Hello guys, and welcome back to Car Obsession. Towards the end of last year, I took the plunge and decided to give the Carly OBD reader as I heard quite a buzz around it, plus good friend and fellow RU-vidr PocketRockets had recommended it to me. I use Carista which is cheaper; also Carista dont make you turn on the engine, just switch on the dash 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@CarObsession in the set up it connects to your phone step 1 then connects to the car step 2. It doesn't connect to car to then go to step 3.

Every Leon you scan will have the interior monotoring sensors fault! even though it still functions fine (thing with slots in by the interior light) The locks are very common and there is a fix video out there for the common fault of the outer door handles not working when the interior handle's still do

@@CarObsession You know for the alarm if you was to leave a dog in the car or something and didn't want it to set alarm off. A double press of the key lock button disables this sensor along with the door deadlocks, with one press doing the opposite. Alot of cars have a button in the car to disable the sensors but not these!

@@CarObsession hi there, I have a BMW 330e late 2016? A few days ago I got a msg on dashboard drivetrain malfunction msg drive moderately? I have a fault reader Amazon one but cost me only £24? Doesn't pick up the fault code or store anything? Will the Carly tell me the exact problem and part I need replacing, or will it give me a number of possible faults? My mechanic wants to charge £50 just to plug in his laptop? Any help much appreciated? Am willing to purchase one?

@@mymemories925 Hi there, thanks for watching, and thanks for the question. I am confident Carly would be able to find the fault code, although I would not like to guarantee it. It's also worth noting that a fault code doesn't always necessarily mean a part needs replacing. Great example for you; I work in a car repair garage and a customer wanted us to replace the high pressure fuel pump on their 3 Series as their did a code scan and found a fault for that particular component. Before we carried out the work, which was not a cheap fix by the way, we confirmed that the pump was fine and that instead there was no power going to the pump, which is why it isn't working. Had we carried on regardless we would have cost our customer a fair amount of money and the car would have been no better off compared to when it first came in. Mind you, that's not to say it's not worth trying to replace parts to cure an issue, but there needs to be enough rationale to do so, and it needs to be cost effective to be worth trying. For example, if your petrol car has a misfire code on cylinder 2, it could be worth swapping the ignition coil and/or the spark plug with another cylinder to see if the fault moves. If it does, there's a good chance you've got a dodgy coil - this happened to my SEAT Leon Cupra R earlier this year.

@@CarObsession thanks for the advice? Recently had a full service and all spark plugs replaced with Bosch ones? I'm assuming it won't be the spark plugs?

ARRON IS CORRECT THOUGH, NEVER CLEAR THE CODES, your mechanic will have nothing to go on other wise when trying to fix it so it won't get fixed!!!!!

Thankfully it doesn't happen that often at the garage I work at, but there has been the odd occasion where a customer has cleared the codes and they simply cannot fathom just how difficult that could make the diagnostic process.

You say that, my Honda Civic Type R went wrong 😉. Ok, it was only a window regulator, but it still needed fixing. Rather annoyingly, I couldn't find one on the aftermarket, so the only choice I had was to get one direct from Honda, which was around £200 if memory serves me right. Interestingly, I also had problems with the wing mirrors on the Civic as well.

@@CarObsession I used to work Longbridge as a technician in press cars and 75 air bag lights were always coming on. A technical bulletin said seat gases were a problem for the connectors under the seat..............drivers farting and causing poor connections for the airbag connectors under the seat lol. Unplug them and reconnect them 4 or 5 times, clear the codes and jobs a good one lol
