and the grading system is so subjective and clearly not objective on skill and experience

Every session I quit. I go home and come up with reasons why I should let meat head purple and blue belts kill me and make me feel like crap because I have shit genetics and can’t remember skills. One day I’ll quit for good.

I got sick of politics and the dogmatic approach that you need to do Gi. I lost interest in gi when I wasn’t being treated fairly. Because I got graded from another team. Its just a business to gym owners. They don’t even care when you had enough and don’t show up. Training bjj is a huge sacrifice of time and energy. And it’s something you pay the ridiculous price for the privilege.
