Nearly 40% of the long-term unemployed in the country are midcareer or older workers and it becomes harder to find work once you hit the age of 50.
"The reason is that many companies believe that if you are older, that you are less likely to be adept with technology, to learn new processes, to be able to move with change," says Mona Mourshed, founding global CEO of Generation.
"And as a result, only 15% of candidates are viewed as fit for purpose to be interviewed, let alone to be hired. But yet, when you look at how mid-career and older workers are performing on the job, about 80% of employers say that (older workers) are performing as well, if not better, than their youthful peers. That is the crux of the paradox."
WorkingNation editor-in-chief Ramona Schindelheim interviewed Mourshed and 9 other leading voices on the subject of age today, particularly when it comes to older and midcareer adults in the workforce, as part of the Age in America WorkingNation collaboration with Scripps News which begins on-air on June 17.
