Yo, hey, hi! Let's talk about which 4K UHD Blu-ray player is best for first-time buyers. Just because we don't have a home theater doesn't mean we don't deserve the best AV presentation possible. I really want to emphasize the quality of upscaling these players can achieve with DVDs as their sources.
I'm excited to discuss this further in the comments. This is a large subject, so let's start a conversation!

I have a few words of wisdom for new AV physical media files. 1) use your PS5 horizontally. The PS5 can damage your discs using it vertically all the time. I'm not sure about the Xbox Series X. 2) if you bought a TV that doesn't do Dolby Vision, skip the Sony X700 and buy the Panasonic UB820. The X700 can do DV, HDR10, and HLG but it can't do HDR10+. The UB820 does all of them. 3) Don't buy your HDMI cables from Best Buy. They overcharge, by a lot. And that's it. Actually one more, don't buy any of your electronics from Best Buy. And that's all.

Open box special or heavy clearance can be the only way to go. Remember S-video cables? They were typically $5 anywhere at the time of their (limited) use and Best Buy was selling them for around $20+tax. They still sell them despite being outmoded tech for $9 now. It'd be like buying a mini USB cable today. To charge.... what?

I've had two of these 4k players. I bought them multi region (for blu rays) modified for a local specialist. The X700 I used for 4 years. It was great for blu rays and discs that were unllblemished or 66 gig discs. On larger 100 gig discs or ones that came with slight manufacturing marks on, it was a nightmare. Freezed and skipped all the time and I was forever exchanging discs. I bought the multi region Panasonic UB820 last year and it hasn't skipped a best on any disc. I'm playing it through an LG G3 and with the latest firmware update on the player, I have full TV lead V2 Dolby Vision (this was an issue before). Discs look great and I would not hesitate to recommend it. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the X700, although it seems that the more recent ones don't have the historical issues.

Agree. I have both these players and they both very good. The Panasonic has the edge with more settings and it detects Dolby Vision without you having to go into settings yourself. For disc playing, these machines are great.

@@WRNFILM Yes, but I did have a problem getting it to do that, until I switched to the correct HDMI high-speed cable. I don't know what made the difference (I have three cables like that, different brands). Even now, the player sometimes does not want to show Dolby Vision sometimes--I have to open the tray, close it and play again. I only have a few Dolby Vision discs anyway, so it's not really big deal and the player will show them in HDR10 in any case, which I think is very similar . I bought the Panasonic for better build quality and hoping it will last longer than the Sony.
@mackjay1777

@@WRNFILM I should add that a drawback of the Panasonic is accessing the settings for subtitles. THe Sony has a dedicated subtltle button on the remote. With Panasonic, you have to go to the disc main menu, or into the player settings to get to subtitles. It's not a huge problem, but I do watch a lot of films with subtitles for various reasons.

Any and all recommendations are welcome so thank you. I've poked online for years now waiting for a bang-for-buck 4K player but so far not much has popped out. What I grew weary of immediately was the surplus of 4K upscaling which is just a Blu Ray player with software made to stretch 1080p movies onto the screen, masquerading as a 4K. Those should be all sent to the scrap pile for false (title) advertising. Some viewers might not care too much but I will notice. It's the artificial motion and smearing of pixels which take me out of the experience. I would not want to be that old couple with mismatched hardware trying to play their grandkids' (SD) DVDs on a 4K TV, smeared pixels, at 60fps fluid motion or whatever it's called for the brand. It makes old people suffer motion sickness and they have no clue how to navigate the menu to turn it off.
@WRNFILM
@WRNFILM 2 месяца назад
Upscaling is a big issue which is why I'm happy you can set if the X700 or UB820 will upscale DVDs / Blu Rays or send them out native. My issue is that the TV (if it is 4k) will upscale your media no matter what...and it's pretty rough. That's one of the reasons I'm so Impressed with the UB820. You won't confuse it for a 4k source at all, but it does an admirable job minimizing the upscaling artifacts.

Dolby vision turn on/off option is a great deal for projector users, most of the projectors dont support it , and in some projectors it adds a faint white tint, which spoils the whole color, so kudos to sony 🎉
@benpascall4297
@benpascall4297 Месяц назад
You can do the same on the Panasonic. When it's switched on in the menu, it only activates when a disc with DV is played and plays standard HDR10 if not. The Sony doesn't do this - you get forced DV on non DV discs throwing the picture out. On the Panasonic you can toggle to off for projectors and with the latest update you can opt got player lead (low latency) DV which will work on projectors or TV lead DV (full DV) - this is with the most recent firmware update. I have both the X700 and the UB820 but think that latter is far better.

Anyone looking at 4k players, the only thing I can suggest is to stay away from the Sony UBP X800. It has serious issues playing dual layer 4k discs. It freezes constantly, and you have unplug it to reset it every time. Sony fix was to come out with the X800M2 a year later and just forget about the X800.
